Paul Zimmerman/Dr. Z passes away

Dr Z was the best thing about Sports Illustrated. Loved getting that magazine as a kid in the 80's

At the end of each season, he graded out all the of the NFL announcing teams. He hated the pretty boy announcers who didn't do film study.

One of his biggest pet peeves was apologists and liars. When Brett Farve (as a prominent example) would throw 5 interceptions, it was always the receivers fault according to the announcers. St Brett could do no wrong. The next week in SI there would be a scathing column ripping the announcers and pointing out through his film study what really happened and how Farve was usually to blame. He did that enough times that he shamed the networks into more honest reporting.

I grew up reading Dr. Z in Sports Illustrated, and never missed his column, often skipping ahead to read it first. He was great at what he did, and he loved the sport so much. RIP Doc.

Couldn’t have said it any better than this. Being an old timer (I’m 56), I enjoyed Dr. Z’s columns for many years. RIP Mr. Zimmerman and my thoughts are with his family and friends.
