Question about BB's press conferences...

I am actually suprised nobody has invented a BB press conference drinking game.

We could probably come up with a minimum of ten BB standard comments.

Sarcasm to a stupid question would also qualify.

Sounds like fun.

Hey Pats fans, I have a question...

Here in Dallas, one of our biggest concerns when we hear Wade Phillips in his PCs is that when we're on a roll, he'll blurt out comments over how he's satisfied to be in the playoffs, and act like how proud he is of himself and his team, etc. I mean sometimes you get the feeling that this man is either overtly relaxed, or gets too overconfident. Do you also remember if Wade was like this in Buffalo?

Just curious - when the Pats are on a roll, what is BB's demeanor like during his PCs? Does he say much? Does he show his focus et al?

Just wondering, that's all.

Well, you know TunaFan, we try to be competitive in all three phases of the press conference, and there were some things we did right in this presser and you know, some things maybe we'd like to have back. Any time you're in that, you're up at that podium, those things will happen, you do some good things and some things you have to work on, you have to learn from them, and you move on. Right now I'm focused on the next press conference...

Pretty much like that

Sorry they got rid of my "Best New Years from Bill Belichick" thread... I guess it wasn't clear enough that it was satirical

BB is never too high, never too low. He'll use the same stock responses. After a win, it's "good to get a win against a good team, but we have to face another one next week." After a loss, it's "we got outplayed and out-coached; they made the plays and we didn't; we'll need to play better next week."
....After losses, he's usually very succinct and let's his body language speak for him. The worst I think I've ever seen him was after the Giants loss in the Super Bowl, understandably. He could barely get out a word to Chris Myers with his lip trembling. This game means everything to Bill and that loss was absolutely devastating to him.

Yeah I got the same impression after the Giants.

Another tendency: Very very often, even if an upcoming opponent is only vaguely and remotely a threat, he will talk about that team's stars as if they are the most deadly talent in the NFL, and characterize the upcoming game as the toughest challenge up to this point all year (or will say that about the team the Pats just played, unless he has lost to them.)

For a guy so roundly hated by other teams, he would MUCH rather compliment an opponent than his own guys.

+1, that he never reveals inside information. NEVER. And he keeps the entire team buttoned down on that score. Silence.

That comes from being from Annapolis (Dad coached @ Naval Academy) and around too much government via the Navy, if you ask me. He truly gets that information is a resource, a commodity. You don't give it away for no purpose, you don't give it away for free, and you understand that you generate intelligence any time you use the intelligence you have hoarded. I truly believe this is very much on display in his approach to the game.

Those who make much of the camera story, in fact, may see this as a classic "tragic flaw," that thing taken to excess that leads to ahem, a sub-optimal outcome.

Okay okay I'm in...

Counts for a sip:
"You know," as a filler

Counts for a shot:
- "Any time you..."
- "We made some plays out there" or "They made some plays out there", including the "...good plays..." or "...bad plays..." variants
- Understated evaluation of own player: "Tommy played pretty good" for a 5-TD day for Brady for example.
- Effusive praise for other team's player or upcoming player, or upcoming opponent or that day's opponent in general: "The Lions, you know, you have to try to do a lot of things all at one time and I just hope we can compete. Calvin Johnson, I just can't, I can't say enough, he's a tremendous talent, and... well Calvin Johnson, he's probably the best receiver playing the game right now, so right there we have our hands full..."

Counts for shot (or chugalug), refill, drink again:

- It is what it is

- we're just thinking about the next game
- we just need to do a better job at (fill in the blank)
- they're a really good team
- they have a good offense, good defense, well coached
- they do a real good job with (fill in the blank)
- they're really good at (fill in the blank)
- we'll worry about next week next week
- I don't know, I'll have to look at the film

"...when the injury report comes out."
"You'll have to ask (whoever) about that, I'm just trying to coach this team."
"Both teams have to go out there and play (in the same conditions/on the same surface/with the same rules)."
"You know, I didn't get a good look at that play, but we'll review the film like we do every week."
"That's a good question." (When it wasn't)

I have to say that I was never more proud of coach than when he was being bombarded with the rude questioning the week the whole spygate thing came out.
Man, anyone else and I mean ANYONE would have broke under that pressure but not ol' BB. Nope. Any question regarding that witch hunt and coach would just keep repeating..."I've already said what I want to say about that and there's nothing more to add.....anyone want to talk about San Diego...pretty good team in California...?"
One cool cucumber, he.

I think you folks in Dallas should be more concerned about whether Tony Romo can win a playoff game..... Last time I checked Wade Phillips was more of a puppet than a puppeteer. That's if puppeteer is a word, if not I'll go with puppet master.

I don't know anything about blubbering or going on a roll. All I know is that we are playing the Houston Texans on Sunday.

BB is never too high, never too low.

It's interesting, the 'old school' way of coaching - at least what we the public see - was full of just the reverse: Vince Lombardi, Bobby Knight, etc. Coaches as diverse as BB, Gibbs and Dungy have all succeeded with the never too high, never too low approach even if the rest of their coaching methods were different. Makes me wonder if a guy like Cowher would succeed if he decides to get back into coaching, regardless of how well he did in the past, or if somebody like Singletary will ever get his team to the playoffs and beyond.

BB after a 14 point loss.

"Well, that was a tough loss yesterday. Gotta hand it to the [other team]. They came ready to play and gave us more than we could handle. I wasn't happy with a lot of what I saw and it's pretty clear there was room for improvement all around. That starts with me. I have to coach better...and the players have to be focus on some fundamentals. So, we're going to look at some film today and then head out to the practice field tomorrow and try to fix a few things."

BB after a 14 point win.

"Good, solid victory all around yesterday. The [other team] came ready to play and gave us all we could handle. I liked a lot of what I saw, but it's pretty clear there's still room for improvement all around. I know I can do a better job and that Tommy and the Captains are focusing on the stuff we need to improve. So, we're going to look at some film today and head out to the practice field tomorrow and try to get better.

Oh yeah, one more...

"Not taking anything away from... [opponent]... they did a great job/they did the things they needed to to win and we didn't."

Pretty much any time he starts talking about the Pats, win or lose, he's got to compliment the opposing team, ESPECIALLY to clarify that things the Pats need to work on aren't to say they wouldn't have kicked our butts either way.
