Reports are the Pats may upgrade the WRs through trade (not necessarily Hopkins)

Sounds like there is a group inside the Patriots organization that wants to get a stud WR. Looks like if they do, they will trade. According to Andrew Callahan, the names could be available via trade includes:

DeAndre Hopkins
Keenan Allen (he has a $15.5 million base and can save them just under $15 million in cap by trading him and they have to give Herbert a big extension)
Mike Evans
Tee Higgins
Jerry Jeudy
Robbie Anderson
Tyler Boyd
Corey Davis

If the Pats add a stud receiver it will either be via the draft or by trade. That guy just isn't available as a free agent.

I'd like to see them dangle a second to trade for a receiver and be willing to pay a top receiver a more expensive contract than the Pats are used to typically offering.

Just wrote in another thread that Keenan Allen is one of my favorites. Tee Higgins and Jerry Jeudy, youngsters are okay. Rest are long in the tooth.

Unless the NFL radically changes, I don't think you will ever see another stud WR hit free agency ever again. Either teams will pay through the nose and sign them or trade them away for a bounty of picks. Stud WRs are becoming as valuable to teams as stud QBs.

How can they be split on whether the offense needs an upgrade when they watched our receivers struggle to get open since 2018?

I'd rather pay a DeAndre Hopkins $30 million than Agholor and Jonnu smith that...but value!

The quote says there are "some within the organization". That could mean that some people in the organization have spoke to him saying they need an upgrade at receiver. It doesn't necessarily mean that the organization is split on it.

There could also be a situation where the receivers that have been listed on this thread just don't want to come to New England and the Pats get shut out of trading for the top receivers. I'm hoping for the guys OP mentioned but I think there is a chance the Pats don't get one. The quote covers their asses if the Pats don't get a top receiver they can say they "always liked what they had".

If the Pats can't get one of the guys listed I would really hope they draft Addison, or Johnston with their first round pick. I think Zay Flowers in the 2nd could end up being a number one. I'd like to see the team continually invest in the position via the draft to solve the problem long term.

What about Teakwood Thornton?
I assume he'll be the WR3 or WR 4 on the team next year. He is fast so maybe they can get him going as a downfield threat with a new OC. If they go into the season expecting him to be a WR2 I won't be happy.

Only on Patsfans could Robbie Anderson and Corey Davis be an upgrade at WR. What a pair of JAGS.

Mike Evans is signed through 2023 to big money and Tampa isnt going to trade him for nothing. Juedy is on the last year of his rookie contract coming off a near 1000 yard 6 TD season and Denver wants to get rid of him? HAHAHA

DeAndre Hopkins: has one year left in his contract. '23 cap is $30.75M. They save $8.1M with a trade so a possibility. He'll be 31 in '23. Maybe.

Keenan Allen: has one year left in his contract. '23 cap is $21.7M. They do save $16.3M with a trade so a possibility. He'll be 31 in '23. No go.

Mike Evans: Bucs would take a $21.4M dead cap hit by trading him. His cap is $23.7M. No go.

Tee Higgins: final year of his rookie contract w/ $3.96M cap. They save $3M by trading him. Not worth it for such a good play maker. Bengals have more cap space than the Pats. No go.

Jerry Jeudy: final year of his rookie contract w/ $4.8M cap. They save $2.7M by trading him. Not worth it for such a good play maker. They can always tag him next year. No go.

Robbie Anderson: nough said.

Tyler Boyd: final year of his contract w/ a $10M cap. They do save $8.9M with a trade so a possibility. Bengals have more cap space than the Pats. No go.

Corey Davis: final year of his contract w/ a $11.2M cap. They do save $10.5M with a trade so a possibility. He's 27 so probably looking for one last big contract. Maybe.

Agree on Anderson’s hairdo…

BTW, seen other reports saying Hops would be about 19M on the cap cuz the Cards would eat his prorated signing bonus.

And the Bengals may have more cap room, but they have to pay Burrow sooner rather than later…

Keenan Allen - Justin Herbert is about to get $40 million a year all guaranteed. The Chargers can use the cap space and the dollars since they are a relatively cheap team.

The Bucs can trade Evans after a June 1 and get a huge cap savings by doing so.

Tee Higgins is in the last year of his deal and they probably cannot resign him and give Chase and Burrow the deals they will demand in the next year or two. Both the latter will get record setting deals and Higgins will command #1 money. This would be like AJ Brown and other WRs who were traded in the last year of their rookie deals. Next year someone is going to pay him #1 WR money. Are the Be gals willing to franchise Higgins and give Burrow and Chase top of the market deals?

Same with Tyler Boyd.

The Russell Wilson deal may force the Broncos to trade Jeudy.

And Chase. I mean Burrow is going to get at least $40 million a year fully or mostly guaranteed. And Chase is going to command probably $25 million or more a year mostly guaranteed. Burrow is likely to get his deal this off-season. Chase probably next offseason.

And last time I checked, the Bengals have the cheapest owner in the NFL. No way is he going to pay Burrow, Chase, Higgins, and Boyd.

Allen is 31 this season. No go.

Bucs are not doing that to Evans. Sorry. Plus a post June 1st trade means they can't use the cap relief during FA.

Bengals are in Win mode. Why would they break up a winning formula now when they're under cheap contracts. Makes zero sense.

Why would they bring a feanchise QB and then get rid of his weapons, which happens to be great value? Makes zero sense.

This is a pipe dream. Maybe Corey Davis, but are the Jets really willing to trade w/ NE?

Just to clarify: if they trade him before 6/1, they take a $21M dead money hit. If they wait until 6/1, only $9M hits this year, while the remaining $12M hits the cap in 2024. [And note that unlike releases, teams can't process a pre-6/1 trade as a post-6/1 trade.]

Only one on that list that I’m interested in giving up nice picks for would be Higgins. The rest are either too old, or too old with too much money for me to get stoked giving up a 1st or 2nd for. Think Jeudy can be a premier number 1 that is worth a 1st and a big contract? Hmm…maybe. Just not completely sold.

The Bengals can get a high draft pick for Higgins this year. If they don’t trade him this year, odds are he is gone next year and they will get a 2025 third round comp pick.

The Broncos didn’t bring in a franchise QB. They brought in a washed up QB and paid him like an elite franchise QB. Now they have to rebuild with his albatross of a contract and without four first two day picks to do so.

Allen is two months older than Hopkins. Why is Hopkins a maybe and Allen a no go? Both are still 30 and will turn 31 during the offseason.

There are no WR's worth trading for that a team would realistically want to trade.

Regarding Tee Higgins, this is a type of move Burrow puts his foot down and says "Higgins is off limits".
