Look guys, you can dislike it all you want. Unless the Patriots website is wrong, Steve is going to go into the 2019 season as the only defensive coach with direct experience with Bill Belichick's system, especially if the rest of these positions are filled by promotions from within.

Since there's been no direct evidence of the Patriots actually searching for a DC since the Schiano debacle, I think you can write it in pen, this is happening.

There's two real possibilities here. The head coach absolutely cannot work as a full time DC and do the rest of his job as well, Bill knows that, not even a young man could do it and he's not young anymore. Bill is either going to hire a DC or go into the season with his son in a Brian Flores type role, working an expanded role and taking on the responsibilities of a DC while his father holds back the official title until he earns it. Honestly I think it's going to be the second of the two possibilities.

Either way, there is zero chance Steve Belichick doesn't play a large role in the defensive coaching team next year, it has to work that way, everyone else is going to be a new face at this point.

OK I know who this guy is.

He went to Phillips Academy four years before I went to Nobles.

He was an assistant coach on the Lions when they beat us in a fluke game at the new SilverDome in '76, and again the next season when the Dolts allowed them to block a punt and score the winning TD to eliminate the Patriots prior to the last game of the season.

There's some good UDFA's this season. I'm glad they went with a punter in the 5th.

Except the fact that Jerod Mayo has actually played many years in the system so likely will be a loud voice too.

I just don’t believe Belichick will hand the duties to his son ready or not. If anything he will have to go beyond what got Patricia and Flores the position. Think about the work Belichick put in to get every position he has held, and then think about where guys like Pioli, Dimitroff, Caserio and others put in to work through their system? Belichick is the last person who would engage in nepotism, and I have no doubt that when Stephen Belichick has earned it and is ready he will get the nod. I hope he ascends to the job in the next few years because I believe he’s going to be a good coach, but he’s going to have to earn every step of it.

For a long time I thought there was a chance I play in Lacrosse in college, but it turns out he wasn't a Freshman until the year AFTER I graduated. It would have been a great story to tell....IF it actually had happened. ;)

The best thing for him would be to take his next promotion with another team. He'd get an irreplaceable experience of NFL coaching in a different administration, under different personalities. And he'd earn some street cred that'll be much harder to earn as the son-of-the-GOAT. He can then come back, after 2-4 years, to larger responsibilities in NE with a much stronger resume.

Why not just let Bielema be the defensive caller?

Gotta wonder if trying to do too much will do more harm than good and speed up an eventual retirement. He may want to subscribe to the TB12 method.

Wow. That would be a lot on this kid. He would have to be the one that follows the GOAT coach, all while having to follow in Dad’s footsteps. Not saying it can’t be done. Only that it would be a mountain of a task

Makes sense, but I think what they are doing is constructing their future pieces for the organization post Belichick/Brady. Caserio will be the one in charge, but McDaniel’s and Stephen Belichick will give them more continuity.

If BB is DC play caller I hope he brings the pressure like Flores did and doesn't revert to bend but don't break.

That's actually what I was thinking when I first heard about it. The personnel is much different than the last time he assumed the role. The argument back then was he didn't have the players to run the more complex and aggressive stuff. He has those kinds of players this time around, so I'm thinking things will be different.

I was hoping - best case scenario - that would be a year or two down the road. I didn't expect to see him doing it at the first OTA. (I realize this doesn't mean he'll be doing it when the bullets start flying for real)

Rookie coach, but veteran linebacker: Jerod Mayo calls...

With the way front offices are hiring guys way too early, Mayo should be running a team within 5 years.

    3 wouldnt shock me.
Mcdaniels and Mayo running this team in the future would be a good successionplan.
    Always loved Mayo.
