Total head scratcher to me. An aging DB who is past his peak athleticism/ability.

I have to think this was prior to drafting Gonzalez, with them hoping 1-2 years of Gilmore could be a serviceable CB1 stopgap allowing them to compete for the next couple seasons, and then use their high draft capital on a position other than CB. Basically, if we can address this need via trade/free-agency, we can focus our draft picks elsewhere.

Makes sense, I guess, but I don't like the idea of having brought Gilmore back for several reasons. Love me some Gilmore but I thought his attitude was poor here during his final season, maybe half-season.

Not sure if anyone recalls, but he made remarks about his quad rehab process after leaving the Pats. I could be getting some of the details wrong, but the gist of it was: the Pats required him to run ten 100-yard sprints after he had been cleared to return to practice, which Gilmore suggested was an undue/unfair burden placed on him. That comment really, really soured me on the guy ... like, a lot; that seems perfectly reasonable for an NFL defensive back returning to physical activity during the rehab/conditioning process. Screams soft, to be candid, and does not strike me as what this team needs in terms of age or attitude.

If re-acquiring Gilmore would've meant no Gonzalez (which is pure speculation on my part), I am very pleased they ended up not bringing Gilmore back. I really doubt the team thought Gonzalez would last past the top-5, or top-10, and fully anticipated they would not have a realistic shot at drafting him. Pretty miraculous they got him at 17.

Odd stuff. Curious to hear others thoughts on this.

He has lost a step, but I wouldn't have hated the signing at the time.

However, I agree that I hate the thought of it in hindsight if it meant no Gonzalez.

To elaborate on the bit in my original post re: Gilmore *****ing about how the Pats handled his recovery/rehab process following his quad injury, here is the post I made back in December 2021 when Gilmore first spoke out.

Only thing about that is, it lacks context. Was it his first day back after being cleared for full activity, or had he been work at full capacity for a week or two? If the former I can see his point, even if fully cleared ramping things up instead of going full bore right away just makes sense.

Staying away from rehashing old stuff, I would've had no problem resigning Gilly if it had no bearing on anything else. Would've been a great pro for Gonzalez to learn from and provided solid/smart depth. Bill seems to be striking out on guys they’re rumored to be interested in quite a bit the last few seasons. We’ve gotta get this team back on track asap so that these guys are interested in signing with the club again for those rings.

Amazing how many times patriots are "beat out" for a player they supposedly really wanted.
Gilmore would have been a great add and may have freed them up to take on OL or the Ohio State WR (who is killing it in Seahawks training camp). I think Bill is way to passive on these player acquisition attempts.

As the quote reads, "like, right before I got traded"

It was right after that trade to Carolina that Gilmore returned to the field and began playing in full-speed, live action games. So this running Gilmore bemoans was occurring within close proximity to him being traded to Carolina and returning to the field.

I seriously, Seriously doubt Gilmore would've re-signed here.

Hes not alone in complaining. I read a piece by jake baily after he signed with miami. He wrote that last year he was told to hit the wgt room and do legs, specifically squats. He said that he had never done squats before and hurt his lower back early on. But he was told to continue doing them. The back got worse and thats when the friction began baily and bb, eventually baily refused to do them, and thats when he was suspended. It seems plausible to me that could have been what happened after reading gilmores account.

Seems like only one side of the story to me.

The conditioning program is not a fundamental problem for the team. The reality is that injury disputes are not unique to the Patriots. Most of the complaints, including Gilmore's, have a contract component. Historically, many concerns were related to Alex G giving advice that conflicted with the training staff. While not as interesting, there have been more players that complimented the program. The number of players who have legitimate issues is very small.

This has been the most frustrating part of the post Brady era to me, the lack of direction in the "rebuild". Signing these aging veterans who are progress stoppers for the young guys. I assume they looked into Gilmore before they drafted Gonzalez but even then we had Jack Jones and Marcus Jones on the roster with a cornerback spot already taken by Jon Jones. Why bring in a 33 year old corner and pay him $10 million? We just seem to keep straddling the line between rebuilding and trying to win now and it is leaving us in NFL purgatory as a team around .500 every year.

I could see it if the plan was to redo his contract and get him to switch to FS. Not sure if he'd be willing to do that.

I don't understand the angst.

Pats always signed vets just in case the rookies falter.

Gonzo may be great but hes a rookie

Jack Jones is a headcase and might not be with the team

Jon Jones is 30

Myles Bryant sucks

Marcus Jones is OK

Green Goblin is fragile

Gilly knows the system.

Well GM/BB could have Traded Gilmore at the height of his career and botched that whole situation. We should have a got a heck of a lot more than we got back I agree with Coach cap "Seriously doubt Gilmore would've re-signed here."

This wasn't some veteran minimum guy he would have been on the roster had he been signed.

The Cowboys are only paying Gilmore about 8M.

That is probably *why* the Patriots would have been interested.... Gimore is worth 8M a year.

And he would be a good mentor for our young CBs too. Knows the system as well.

IMO, all the grievances ex-players have with the Patriots don't mean anything. It was just dollars man....except for Asante Samuel of course, LOL.

He is just shy of a $10 million cap hit and signed for $9.5 million guaranteed. I would much rather see what we get out of the younger guys.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. We are betting a lot on a rookie. Gonzalez could be amazing, but this could also be the weakest year of his career just based on how much he needs to develop.
