Evidently he asked for it to pursue other opportunities.

Reiss on Twitter

Patriots have released LB Tyrone McKenzie off practice squad. My understanding is that McKenzie asked for it, to pursue other opportunities.

Real shame. I truly hope whatever he does and wherever he goes in life leads to the richest rewards possible.

Re: Reiss: McKenzie released (for real).

Best wishes & good luck going forward!

Re: Reiss: McKenzie released (for real).

They were already paying him $188k, a lot above the usual rate for practice squadders. I'd bet he'll be signed somewhere shortly.

Edit: Second highest-paid p-squadder in the league.

Too bad. McKenzie and Wheatley both seemed like nice prospects. Maybe we'll add an RB now.

Did we cut Wheatley too?
Ok I just saw that we cut wheatley to make room for Mankins.
That makes sense.
It's still possible that we resign Wheatley to the practice squad.
Of course if we can find a better PS candidate that would be even better.
I think I've had enough of Wheatley's fragile wrists.

Now it makes perfect sense for Wheatley to be signed to the PS.

Re: Reiss: McKenzie released (for real).

Good luck to him, seems his knee injury really set him back him!

Re: Reiss: McKenzie released (for real).

Him asking to be released doesn't make a lot of sense unless he thinks some other team is more likely to elevate him from PS to roster after seeing him for a while.

Any team that thought he was worth a 53 man roster spot could sign him off the PS w/o the release.

This does allow him to sign to someone elses PS. But why?

Re: Reiss: McKenzie released (for real).

Makes no sense, any team wanting him on their 53 could have grabbed him at any time - why ask for your release?

Must be he is leaving the game totally?? Where else would he be able to rake in 188/m??

Interesting... I guess maybe at that salary, interest in signing him as a starter was slightly diminished?

i.e. he could make another team's 53 man squad but not at that salary?

Regardless, seems good of Belichick to respond to his request for a better opportunity.

That's part of the reason why guys want to play here - its a good organization and they won't stand in the way of a young player who might have a better opportunity somewhere else.

Re: Reiss: McKenzie released (for real).

Good luck in whatever you do Tyrone. Wish we could have seen you actually play in a regular season game. Don't know what we are missing.

Re: Reiss: McKenzie released (for real).

SMY and Reiss saying on twitter he's going to be w/ another team -- still playing football.

Reiss

"Now that I'm thinking about it, one bonus of Tyrone McKenzie asking for his release is he can now work out for other teams. Couldn't before"

But he could now be signed to another teams PS where he thinks he has a better chance of eventuakky making the 53.

No, it is still well below the min salary for being on a 53 man squad, he would still be getting a pay raise. Just not as large.

Re: Reiss: McKenzie released (for real).

too bad, i think the kid had potential

Re: Reiss: McKenzie released (for real).

Wish him all the best. He's a high-character kid, had some potential but with Fletcher and Spikes both jumping up the depth chart, he didn't have a chance here. Maybe if he hadn't gotten injured last year, the story would have went differently. But I hope he finds a good spot for himself.

Re: Reiss: McKenzie released (for real).

I wish him well.

(Unless of course, the Pats are playing the team he end up on or if he ends up on an AFCE team in which case I hope he sucks and plays horribly)

Re: Reiss: McKenzie released (for real).

It stinks to lose TM because he never really got a chance and started out behind the 8 ball with that injury in rookie camp... but its a good problem because it means we have great depth at ILB if we can afford to let McKenzie go... I wish him luck with his new team.

Re: Reiss: McKenzie released (for real).

Yes, these are the GOOD kind of problems. New England, these past years, seems to have an embarrassment of riches, as it were..... :rocker:
