Patriots 53-Man Roster Projection: Can Fifth Running Back Make Team?

Saw that and thought "guess it is not too early".

QB - 3 - Brady, Garopollo, Brissett - No surprises here.

WR - 5 - Cooks, Edelman Hogan, Mitchell, Amendola - Hawkins probably gives some good competition but in the end Amendola takes the last job.

TE - 2 - Gronk, Allen - Develin as emergency TEs allow you to carry just 2 on the 53.

RB/FB - 6 -White, Lewis, Gillislee, Burkhead, Foster, Develin- Foster won't make the practice squad so you carry him or lose him. I think they try to stash him later in the year but he makes this cut.

OT - 4 - Solder, Cannon, Garcia, Flemming - Waddle loses his spot this year.

IOL - 5 - Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Karras, J. King - I don't like the options at the 5th IOL spot as much as years past I think they keep 1 more guy. It's early but I'd say King sticks.

DE - 5 - Ealy, Flowers, Rivers, Nink, Wise - No surprises here.

DT - 4 - Branch, Brown Valentine, Guy - Again no surprises.

LB - 5 - Hightower, Langi, Roberts, McClellin, Van Noy - Langi i think shoots up the depth chart very quickly. I could see them cutting McClellin as i don't think he is worth the cap hit.

CB - 5 - Butler, Gilmore, Rowe, J. Jones, C. Jones- I just don't see them giving up on Cyrus this year unless he has attitude issues and when it cost you more to cut a guy than keep him this year by a fair amount you'd like to give it another shot.

S - 5 - McCourty, Chung, Harmon, Ebner, B. King - Pats decide Richards is what he is and let him walk. I don't think he is a bad player just nothing special you need to hold on to.

STs* (forgot to put it in) - 4 - Gost, Allen, Cardona, Slater

I'd be surprised to see Richards exceed expectations & I agree that he could be left off the 53 this season. I think Foster makes the team as well, but that would/will lead to some difficult cuts. One thing that could change your projections is the (seemingly) yearly "BB wtf cut". This year's candidates could be (not that I am hoping, or saying "I believe") Solder, Amendola (who I think is so clutch I'd hate to see it happen), Butler (trade?). Ninko is a candidate to be cut if others show this summer.

Tough cuts this year. I applaud the effort, but I'm not sure how to fit all the players I like on the roster. Wouldn't mind another 8 - 10 spots.

Bolden to be cut? Lewis/White/Burkhead/Gillislee/Develin are locks imo.

Nice list! Safety David Jones is my dark horse to sneak onto the 53 - Possibly at the expense of Ebner.

Ebner, the guy who was Pro Bowl and All Pro last year and will be our ST captain when Slater retires?

Well done. I agree mostly with your picks. A few points of disagreement:

Interior OL this year looks like the spot that could be a target for a preseason/season trade in the form of Eric Rowe, Kyle Van Noy, Barkevious Mingo, etc. I'd lead the 5th interior OL spot off the roster as there isn't really a worth talent to keep there right now.

Simply put, Foster is screwed from a numbers standpoint. He will have to really shine in the preseason to be kept.

I'd keep a 6th CB who can play at the NFL level over a second ST-only safety in King. If Justin Coleman can bounce back or Kenny Moore continues to earn 2nd team reps at training camp it'd be wise to keep them instead of having Leblanc 2.0.

I think it would be helpful to list everyone on the current roster that doesn't make the cut at each position. I know this is your post, not mine, but we can only remember some people off the top of our heads. Make it easier for us so we don't have to keep consulting the roster.

A couple quick comments:

Several UDFAs could beat some of these guys. The Northwestern WR could beat Amendola. Either of the super athletic safeties could beat Harmon or King (even Ebner? hard to say... I admit to not studying special teams enough.). The NT Augusta has a shot to upend someone. Max Rich might be a better value than J. King for the last OL spot.

I made a full roster prediction soon after the draft. I'll dig that up next time I reply to this thread.

OFFENSE (subtract two, add two)
1) 9th OL - I don't there will be one. If there is one, it will be McDermott someone not here yet.
2) For me, any roster without Slater is a "fail". Did I miss his name?
3) I would replace Foster with a special teamer: O'Shaunessy or Bolden.

DEFENSE
Your shot at a roster seems fine. Personally, I think that Freeny won't be the odd man out at LB; but he certainly could be.

The open question is regarding the backup to Chung. Who is he?

