PATS TRADE JAMIE COLLINS!!!

still trying to wrap my head around this one...

you get a 3rd if you let him walk. keep your best players, win the sb then let him walk.
Except you dont get anything if you sign big name free agent .

There is no guarantee that we'd have gotten a 3rd round pick. Like so many, you forget that the Pats would have had to sign less eligible free agents than they lost for them to be eligible for a comp pick. This guarantees they get a pick in 2017. The other way doesn't.
I already addressed that in the post you were quoting, so I'm not really sure how you concluded that I forgot it.

The best case that you can make using this logic is that it was worth giving up Collins for the rest of the season and SB run to lock in the end-of-3rd-round pick that we were exceedingly likely to get anyway. Which... no.

I still think there has to be more to this trade, because it makes no sense as currently reported.

What do you expect for a guy with 10.5 career sacks. Jamie is a good player, Hes not Kuechly or Miller. The guy is not a corner stone player on a defense.
Again to the contract numbers:

Kuechly - 5 years, $61.8 million ($12.36 million per), $34 million guaranteed, signed September 2015
Wagner - 4 years, $43 million ($10.75 million per), $22 million guaranteed, signed August 2015

IF what Volin (heh) said is true and the Patriots offered $11 million per then, depending on the guarantees, it was a very fair offer. Would be (factoring in that Wagner signed the contract a year earlier) about the same as Wagner and below Kuechly.

But still, if he walks at the end of the season, he walks. But trading him for a low third?

I agree that the 'compensatory' element doesn't seem right, particularly as Cleveland aren't projected yo get a 3rd. Alex Mack seems the most likely to be worth a 3rd, but seven players signed for a higher APY thanhim.

AFAIK, there is no legislated limit on the number of comp 3's that can/must be handed out. If the formula (which is almost entirely average value) says it's a 3, it's a 3.

No. There is no guarantee that the Patriots would get a 3rd round Compensatory pick if they lost Collins. They'd only get a compensatory pick if they lost more eligible free agents than they signed.

This is a good point, considering the amount of cap space the Pats will have going into 2017.

Per various websites the Browns were expecting 3 fourth round comps for losing Alex Mack, Mitchell Schwartz and Tashaun Gipson in free agency.

NFL.com story lists it as conditional third not compensatory third though Schefter is the one breaking the story and uses compensatory and NFL states ESPN as breaking the story so very confusing what pick Patriots got?

If true, can see why:

He is so not worth that kind of money. The potential is there for greatness but three and a half years in and he is still rather inconsistent. He was already goner if that's the money he was asking for.

I am mostly concerned about this season. I don't like the thought of jeopardizing our chances by IMO, weakening the defense.

HT is here to stay, hopefully they can get Butler.

WTF?
Trade Collins?
Only a 3rd Pick?

Collins was a stud, polished former 2nd Rd pick and all we get is a 3rd rounder.

I don't get it.

How's that Chandler Jones for Cyrus Jones trade doing? So the 62nd pick in the draft can't get on the field, and they just traded Collins for 97th pick??

I thought the ridiculous trade of Chandler Jones was because the Pats needed to resign Collins and Hightower. What's the rationale for this one? This is even worse than the Chandler Jones trade, which was awful!!

What would you rather have Chandler Jones and Collins, or Cyrus Jones and the 97th pick in the 2017 draft?

You could have kept both of them, then let them walk the Pats would have ended up with the 97th and 98th picks in the 2018 draft.

So in terms of draft picks, you think we should have gotten a 2nd or 1st?
Absolutely. Collins IS a top 10 LB. His problem is inconsistency. If he would play like we've seen him play (More recently, against the Texans) for prolonged period of times, he would be the best LB in the NFL, along with Kuechly. An "almost" 4th rounder for him is absolutely ridiculous.

Put in other terms, would you trade for a Top 10 player with tremendous potential for a compensatory 3rd round pick? Yes, everyone would. But no team in the earth would do this trade. Except the Patriots, apparently

I think we will at least see Hightower get signed now....

Still think there is more to this

It's funny how fans of opposing teams are now claiming he was by far our best defensive player. Absolutely absurd. Even back in 2014 and 2015 when he played really well, I didn't think he was our best player. Certainly not this year.

It's clear that the pats chose Hightower and butler.
