PATS TRADE JAMIE COLLINS!!!

Would not surprise me one bit now if by the next game we get an announcement for Hightower's extension
I thought kraft said yesterday , no likely extensions were happening in the middle of the season?

Whenever I saw people ask "Collins or Hightower?", I'd always think of Collins' letdowns in big games (see: SuperBowl pass to Lynch to start final drive + Denver AFCCG TDs) although I still thought he was a hell of a player and would undoubtedly get re-signed and clean up his coverage game.

Right but that means they keep their own and Seattle's 4th rounder.

But that means trading Collins for a late fourth rounder. However, I'm pretty sure BB and the front office are confident the Browns are getting that 3rd rounder.

If true, its pretty telling that collins is happy to be out of here.
...and that is why they traded him.

Brady is another guy on the team. I will never understand why people think he is exempt from BB's system. When the cost outweighs the production, he is gone.
Brady far outperforms his pay scale, not a realistic scenerio at this point as we all know he is vastly underpaid to what he does compared to some of the scrubs like Osweiller with that laughable 70 Mil contract

Hightower is the better, and considering his role in the locker room, the more important player. Just wish we could've kept them both this entire season. See no point in trading Collins for a low third/low fourth.

Not buying the initial takes that this is only about contract talks going south. If so, why burn the bridge now? I think Lombardi is hitting it closer:

Not surprised by the Pats trading Colllins. Not been playing well at all they need to get the defense fixed. This will get their attention

This is a Mankins or Milloy level move. Meant to send a message. The fact the return is apparently horrible is another matter.
It wasn't by design, but when Jerod went down in '14, the defense really stepped up. They clearly felt the urgent need to pick up their alertness, their communication and their game, to make up for the loss.

I think Matt and Bill weren't going to wait around this time - we're halfway through now, and if we really are going all the way this year, we'd better get it straight right now.

I do NOT want to go all the way down to Houston and lose.

I would assume "conditional" just means whether the Browns are assigned a third round comp pick or not. Every trade involving comp picks has to be conditional since they're not assigned yet.

I think that Conditional had more to do with them signing Collins and/or his play while in Cleveland. Cleveland already has 2 or 3 3rd round picks from other trades. Only time will tell what the specific conditions are.

If it's the truth (and it is) then how is it a cop out? I defer to Belichick on all things football related. Just like I'd expect him to defer to me when it comes to electronic gadgets.
Forget that BB is the HC for a second and then think about the trade in a vacuum instead of who gave it the okay and then try to tell me why it's a good deal

So.. if the Browns don't franchise Collins at 15m we can sign him still to a 11m a year offer.

...and that is why they traded him.
The only scenario under which I could remotely defend this trade is if Belichick sat down with Collins and afterwards came to the conclusion that this whole contract situation is hurting his motivation on the field.

Don't like this trade one bit, but at least it hasn't cost us a game yet.

The Pats get an cheaper rookie next year (and for the the four or five) that can help the team down the road as opposed to a very up-and-down player who was having a mostly down season this year and who was asking for an insane contract for half a season and playoffs.

I hope there are more moves coming. This team is worse today (by a decent amount defensively) than they were yesterday. HOPEFULLY our trade partners are Cleveland again, one of the Joes (Thomas or Haden). As we stand today, we are worse than after yesterday's game.

Right but that means they keep their own and Seattle's 4th rounder.
Browns' new Front Office has been stellar. At least with the racking up pick and all. If they can get a good draft now and in 2018, they could become a good team for a change (Crazy)

When was the last time the Patriots had $60M in free cap space?

You don't need 60m, to sign 1 free agents. I am not complaining, but I am pointing out, we have not signed top dollar free agents in recent years.

I would rather have kept Collins for the remainder of the year & taken the 2018 comp pick.

Collins is already starting the spin that "He'll go to a team that wants him".
