Pats trade for JC Jackson

Desperate times lead to desperate actions. With all the injuries, the CB is a major problem. This is a great move given the news that Gonzo is out. The team to action to stop the bleeding by taking a risk on the health of a known commodity for very low cost. It isn't often that you get to add a player experienced in your system in the middle of the season.

Rubbish.

Ty Law was fine after he left w NYJ
A$ante was fine after he left
Darius Butler became a very good slot DB
Gilly is near the end but fine after he left w CAR
Revis was fine in 05 w/ NYJ
Ty had ONE good year with the Jets who let him go to KC where he was solid for a year He was OK in the 2nd year in KC and never played more than 7 games his last 2 years with KC and Denver.

Asante was always a very good guesser in zone defenses. He NEVER was good as a man to man defender, even in his best years here or in Philly. If you looked closely at his play he was a hit or miss defender in zones capable of lots of big plays for the defense AND the offense. Very over rated imho

Butler was waved after one season with the Panthers but had more success in Indy where he played 4 seasons alternating between S and CB, but was never a full starter with any team he played for after he left the Pats. "very good slot CB" is a bit hyperbolic

Gilly has been solid since he left the Pats as an aging starter. He's OK but wasn't nearly worth what he was looking for when he left here.

Revis was OK for the Jets in 15 but not worth the money the Jets overpaid him to comeback and his second year according to most Jets fans was a pure money grab.

Just another man's view of 5 former Pats CB's, Robert

Looking ahead to 2024 - Gonzo as your #1, Jonathan Jones as your #2, and then JC Jackson and Jack Jones competing to be the #3, with the other guy becoming #4, and Marcus Jones being #5, is just ridiculous CB depth. Obviously they have had a very unlikely amount of injuries at the position this year. If you assume only one or zero major injuries at CB next year, that group is stacked as hell and also cheap as hell.

For 2023, I have to assume Jonathan Jones is back this week or he probably would’ve gone on IR originally. If so, him + JC + Bryant + Mills moving back to corner is probably enough to get by. When Jack returns, you can think about putting Mills back at safety.

Here are the highlights. You'll see he can barely run against these guys.

I don't know if its as bad as you imply.

First JC was not on Hill all the time and not very often in man. The one time I saw him beat deep it was for a TD where he had no help over the top and guess what, Hill is faster than JC simple as that. (Great pass btw)

He got his pick covering Barios, so while I couldn't exactly figure out what SD was running, JC was covering a lot of people and looked like he was moving OK. I mean there was a reason he was undrafted. His 40 times were in the high 4.5's. I'm guessing he is a bit faster than that most likely in the high 4.4's, but he was NEVER a speed merchant. I doubt he ever matched up on Hill in man when he was in KC. Bad coaching to ever have him in man without help deep. But evidently SD did and got the expected results.

He was beat badly by Hill and Waddle on a few plays which the highlights don't show the entire angle. I watched him a lot in LA and he could barely run. He's struggled since he came back prematurely from injury.

Yup. That's true at every position in spite of the claim that Pats players don't go on to do well after they leave. Some do. Some don't.

Ty had a great year with NYJ.. fell off when he went to KC.. he even said himself. Assante was good for a little while then he fell off.. Darius butler never really did anything of significance really.. IMO. Revis fell off when he went to KC,
Gilly has been good but nothing like the DPLOY he was here..

No dislocation, though. Sounds like Jones is hoping to return in a few weeks and then get surgery in the offseason.

Oh ok.. CBS sports was reported a torn labrum

Whether the shoulder was fully dislocated or not, the damage to the labrum is the real issue. This is a serious injury that will mean a full year to recover from surgery or some level of limitations if he comes back sooner. Best case he has issues with stability and strength when reaching above his head and outside his body.

Butler did nothing? 82g w/ Colts. 12 INTs, 3 TDs, 9FF, 44 passes defensed, 196 tackles. Are you that picky to say that isn't significant for a slot CB?

I misspoke on butler I was meaning to say nothing of significance here!! He was 2nd rounder.. out of Uconn.. he was among the cast offs of CBs that just couldn't make it here.

It's a legit 8-9 month recovery time for a non athlete. I can imagine what an athlete would need for a recovery time line.

Mills hasn't been needed at safety and has gotten very few reps.

However, we have needed help at CB. Bryant and Wade are both much more trusted by Belichick at this point. So, for now, I think that Wade is the #4 CB, hopefully with very few reps. This should be the case,

OUR SECONDARY
Ja Jones, Jackson, Bryant, Wade
Dugger, Peppers, Phillips
with Mapu reducing the need for another position defensive back, occasionally playing roles played by DB's.
Hopefully Jack Jones will be added soon.
And yes, Mills is available and healthy.
=====
AND YES, this secondary is lights out for 2024.

The Massachusetts State Police is on standby.
