Re: Elvis Dumervil is a FA Next Season

I would let Neal walk if it meant a premiere pass rusher coming aboard.

It would mean that we would see Brady get killed in the backfield just as much, if not more, than we've seen in the past three games.

Re: Elvis Dumervil is a FA Next Season

A kicker is a kicker... i wouldnt lose sleep over losing Gostkowski..

Wilfork is a priority... So is Mankins... I would let Neal walk if it meant a premiere pass rusher coming aboard.

have you been watching the O line get beat by 3 man fronts ever since neal has been hurt he maybe playing better then mankins right now

Re: Elvis Dumervil is a FA Next Season

Since AD is all but gone, there is a few million saved from cutting him. The D could definitely use anybody that can pressure the QB.

Re: Elvis Dumervil is a FA Next Season

Be careful the one year wonder...

I feel the same way, he could just be another Albert Haynesworth. Only playing good in a contract year. If that's the case, then sign him to a 1 year deal...

Re: Elvis Dumervil is a FA Next Season

No pass rushing free agents. We find our own talent this year BB.

Re: Elvis Dumervil is a FA Next Season

Denver is going to franchise the guy unless they get a deal done or there is no CBA (where they will tender him the highest RFA tender). There is next to zero chance the Pats will get him.

The only top free agent pass rushers the Pats will have realist chances of getting are Julius Peppers (I doubt the Panthers will give him over $20 million for a franchise tag tender when they have so many other issues) and Shawne Merriman (AJ Smith hates the guy and has already basically said that he won't seek to resign him, but he only has 4 sacks this year and an injury history and other problems).

I think this would be a collosal failure if they signed him. I don't think he could set the edge, I don't think coverage would be all to great. Sure if we want someone who can get after the QB that would be great. But couldn't we have gotten that one trick pony last year in the draft in the form of a legit pass rusher? The fact is the need was ignored that's why the panic trade of Burgess was made.

I wouldn't minimize the importance of a really good consistant kicker. Missin Sisson gave me nightmares.

Bingo. Dumervil will be an RFA if there is an uncapped year, and will almost certainly be franchised if he is a UFA.

I'm personally very interested in Merriman right now. Earlier I would have said no way, but right now a high intensity guy who never quits wouldn't be a bad thing to have on this team. Yes he comes across as a jerk, but so did Rodney Harrison, who turned out to be one of the great pick ups of all time. Adalius Thomas came across as a choir boy, and look at how he turned out. Even though Merriman has only 4 sacks he's still coming back from injury, he plays hard every play, and he's gotten a lot of QB pressure than he has sacks. Besides, higher sack totals this year would just drive his price up.

As you say, there's a good chance SD won't seek to re-sign Merriman. His relationship with AJ Smith has not been good, and SD has a lot of other priority re-signings. The question is, if he is an RFA (which is likely, as an uncapped year seems all but certain), will SD tender him, and if so, at what level?

Merriman is a name that interests me as well. I wouldn't have considered him a few years ago because the price tag would have been insane. He could be a great value pick-up as he struggles to come back from injury. And unlike Dumervil, he's done it for several years.

I'd imagine SD would tender him rather than let him get away for nothing. As much as AJ dislikes the guy, he knows other teams will give up something. My guess would be the second-round tender if they're serious about getting rid of him, as I could imagine a lot of teams willing to take a gamble with that.

But I think Dumervil would be quite expensive and a big risk.

I would mind seeing any of the following brought in:

UFAS: Feagles - P, Clark - LB, Robbins - DT/DE, Terrelle Smith - FB, Chester Taylor - RB, Scott Fujita - OLB, Antonio Bryant - WR, Karlos Dansby - ILB (would have to be franchised as a QB), Ryan Denney, Kyle Van Den Bosch - DE

RFAs: Miles Austin - WR

I don't believe Peppers would be worth bringing in. We don't need an Adalius Thomas Part II.. And that's what I believe we'd be getting.

We agree on most of those names. The only ones I would question are Terrelle Smith, as I still don't think this offense will use a FB, and Fujita, who I see more as a 4-3 OLB. But Robbins would be right along of the lines of Pickett or Edwards, who I have on my list.

Hanson's having a pretty good year. Feagles is as old as dirt.

Why on earth will Arizona and San Diego not try and re-sign these guys - get real, its likely they will stay where they are one way or another

As for Dansby, Arizona has been trying to sign him. They've not come to an agreement.. And they've been going for 3 years now. If Arizona were to attempt to Franchise him, he'd be franchised at the most expensive salary position. Which is currently QB.. I don't see Arizona doing that.

As for Merriman. He's not been the same since he came off the juice. Not to mention that he's got legal issues...

Good catch. And, thank God, he has six years of service, so they can't just RFA tender him, either.

[For those who don't know: the CBA has a rule that states that if a team franchises a single player three times (IIRC, not even consecutively), then they must pay 120% of the previous year's salary or the franchise number for the highest-paid position (i.e., QB right now, which was $14.6M this year), whichever is greater. So, if, for the sake of argument, a team franchised a punter three times, they'd have to guarantee him >$14M for one year.]
