Rap: Mayo is the new HC

I’m willing to give him a chance. It’s not a splashy hire. At the end of the day the league is trending towards younger head coaches. It worked for the Texans with demeco Ryan’s and it worked for the rams with Sean mcvay. That’s what they’re going for here. We need a GM who can build a talented roster and get back to winning again.

So are all the dweebs who got their panties in a bunch going to apologize for whining about Curran's reporting? He basically told us what was going to happen about 2 weeks ago.
He guesses, he was right in general on this but if he was really dialed in he would have known that Mayo had a succession clause and the plan made in 2022 was for it to take place after the 2024 season

You have no way of denying it. It makes zero sense otherwise to hire such an inexperienced, zero accomplishment coach whose sole knowledge and experience comes from the very guy you just fired. Defense would supposedly be Mayo's strength and that wasn't even a problem with Belichick.
Of course I have a way of denying it, since there’s literally ZERO evidence of this being a purely Diversity hire unless your just saying this because Mayo happens to be black.

Now there is evidence that this has been in the works for a while since Kraft changed the wording in Mayo’s contract extension basically saying that he’s the next HC waiting and giving him the title as Assistant HC.

You can believe whatever you want, that’s your right, but I think it’s shortsighted and small minded just to make this an issue based solely on black and white.

Now I’m not naive enough to deny that race didn’t have any consideration; but I’m inclined to think that there were many more prominent reasons, some of which are internal and we may never be privy to, as to why Jerod Mayo was hand picked by the Krafts as the heir apparent. Not everything is about skin color.

I have no clue if Elliot would be bad, though.

How much of the “bad” decisions in recent drafts were more Bill’s call? Would Elliot running the show be the exact same results?

He’s not from Bill’s tree, so I don’t think hiring him would mean “business as usual”.
It would be fascinating to know what really has gone on over the years during draft meetings, and in the war room. How much disagreement occurred, and what players would’ve been drafted by the Pats, if Bill hadn’t overruled his scouts and player personnel assistants. We’ve heard/read rumors, but nobody knows for sure. In addition to fascinating, it could also be depressing from a “what if…” standpoint.

Of course he knew

If he says it publicly then Bill belichick and Kraft know it came from mayo. That would not be good for Mayo.

the Belichick kids are going to be interesting. From what I’ve heard, Mayo and Belichick are good friends. Not sure if blood is thicker than water here but Steve has a chance to do make a name for himself if he stays rather than follow his father. I’d be blown away if Mayo offers the youngster the dc job.

It certainly will be interesting. Steve reportedly is good at strategy/in-game tactics (play calling) but isn't adept at conducting meetings, expressing himself and handling players, which explains why he and Mayo split DC duties. Whether he can deliver in a full-blown DC job is an open question.

"Not everything is about skin color"... except for all the times it is, along with all the millions of dollars Kraft pours into racial/ethnically motivated initiatives (not just skin color... race). You're just choosing to selectively apply it and block it out when it's inconvenient.

the approach works on every level in situations in and out of sport......groups of people working together, to see the most success, need to be committed to the common goal, need to put their ego and personal desires aside to all pull in the same direction......sounds cliche, but its common to every succesful group endeavor, other than the rare situation where a bunch of assholes pull of some random feet

you see it with every great sports franchise......what BB did wasn't out of the ordinary, he just 1000% committed to it to the point of using some of the same assessments navy seals use to weed out candidates......to the point of missing changes in positional importance and evolving skillsets within positions, to the point of thinking, seemingly, that all that mattered was the right KIND of player.....he is also 72, and relating to players was sometimes hard i'd think

doesn't change the fact that the basic culture he cultivated was the right one......even a majority of players on this current squad say they'd rather play here than elsewhere, that they loved playing for Bill.....having played here his entire career, and coached here, I have zero doubt that Mayo will keep that consistent & persistent culture intact
I don’t understand how this response relates to mine.

I wasn’t talking about being committed I was talking about someone trying to replace a top person by duplicating them, because they never will.

I gave little doubt he believes in the same things BB believes in but the comment I was responding to was something yo the efffect of be belichick but with a kinder gentler demeanor.

We can always bring back Steve as the next HC after he wins another SB as his dads DC in Dallas.

Like or don't like Curran, but everyone else covering this was waffling on if Belichick would stay until the last minute and he didn't. Everyone was waffling on if Vrabel and Harbaugh and all the other moves changed the Pat's plans for HC or not and Curran didn't. Now Curran is calling his shot at GM and if he's right on that he's the one guy who has just reported on this thing accurately.

Like I find the guy grating at times for sure, but he's clearly been the most accurate reporter on the Belichick succession, and reporting is, you know, his job, not giving everyone good vibes or whatever.

No. It was because he had it written into his contract that he would be Belichick's successor and the league approved his contract. Under the revised Rooney rule, you cannot hire a minority candidate in house unless you interview at least one other minority candidate from outside the organization.
Yes, but in 2020 the League got much more strict with regards to the Rooney Rule. I do not believe the NFL would have approved that contractual clause in the post-2020 world had Mayo been white. But since it guaranteed a black HC hiring, the League was plenty happy to approve it.

That is my opinion and there's no way to know if it is correct but I stand by it.

I am happy with Mayo:

1) Former Pats player who played football at a high level. He will have the players' respect
2) He played IB which is the QB of the defense so he had a good grasp on the entire game as a player
3) Every single person I heard talk about him raves about him
4) He always came off as very knowledgeable, a people leader and intelligent in his interviews. He seems like someone with a vision an a plan to me.
5) Kraft has made good coaching hires everytime. Even Carrol turned out to be a HF level coach.

I dont want him to have GM control though. I want us to have a more traditional structure. Too much power in one person and not enough time to do them both effectively

Congrats to Mayo! Happy this was resolved quickly. Hopefully he can build his staff now and make a plan for the draft and free agency

He said this from last year.

He said this from last year.
Not many beat guys are more tied in than Curran. He had lots of Brady sources in the Brady camp and it looks like he like has sources in the Mayo camp (or maybe even someone close to the Kraft's). The only one who may be more tied in than Curran is Reiss but Reiss isn't really a news breaker type. He seems to float things he knows/heard as opinion or splice them into his notes column every week.

Looking forward to seeing what happens, this is fun

Also, interested to see where Belichick lands, gives him a good shot at the record, and will give me another team to root for

Really the only thing that would put me in a sour mood is Mayo saying anything along the lines of "we'll give Mac Jones a chance to compete in training camp"
