Shouldn't really surprise anyone... Perhaps we need to not pick on Crable and pick on Wheatley instead.

Re: Report: Wheatley to be realeased

Patriots released CB Terrence Wheatley.
Wheatley gets let go to make room for Logan Mankins. The former second-round pick can officially assume the label of "draft bust."

Twitter / shalise manza young: League source says the #Pa ...

The Patriots are expected to activate LG Logan Mankins for Sunday's Week 9 game against Cleveland.
They won't waste any time getting their stud left guard back into the fold. CB Terrence Wheatley has already been released to open up a roster spot for Mankins. The early season holdout will be activated at some point before tomorrow's game. His return upgrades the entire offensive until.

Re: Report: Wheatley to be realeased

So, there will be no nailing Mankins' ass to the bench I guess.....

There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth around here.

First sign of trouble out of the offensive line and there will be hell to pay from these fans. "How dare they bench Connoly!" You might as well just start a thread/pole right now. "Mankins or Connoly? Who's better?"

Re: Report: Wheatley to be released

If true, then I'll be the first to admit I was wrong; I thought there was close to zero chance that Mankins would be activated for the game against the Browns. He must have done very well in practice this week; Belichick talks about the difference between being in shape versus being in football shape, getting your timing down, etc.

The other thing I am thinking about is that perhaps BB wants Mankins to get some live reps in before the Steelers game. As for Wheatley, it's really too bad; it sounded like he had a very good training camp but BB must have figured he can't do much good for the team if he's constantly sidelined with an injury.

I thought we had a 3 year, you can stay on the team injured policy around here?

Re: Report: Wheatley to be released

Too bad it didn't work out, I was really excited about him after seeing some of his college play and hearing him sound like he had his head on straight in interviews. I guess he just couldn't stay on the field, and the fact that they have another young, small but athletic CB in Butler creates some overlap.

I hope he gets picked up by someone and plays well when he's not playing against us.

Re: Report: Wheatley to be released

Didn't the Pats get a 2-game roster exemption for Mankins?

If so, I have to interpret opening a roster spot as a sign that he looks really good in practice.

How many snaps will he play against the Browns?

I guess it's three week one rosters and not three full years?

Then again with McKenzie being released as well, I guess that three year rule is history.

Not that it will happen - though I wouldn't mind if it did - but if I'm not mistaken Wheatley has missed enough time that he is still eligible for the Practice Squad.

we need mankins to be in game form by next week when we play the steelers and the following week against the colts. the left side of the line needs to be strenghtened.

In another thread, I had mentioned the way they brought Neal back in 2008, after his stay on the PUP. They gave him limited snaps in his first action back, and let him work his way into the starting lineup over a period of about 3 weeks. I won't be surprised if we see something like that with Mankins, or even if they just use the Cleveland game as his only warmup. The second game being on the road against Pittsburgh may have them speeding up the timetable a bit.

Of course, this is still just speculation until we see the guy on the field.

Thats what I was thinking also, if he played too much right out of the gate he'd be sore as hell, this way he can get used to banging heads slowly.

Makes sense to get him out there for some downs and get back into hitting mode. I thought Connoly did great, but I love this development. SOLID depth at OL we can feel GOOD about. I'd expect to see Connoly in at FB or maybe even TE in the red zone.

I'm disappointed to hear about Wheatley's release, but this can only be a great sign for Mankins. He must have been keeping himself in excellent shape for BB to spend a roster spot on him so quickly. I thought for sure BB would sit on Mankins for a few weeks and let him work his way back, but maybe Logan works even harder than we've all heard.

Our cornerback depth looks like this now:

McCourty, Arrington, Butler, Wilhite, plus Tony Carter on the PS, who has NFL experience. Not bad depth, even without Wheatley.

My exact thought! I didn't expect him back this quickly! Must have been doing alot of work while not with the team!

Good news on Mankins.

Disappointing on Wheatley's part though. Was really hoping he could help us out. Maybe it's a good sign for BB's confidence in Butler though

very upset about Wheatley - I keep having visions in my head of some athletic - quick burst type plays prior to injuring himself (the first time)

oh well - so be it
