Pre-Free Agency 2023

Ok, as I don't really care to much about cap space, that something NFL owners creates to increase thier profit margin.

Teams can do whatever they want to in order tomake a deal with a player...

Just like I've mentioned Jones can be resigned to a incentive laden, front loaded deal with a large signing bonus.. on a 2 yr deal.. it's been done before with Chung!
What also happens is that in the intervening year, agents and GMs talk off the record about players coming up toward free agency and about what they might be worth. So a Tee Higgins gets to decide, do I sign an extension with the Bengals to provide for me if I get injured this upcoming season or do I get to free agency, knowing that teams value me in the $x-$x million range. A lot of them take the security of the extension.

Higgins is NOT on the trading block according to his GM:

Higgins isn’t on the trading block until he is. We have heard this one before. A GM says there is no way he is trading a player and a few months later that player is traded in a blockbuster deal.

Absolutely agree mike,

Most of these players have so many people counting on them as far as family. So they are under pressure for the financial security.. So definitely can't balme them. From what I can see and as you've made mention it's likely we're looking at tier 2, also I wanted to ask would you look at adding another TE?

Agreed, but the Bengals have a window and they might not want to take the chance of messing with their offense.

It's also pretty rare that the Pats are the buyers in those blockbuster trades.

I've heard this is a great TE draft. I hope they add a TE or two that way.

Surprisingly, there are quite a few good ones this year.

I don't know why Broderick Jones is considered so much better than Darnell Wright or Dawand Jones who aren't considered first rounders.

But I'm looking at the following tackles and thinking we can grab at least one up in the 1st 3 rounds: Brod Jones, Paris Johnson, Skoronski, Wright, Dawand Jones, Bergeron, Harrison, Duncan, Mauch, Steen and Freeland.

Then there are middle round guys like Haggard, Daniels, Carter Warren and Galvin (who the Patriots already really liked down at the Shrine Bowl).

I'm seeing 11 tackles for the 1st 3 rounds.

A bunch of guys who can start in rounds 4 and 5.

Then a slew of developmentals in 6 and 7.

My strategy would be to look for one in round 2 UNLESS the top 2 CBs are gone and also Paris and Broderick are available. Then take a flyer on a later rounder
Would you hold off on a tackle in the early rounds of the draft / free agency if you've seen good things from a guy like stueber this off season? Looks healthy, ready to play this year?

No! I think we absolutely need one stud. I am gun shy after seeing Wynn, Cajuste and McDermott out there.

We have (or had) 3 really bad RTs. We simply need someone over there whether it's Trent moving over or a rookie or someone in FA.

I don't trust anyone on the current roster.

I am not saying the Pats would give up what is needed to acquire and sign Higgins, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Higgins is traded as soon as a few weeks from now.

But Burrow is young and the Bengals are notoriously cheap. They may be willing on betting on building a contender for years to come than keeping the band together for one last run with this group. And they are already likely to lose a few big pieces this off-season.

If we don't have the top 2 cBs at 14 and 2 OTs are already taken . It might be better to trade down to 27 or 28 , get an extra mid 40s pick and draft Darnell wright, dawaand Jones and the best available CB /WR / TE with 46th pick .

Zay flowers however looks super intriguing and somehow his twitches reminds me of deebo samuels. But knowing our wr draft history I would be okay if they double dip in 3rd and 4th rounds with BPA.

I went to one article that revisits the 2019 draft and saw that majority of teams had whiffed barring chiefs, rams and 49ers . No wonder they seem to be consistently good enough last 3 years ( rams this year was outlier)

All of us were pretty much amped about 2019 draft . Just did not work out. Hopefully 2021 and 2022 draft brings us back to mean . 2020 is already a home run with uche, onwenu and Dugger 3 starters. 2021 we have our potential QB of future, Rham , barmore and possibly bledsoe.

If we manage to hit this draft out the park and Marcus Jones , Thornton and strange emerge on offense while Jack Jones continues his man coverage , let Bob start spinning the yarn .

If we get offense to be a top 10 offense this year I would want Bob to become the HC in 2025.

If and a big if... Trent Brown can return to the dominant lineman he showed.. then that helps tremendously... so let's see what Klemm can get out of him.. still would like to get some O linemen in the draft as I'm sure most of us would

I am okay if we draft 2 olinemen in first 3 rounds. We might start slow but slowly start to perform better when the OLine gels together.

Yes, very true. It must be OT in R1 and hopefully another later, plus an OT FA.

Broderick Jones or, after a trade-down or two, Anton Harrison in the 1st round; Wisconsin Center Joe Tippmann at #76 has the size to back up multiple positions while he learns behind Andrews; then another college LT some time during Day 3 such as Jaxson Kirkland, Connor Galvin, Ryan Hayes. or TJ Bass from Oregon, new OL Coach Yo Adrian Klemm's most recent employer...

We've talked about this before but I think if they see a blue-chip defensive piece (CB, DL, etc.) at 14, they're going to be hard-pressed to pass on him even for a LT.

CB yes... ALL other positions on defense, then No. Still true after a trade-down or two...

Are we going to pay Onwenu next year? Or Hines or Tippman takes his place? What is your plan with Onwenu? Have to address the Onwenu replacement this draft?

I assume we sign a RT in FA and the Day 3 LT guy is a backup.

Penalty ??: Excessive use of Onwenu in a single post.
