PATS TRADE JAMIE COLLINS!!!

Yes, I do. You know why? Because Belichick feels that his team is better off without Collins.

If you think they are really better off without one of their most talented players and that Belichick is 100% beyond questioning then we'll just have to agree to disagree....which is fine. Belichick obviously has a great track record, but this one is a real head scratcher. I definitely think the team can get through this but the road will be harder.

This is relevant, as is the number of snaps he played yesterday:

There are two distinct issues here:

1. Did Belichick want him out of here? If Belichick got pissed-off with his apparent freelancing and the contract dispute was going to mean an unhappy player for the duration, then maybe the decision was made to trade him without regard to compensation.

2. If so, they likely did not want to trade him to any contender. The Browns offered the best deal among the remaining dregs - 8 games of Collins is only meaningful to a contender, and so they were never going to get a great return.

Bombshell.

*Any relevance to 12-men-on-the-field--twice--yesterday?

The look on Patricia & Belichick's faces said it all.

Beyond that, I vote this one goes in the Glenn, Milloy, Moss, Mankins category of outcome.

And, NOT the Vinatieri, Branch, Seymour, Talib category.

Thank you.
Plus they only had 10 players.

Man...adds to the intrique

But he hasn't been one of their most talented players this year.

Could someone explain to me how the 3rd round comp pick we're getting from Cleveland is better than the 3rd round comp pick we would've got anyway when he walked this offseason? Given how many big-ticket FAs we have, I think it's reasonable to assume we would've got a comp pick.

It's a year earlier.

But that's about it.

Honestly, I know Collins has been banged up, but I haven't even really noticed him during games. He's kind of faded whereas a guy like Roberts has been all over the field making plays.

I don't like that the Patriots only got a 3rd rounder for Collins, I wish there was another facet to the trade such as Thomas or Hayden, but there could still be more moves to be made who knows.

So while I don't particularly like the trade, I'm not going into "oh my god we can't win the superbowl now" mode, if any team can overcome a loss like losing Collins it's this team.

You don't need 60m, to sign 1 free agents. I am not complaining, but I am pointing out, we have not signed top dollar free agents in recent years.

I would rather have kept Collins for the remainder of the year & taken the 2018 comp pick.

Could you show me where I said that the Pats needed $60M to sign 1 free agent? No. You can't.

And while you're pointing out that they haven't signed top dollar free agents in recent years, I'm pointing out that they've never had $60M in free cap space in recent years.

Yes, the priority will be on re-signing our own players, but BB will spend money to bring in others. He's going to have to with 15 UFAs going into the 2017 off-season to fill out the roster.

The Patriots have obviously been preparing for this eventuality since the spring. Signing McClellin to a moderately large deal, trading for Mingo, and the emergence of Roberts all made Collins expendable. They only play two linebackers, and Roberts and McClellin have been playing a fair amount. Hightower's obviously the superstar in the linebacking corps, even if he doesn't have Collins' insane measurables.

And I do think Curran is right, Collins, the ultra-athletic super-linebacker couldn't cover a slow, old, broken down tight end in the playoffs. Something was up with that.

I'd be happy if Thomas had come back for Collins, but there are worse things than a 3rd round pick.

The only scenario under which I could remotely defend this trade is if Belichick sat down with Collins and afterwards came to the conclusion that this whole contract situation is hurting his motivation on the field.
yep I stated that earlier in the thread.

Honest to god I was thinking the same watching yesterday's game. Didn't hear Collins name once, unlike a corner, it's never good not to hear a LBs name.

I posted several times he was not signing here ... he does not like living in the north east ... hates it.

Now he's gone ... just a bit sooner than expected.

Except this must literally be what Belichick is thinking. He wouldn't make this trade for giggles.

Fair enough, but I'd be disappointed if they traded Edelman for the same reason too. Edelman is underperforming but they are still better off with him than without him.

But anyways, I think I can leave it with something we can both agree on........it's just disappointing that it has come to this. As a 7-1 team in obvious contention it would have been nice to be a 'buyer' at the trade deadline and getting some talent re-enforcements like when we Talib. Even if the Pats make another move it will still probably be a net loss in talent. Hopefully I'm wrong though. Another day will tell.

How bad do you F up to get the "traded to Cleveland" punishment?!

What a bizarre trade...unless his agent is after like $15m a year, of course.
Wow a WTF moment for sure. But I guess we know now that they couldn't afford to resign everyone we want, and who became Mr. Expendable No. 1. Sorry to see Jamie go, however. Hope we'll be okay without his good play.

It sucks, but they've got a lot of talent at LB right now and won't have to spend a ****load of money on Collins.

I can get behind it... I guess...

Right, not that I can speak for everyone but I think the TIMING is everything in this deal. People would be disappointed but not suprised or upset if he walked in free agency during the offseason.

There's been a lot of activity on the roster with linebackers that seemed greater than placing Jonathan Freeny on IR. Veteran guys with Collins' build came aboard like Barkevious Mingo, Kyle Van Noy, and Trevor Reilly. It looks like they've been getting ready for this move.
