Colorado School of Mines? Yikes; that is digging deep. Who would have thought they even had a football team. Would it be like drafting someone from my old alma matter (and Brown) Bryant College?

Depends, do the kids at Bryant run the risk of killing anyone if they're off by a decimal or two? (Please don't say yes, you already frighten us badly enough.)

I see that Martez Wilson had a personal workout. Does anyone know if he had a visit?

I think this kid might be this year's Clay Mathews -- a linebacker with great speed and athleticism who played out of position in college and would be more effective when turned loose on the edge. If you think about it, he's probably going to be less of a chore to convert to 3-4 OLB than guys like Reed, Aldon Smith, even Robert Quinn, since he already has a lot of experience on his feet, dropping and so on.

I'd not be too hung up on who visits and who doesn't. The fact we've shown interest is enough.

And by the way, I really like the kid.

Thanks for doing this, great job.

Some thoughts on the numbers.

Firstly - well down on last year at this point. Remember though, we're listed interest that's been reported. To go all Donald Rumsfeld for a moment - we're listing the known knowns, we know there are known unknowns, and unknown knowns, as for the unknown unknowns - they'll just have to wait for now.

We only drafted two of the 121 players from this list. I believe this is similar to last years list too. Lesson is not to put too much emphasis on who the Pats bring in for pre-draft visits

Yea. I think that the key is that the Patriots bring in a lot of players that they have questions about. A good example might be Allen Bailey; I suspect that wanted to spend some time with him and try to gauge his knowledge of the game and ability to learn new stuff. With Mallet it was a question of judging his personal integrity....

The Patriots apparently did not have any questions about Ras-I; they knew he was a super high-character guy with great athletic ability.

looking now in hindsight at this list (good job BTW on those who updated it):

OLB/DE: Greg Romeus, Pittsburgh - V

= official team onsite visit. As I understand it, teams medical people can perform tests and such on a official visit. NEP had chance to draft him in 7th round and instead took a likely ST with little / no starting calibre value. I know BB values special teams - but what that pick tells me IMHO - is that the Pats onsite medical check basically disqualified Romeus from our draft board. I mean if you don't even use a 7th rounder on a position of need- then he must be Patriots medically disqualified.

P.S. I didn't realize Solder was in for an official visit (as well as Tyron Smith). Makes me even feel better about the # 17 pick. Sounds like Giants and Colts also wanted him. :singing:

Colts had Solder rated higher than Smith.

Re: More info on TE Josh Baker...

We have him listed as:TE: Josh Baker, Northwest Missouri - APD (BF)

More accurately, he's considered a FB/TE/H-back. Evidently, the Pats worked him out -- and have shown more interest than most:

Bearcats await NFL futures - Maryville, MO - Maryville Daily Forum

Baker has held private workouts with the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots, but that doesn't necessarily mean those are the only two teams he could get drafted by.

"They showed me a good deal of interest, but I've also been in contact with 12 other teams," said Baker. "It could be one of those teams I've been in contact with for the past month or so. It could be a team I talked to for 15 minutes and just came out of the blue. There's no method to the madness."

Teams such as New England and Philadelphia, who love to uncover unheralded gems, know his name and background. Everybody knows his draft grade; sixth round at best, to probable free agent. And they have his number.
---

Baker went undrafted...

Re: More info on TE Josh Baker...

Recap by Reiss on draft picks and visits:
New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

1. OT Nate Solder -- Had his scheduled visit to Gillette Stadium canceled at the last minute. The canceled visit was ikely a result of the Patriots not needing any more information, and perhaps not wanting to tip their hand.

2a. CB Ras-I Dowling -- Did not make a pre-draft visit.

2b. RB Shane Vereen -- Did not make a pre-draft visit, but noted that director of Player Personnel Nick Caserio put him through a private workout.

3a. RB Stevan Ridley -- Said he visited the Patriots at Gillette Stadium at the same time as quarterback Ryan Mallett.

3b. QB Ryan Mallett -- Quarterback visited the Patriots, breaking down film with Bill Belichick, a week before the draft.

5. OL Marcus Cannon -- Had a pre-draft workout with the team.

5b. TE Lee Smith -- Had a pre-draft workout with the team, and was visited by the Patriots at his Tennessee home.

6. OLB Markell Carter -- Had a pre-draft workout with the team.

7. DB Malcolm Williams -- Opened eyes with a strong performance at TCU's Pro Day.

Depends, do the kids at Bryant run the risk of killing anyone if they're off by a decimal or two? (Please don't say yes, you already frighten us badly enough.)

Be scared. My roommate "Ace" was dead slobbery drunk every night except Tuesday; Tuesday night was his study night and he bragged to me that this was the only day of the week that his pee did not run clear. The rest of the week he lived on beer and bad music. We did play some flag football and he was a skillful DB in spite of the fog. Not like I was particularly sober. The movie Animal House had just come out and we did our best to emulate Delta House.

The scary part is that the guys I partied with are captains of industry these days. Accountants seem to rise rapidly through the ranks; it seems as if many top execs are accountants. Controlling expenses and cutting costs and that stuff I guess.

Not sure what happened to Ace. He was a nice enough guy and probably sobered up and is probably (like Bluto Blutarsky at the end of Animal House) gone on to great things.

Went to school with a guy who was stoned 24/7/365, though he was one of those folks with whom it's really difficult to tell and with whom one always felt comfortable when he was in charge. He ended up as admin of a nuclear weapons facility. No joke. The funny thing is, I actually felt MORE secure after I learned that.

Agreed, a stoned admin of a nuclear facility sounds like a safe thing for the world in general,

There's got to be few jokes in there,,,

Some thoughts on the numbers.

Firstly - well down on last year at this point. Remember though, we're listed interest that's been reported. To go all Donald Rumsfeld for a moment - we're listing the known knowns, we know there are known unknowns, and unknown knowns, as for the unknown unknowns - they'll just have to wait for now.

Last year we listed 178 players, and managed to (somehow) hear about 34 visits. With 2 more unreported. The limit is only 30!

Agreed, a stoned admin of a nuclear facility sounds like a safe thing for the world in general,

There's got to be few jokes in there,,,

Not sure why weed is illegal at all. Stoned people are great.
