Players we need to get

But, for the sake of argument, suppose that Green Bay had traded their #5 pick for Matt Cassel (no criticism here, please, this is just an example), and couldn't find a partner to trade down. Would he have taken Hawk or Sims?

I have no doubt that forced to draft at #1, Belichick would have taken Hawk last year.

See I think he would of taken Sims. but what do I know...

Ok, its clear that we are wokring on two separate draft theories. I am drafting for need, while you are drafting for BPA. If the Pats draft a WR with #24, I might throw up. I think that DB and LB and far and away our biggest need, with WR a distant third. If there is no trade down from #28, IMHO we need to spend our two first round picks on our two positions of need. I completely understand where you are coming from with the BPA theory, but I subscribe to the need theory.

Cousin, I agree with you. This draft is not that good. King states that there are really only 18 pics that are first rounder material. The good news is the Pats have more interest in players in the mid rounds it seems. The other piece of good news is that the needs we have at DB are pretty deep. LB is fair.
I like the BPA theory if we had no holes. Cousins we have holes.

I know there is a decent WR class too, but why waste a pick if a hole can be filled as long as it is not JAG. We need ILB help. If Meachem is on the board as rated higher but Harris is one or spot drops down, you've got to take Harris. WR is pretty full as is O Line. Yes, both can upgrade, but at the expense of having Baker as a safety this year and Alexander at ILB? All the super threads can argue all they want, they know need is important in this day and age.

Example: Assante pulls a Branch. Hobbs gets the #1 CB. Now we have an unsigned Gay and perhaps a very slow Scott, some guy they just got from the Fins who I believe is layed up in a hospital in BoraBora and won't be ready to play till 2010. and maybe FS Wilson. Well the big contest will be to see who makes the IR first, Gay OR Wilson. (I am starting a pool!) BUT...... we have drafted Joe Staley an OT to take Lights place when he retires and a WR from Tenn. that will be our protection for 2008 in case we can't sign Stallworth or Washington or Gaffney or Caldwell. Yes.........but can any of those heroes play CB this year?

Another Example: We have a safety who is 5' 10" did the matador routine on Joseph Adai when the Colts scored the final TD (that was embarrassing. He did not want to hit him with one minute to go in the Championship game, and oh yes, he wasn't in the endzone yet). He also hasn't covered anyone since 2003 BUT.......the experts say he is getting better. Better than what, Dexter Reid? So lets draft a punter (BPA!) rather than a safety. After all, we have four.

The important Thread guys tell me that the new excess bodies can be worked into the rotation and build depth. How many of you agree that the Pats have a shot at the SB this year? Why screw around with a fourth or fifth roster guard or something.
I have to go with you on positional pics this year.

theres no way you'd get a LB for stallworth-his deal was essentially a 1 yr contract w/ like an 8 mil option at the end of the year which we will def not pickup, making him a UFA.

Let us remember that Chris "I can't cover my own grandmother" Canty was drafted for need.

there is a blast from the past. I was watching the 98 Vikings on NFL Network. Jimmy Hitch****.

Chris Canty was drafted to be a nickel back which was unheard of. At least when they found out he could not play is what they said.
Bobby Grier did that one.

We draft for need every year I'm not sure why people dispute this

We don't draft for need. We take the best player who fits the system the best that there is a need for.

A better, yet even more awkward way of phrasing it, is that we don't draft for need, but we steer away from positions of clear un-need.

Belichick won't (as I understand it) go into the draft to target a CB first, then a LB, then a S, then a TE. Instead, he'll take the best player who fits the team, but skip over the guys that we can't use, like QBs, Cs, RBs, until they become values too good to pass up.

I f we are to make a move on Willis it will come from pick#8,9 , 10, or 11. IF we don't move on #11, Buffalo will take him at #12.

Is it worth giving up our 2 #1's and getting a third? If he is going to be a pro-bowl player for us for 6 years, I would say yes.

I know "fan" is short for "fanatic", but Jeebus that's a lot to put on a guy who's never played a down. Really, I'd compare him to London Fletcher. If he has Fletcher's career, then he's worth the price paid, but I don't even think Fletcher has played in six pro-bowls.

Actually it's not being a fan. I have gone through many scouting reports on this guy and have yet to see one that doesn't say he has "pro bowl" potential. I have yet to see one that said of his "warts" did not get far outweighed by his positives. I have yet to see one that said he didn't have the "intangibles" to make an immediate impact on a team and make players around him bettter.

I think that he is the equal of Hawk. Plus Hawk played on a team,OSU, full of NFL type players. I've only seen one other Ole Miss player listed as draftable and that will be a late rounder.

Any player you take in the draft is a "prospect " until he proves it. But, he is as close to a sure thing as many rated higher than him. Only CJ is more of a sure thing.

It will make me sick to see him go to Buffalo.

I think this will be my last post about Willis, I'm getting sick of myself.:singing: I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

Do you remember Brian Bosworth? Tony Mandarich? Todd Marinovich?

Absolutley. Actually Bos started out well but then had a couple of bad injuries. The other two were either head cases or on roids.

None were drafted by this Patriots regime. As you know, this regime checks out every thing 100 times. So if they make that trade up, you can be assured that they feel this is a must get player in every way.

If not, get Harris.
