Peppers trade rumor on the radio

A couple of things.
Does Thomas or any of our other guys have any dealings with Peppers?
College teammate etc.? I wonder if there are any connections.
Any paralells between Thomas and Peppers? Thomas would be his mentor ( along with Vrabel et al).

If Peppers DID'NT work out at OLB, would we move him to end and let someone else go?
Is there a backup plan for him if he soes'nt transition well.

Regardless, I think Cassell is more valuable than Peppers. Straight up.

Is Colvin planning on playing this year?

Is Colvin planning on playing this year? Haven't heard much but I would guess he would for the right team and money

I responded in red just some of my thoughts....

I have a question for anyone not related to these. He persumably would be taking a pay cut to be OLB instead of DE right???

That is a good point, you would presumably believe that he himself priced himself out of DE money by saying he wanted to be a OLB.

Remember Suggs is an OLB that claims he should be paid DE money, because that is what he "truly" is.

His financial intrests are certainly a factor.
I'm guessing he has made quite a bit of money so far.
Was he smart with his dough?
Does he need a big payday?
Or does he want a shot at a title?
Does he relish the idea of working with BB et al?

This is an intriguing thread.

My overall point was if he is willing to take a cut to try a new position might he further the cut to make sure he winds up in a place where he can win a title and place where he might have better chance of being successful in the switch?????

Im having a hard time buying a close friends of his called a radio station and gave up this kind of news, too many things need to happen in order for the Pats to get Pep I just dont see it happening.

I say NO peppers. Not that I don't want him...he'll be too much money. Even if we trade cassel, we only have 19.35M to spend unless we give some guys extensions which will give some players less this year, but secure long term money. Wilfork is one, A MUST. I think BB gets that done. As far a LB, look for our first pick to be a LB. Colvin I think will come back because he'll play for less than a million, and maybe sign a vet like Boley, or isn't Brooking a FA?

with a doubt this is very far fetched rumor but one can hope right....once upon a time I used to trade Dillon and Moss to the Pats in Madden and thought it too would be crazy.

On the other hand, I just looked at the Panthers depth chart for QB's, They have a 34 yr old guy who has never had an above average year....EVER, was injured in 2007 played 3 games, and two back ups who have never played a down. They might make a move for Cassel. Hopefully that DOES include Peppers. But again, it'll have to depend on his contract negotiations. We prob wouldn't sign him to anything more than 5/60M. Hope it happens

I agree anything can happen, if this story were coming from a legit or even just ok source then it would be more believable. The fact that a so called friend of pep called in makes my highly question the caller.

If Carolina is soon to be over the cap by franchising Peppers, then I don't see how any trade involving a swap of Peppers for Cassel is possible. Cassel will cost more than Peppers this year. You can't trade one money problem for a bigger one. I say Carolina isn't even in the Cassel mix.

Well, the theory would be that Carolina would cut Delhomme.

not sure how the CBA factors in but persumably the team aquiring isn't going to have a 14 mil hit for Cassel this year....First the average of his long term deal wont reach 14 mil a year despite the tag number and you can back load some of the wieght of the long term deal so really Carolina could save some coin on the cap this year if they were to get Cassel and move Delhome because they could structure the first year of the deal to be less than Delhome

Actually Peppers cost more. Peppers would be paid $16.683 million while Cassel would be paid 14 million.

I thought Peppers franchise number was just below 10 mil?

In your opinion what do you think is the biggest hurdle for a 4-3 DE to convert to a 3-4 OLB?

I don't know. It's a completely different position. It's not like a different linebacker or line spot. It would be different if he'd tried it and we could judge.

Usually OLB converts are "tweeners". Good rushers who aren't as tall or as devastating, but have the ability to change direction, hit whatever. I am not a football personnel expert.

The tallest linebacker ever, that i can find was Ted Hendricks. He was the same height as Peppers, but at 220 was a lot different body type than a 283 pounder.

Covering running backs, changing direction, getting down for tackles, I think your center of gravity might come into play as well as other natural physics of a players 3-4 inches shorter. Our linebackers are heavier than most, but not 283.

I'd love to have a devastating pass rusher, in fact that is my number #1 desire for the new season.

Other than wishful thinking, what evidence is there that Peppers can make the switch others haven't been able to?

Reading that ESPN article (which I still can't believe has any association to that rejectified sports channel) I'm guessing the qualities that give Bill the idea a player can make the switch are things he can spot that may not be obvious to us as position analysts, hehe.

I think coin will make this deal tough, but with Peppers, it might be less about money than for someone like Haynesworth. Be interesting to see how it goes down, for sure. The combine is feeling like one of the less interesting off-season events this year...
