Umenyiora and his agent were blindsided by them pulling the plug and earlier reports stated that the Giants wanted this to be resolved by the end of the week. They pulled the plug because there were six teams ready to make a trade and it was becoming a distraction.Says who?

The Giants cannot PUP him. He didn't start the season on the active PUP roster. They can either suspend him or put him on IR.

I believe they can PUP him as long as he doesn't practice with the team. After doing a little digging it's not even clear he passed a physical. He had one on Saturday after reporting a day late and was due to see a specialist on Sunday and is claiming an old injury is nagging. And the league year doesn't start until later today so who knows what they can and can't do in the interim under a new CBA.

Again, I don't really think he will end up with the Pats, but ultimately the Giants look to be heading to a point of no return where they will have to trade him to someone.

They may or they may not be. He'd have been better off staying home a while longer, but he paniced over the $30K fines that don't actually kick in until today. And he lost leverage because of the new reporting rules for credited service. The Giants may just stand their ground for the greater good, it's a Mara thing...

It is clear they did not express a time table of the trade talks to end:

The source said he was fuming Wednesday morning when the Giants told his agent, Tony Agnone, that he no longer had permission to seek a trade for his client after just two unsuccessful days of trying to find a team willing to meet the Giants' asking price of a first-round pick.

Why would they have to tell him he no longer had permission to seek a trade and why would he be fuming if the Giants told him up front he only had 24 hours to seek a trade? It is quite clear that there was never an agreed on window to end yesterday.

It is also quite clear that the Giants regret giving the opportunity whatever the reason is because they pulled the plug on the trade talk after 24 hours even before a team could get desperate and bump off their offer which was a definitive possibilty if trade talks lasted longer.

As for their options, there are a lot of questions of what they can do and whether the window of the PUP is still available to them. One thing for sure is you cannot fine a player $30k a day for not reporting to camp when he is at camp.

Osi's agent was granted permission on Monday, although it wasn't reported until Tuesday by ESPN. They likely gave him 48 hours. Or maybe 36. Could be any time frame that suited them in this condensed format, and doesn't even have to have been one since they did not find a suitor prior to permission being withdrawn. It has been widely reported that there were no takers for him at his price plus a first although upwards of 20 teams did their due diligence. Maybe that was what he was really upset about.

My best guess is this is the Giants way of regaining control of the trade negotiations. Perhaps, Umenyiora was closing in financially with a team that wasn't offering the best trade return to them. It's hard to see how this ends any other way than him being traded. But, I doubt it's to the Patriots though.

Just a thought: but would the Patriots consider offering Wes Welker along with a conditional pick to acquire Umenyiora? It would help make it feasible from a salary cap perspective, and Welker is entering the last year of his contract, may have a diminishing role because the heavy use of mulltiple TE formations, and he did manage to tick Belichick off last year before the Jets playoff game. I think the Giants need WRs as well, and Welker would definently help Eli Manning get back on track. Just a thought

The league wanted it stricter rules for holdouts in the new CBA and I don't blame them. I don't see why it's stupid.?

I understand the league wants it and in most cases will get it but bottom line is if a guy really doesnt want to play for you he isnt going to.

Carson has said he retiring, which means he isn't cashing a paycheck, hence there is nothing to fine him about. Osi can retire and not get any of his 4 million this year too if he wants to. Would be a pretty dumb move but he could do it.

hold outs worked the same way cant imagine players get paid during holdouts and when the holdout ends the team still owned the rights.


Carson Palmer reportedly would play for other teams but has retired from the Bengals it really is no different than a holdout with the exception that in holdout instances people pursume it would end even without a trade intime to gain accrewed seasons toward benefits but nothing says a holdout couldnt go longer.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this but now that Prince Amukamara has a broken foot and will be out for a couple of months I see an opportunity to ship Wilhite out of town since its doubtful he makes the team.

Wilhite + 2nd rounder for Osi might interest the Giants.

Well, they didn't learn any way you look at it. Because they should have known that you cannot go back after you do that. It seems pretty clear that they pulled the plug because with so many suitors, they might get the first round pick that they were looking for and they don't want to trade him. Like with Branch situation, they thought Umenyiora would find out the market for him wasn't as strong as he thought it was. And like in the Branch situation, it was the team who misjudged the market for the player.

As for the new CBA, I still think there is still arbitration it is just out of Doty's hands. Doty was never involved in the Branch situation. John Feerick, a law professor at Fordham, was the arbitrator in the Branch case. According to the new CBA, the arbitrator will be chosen jointly by the league and NFLPA.

As for holdouts, Umenyiora is "injured". He is showing up to practices, but sitting out for an "undisclosed injury". He is daring the Giants to fine or suspend him.

There is no doubt it is going to end ugly between the Giants and Umenyiora. And the Giants have a lot to do with it. I don't know if he has a realistic shot or not of coming to the Patriots, but at this point, I think he has a better shot of being on the Patriots before the start of the season than the Giants because I think the Giants are going to have to cut bait because they created a nightmare for themselves.

They put a time limit on the permission when they gave it,.

Pay Osi less than Wilfork or no deal. If no deal then trade Meriweather somewhere and keep Goldson.

Actually, it was widely speculated the Giants would lower their asking price for Osi to a second rounder. So a 2nd + Wilhite isn't nearly as ludicrous a proposition as the hypothetical Red Sox trade scenario you posted.

I figured this didn't deserve a new thread, but PFT is reporting that there are rumors that Umenyiora will be traded very soon. I doubt it will be the Pats if it happens (I don't see him ever playing for the Giants ever again), but he will likely be traded before the season starts.
