Total head scratcher to me. An aging DB who is past his peak athleticism/ability.
I have to think this was prior to drafting Gonzalez, with them hoping 1-2 years of Gilmore could be a serviceable CB1 stopgap allowing them to compete for the next couple seasons, and then use their high draft capital on a position other than CB. Basically, if we can address this need via trade/free-agency, we can focus our draft picks elsewhere.
Makes sense, I guess, but I don't like the idea of having brought Gilmore back for several reasons. Love me some Gilmore but I thought his attitude was poor here during his final season, maybe half-season.
Not sure if anyone recalls, but he made remarks about his quad rehab process after leaving the Pats. I could be getting some of the details wrong, but the gist of it was: the Pats required him to run ten 100-yard sprints after he had been cleared to return to practice, which Gilmore suggested was an undue/unfair burden placed on him. That comment really, really soured me on the guy ... like, a lot; that seems perfectly reasonable for an NFL defensive back returning to physical activity during the rehab/conditioning process. Screams soft, to be candid, and does not strike me as what this team needs in terms of age or attitude.
If re-acquiring Gilmore would've meant no Gonzalez (which is pure speculation on my part), I am very pleased they ended up not bringing Gilmore back. I really doubt the team thought Gonzalez would last past the top-5, or top-10, and fully anticipated they would not have a realistic shot at drafting him. Pretty miraculous they got him at 17.
Odd stuff. Curious to hear others thoughts on this.