Good list Bob, when you look at the 53 man roster all written down, it's scary how talented and deep it is.
The interior of our o line is probably the one area that lacks depth, but compared to every other team in the league, that's not bad at all.

I also think you might see a 3rd tight end instead of the 6th RB on offense.

Ebner, the guy who was Pro Bowl and All Pro last year and will be our ST captain when Slater retires?
Maybe its a long shot that he will get cut, but not due to his 2nd team All Pro special team status but due to Belichick's glowing account of his work ethic. Belichick doesn't give a bleep about Pro Bowls, but its no secret he loves this kid.

Its a harsh prediction, but I personally find Ebner's special teams contributions to not be significant enough to consider him a lock. That coupled with Chung's age (lack of depth at SS), Ebner's limitations as a legitimate defensive contributor, the arrival of ace ST'er Rex Burkhead are other contributing factors.

On a side note Jordan Richards (other backup to Chung) is hanging by a thread.

Did you forget McDermott or you really think he doesn't make the team?

Did you forget McDermott or you really think he doesn't make the team?

I won't answer for Bob; but I don't think that McDermott will make the team. I can't see him beating out Fleming, although he could. He seem much more likely to be headed for the Practice Squad.

I'll give it a shot, if for no other reason than to laugh at the list 12 weeks from now.

QB (3) - Brady, Garoppolo, Brissett

OT (4) - Solder, Cannon, Garcia, McDermott
Fleming may make the roster due to OT/TE versatility
Cuts: Waddle and the 3 udfa (Croston, Jelks, Rich)

IOL (5) - Thuney, Mason, Andrews, Karras and Farris?
I'll go with Farris over Ferentz and King since he has a year in the system.

RB (4) - White, Burkhead, Gillislee, Lewis
I would like to include Foster, but couldn't find room. Daniels could find his way to the practice squad if Foster decides his best bet is on another team. Another possibility is to keep Foster over Jordan Richards.

FB (1) - Develin over Glenn Gronk

TE (3) - Gronk, Allen, O'Shaugnessy
Despite some minicamp drops I'm not yet ready to cut Allen. Just a guess, O'Shaugnessy over Lengel, as well as the rookies (Hollister, Cotton). I don't want to go in to the season with only two tight ends, though that could open up another roster spot (Foster, Slater, Fleming, some udfa I overlooked, etc.)

WR (5) - Edelman, Cooks, Hogan, Mitchell, Amendola
Besides being clutch, Amendola still offers value as a sub for Jules and on returns. Hawkins is the tough cut, as is Carr. Lucien, D White and Hollister just have too many better players ahead of them.

DE (5) - Flowers, Wise, Ealy, Rivers, Ninkovich
Nink could very well be gone, but I'm not ready to bury him yet. For the time being there's no better option as a fifth DE. Grissom is no longer needed with the new additions.

DT (4) - Branch, Brown, Guy, Valentine
Hamilton, Kilgo, Augusta and A Butler battle for the practice squad.

LB (5) - Hightower, Van Noy, McClellin, Langi, Roberts
Bates or Ellis (or even Freeny) could make it over Roberts, who was a non-factor (only 19 snaps) on special teams last year.

CB (4) - Butler, Gilmore, Rowe, C Jones
Usually the third safety plays the slot, but Rowe is a better fit for outside. Regardless, he still offers value in case of injury. Not convinced Cyrus Jones sticks.

S (4) - McCourty, Chung, Harmon, Richards
With Ebner and Brandon King also on the roster as special teamers, is there really a need for Jordan Richards also at safety? If not one of the rookies (D Jones, Thompson, Travis) could also conceivably replace Richards.

ST (3) - Gostkowski, Allen, Cardona

ST (3) - King, Ebner and J Jones make the team because of ST, not their position. Slater will turn 32 when the season kicks off; his release would not be a shock. Some undrafted rookie I neglected to include can replace Bolden, who no longer offers enough value as a running back.

IOL - 5 - Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Karras, J. King - I don't like the options at the 5th IOL spot as much as years past I think they keep more a guy. It's early but I'd say King sticks.

IOL (5) - Thuney, Mason, Andrews, Karras and Farris?
I'll go with Farris over Ferentz and King since he has a year in the system.

I'm going to spin the IOL wheel too...mine comes up Jamil Douglas.

It's too early for me to do a full 53 breakdown this season, but I think we need to keep the possibility of an unbalancing of the roster in mind, given starter/legit roster player numbers at certain positions (RB, WR for example).
