Pats trade for Jarrad Page, S, KC

I don't know if this guy is any good or not, as I have not watched a Chiefs game since their AFC game against the Colts a few years back (only for Ty Law). What I do know is that that the guy is young and he has started in the league, two things which count for a lot. I just hope he can add some stability to a young secondary that has recently been ravaged by injury. If he's even decent, I think that's better than nothing.

He's a safety who has tackling issues. That's not a good start.

Of course, Pollard was also a safety that couldn't tackle while he was in Kansas City, and he's looked better since going to Houston.

Respectfully disagree Andy. Page is almost as nimble as Merriweather, with a Rodney Harrison nasty streak. Hits like a freight train.

The player didnt participate in camp, and showed up Friday.
I don't dispute he could potentially be more, but the trade is a flyer, because he could walk in the door 30 lbs overweight.
By minor move, I mean its taking a chance that BB is prepared for not working out.
I think you might be overrating him a bit, because a player with the strengths of Meriwhether and Harrison would have been signed and not left to hold out, or there would have been competing offers for good comp from trade suitors.

Just out of curiosity, why do you think BB had big plans for McGowan this year?

McGowan was playing mainly LB this preseason. BB has been attempting to implement this hybrid role for a safety for 3 years now, but they keep getting hurt.

Why not use a smaller 4-3 type LB with coverage skills instead of trying to force a safety in there?

I've been thinking, could Gary Guyton fill this role, as it appears he won't be starting at ILB. He may be weak at run support but is solid in coverage, particularly on TEs. Remember his 40 time was actually faster than Meriweather and Chung.

FWIW, Herm Edwards, who formerly coached him, likes him:

”They’re getting a very smart football player, and Bill likes smart players,” Edwards said. ”He’s got great instincts. He can play in the box. He can cover tight ends. But his ball skills are what really make him stand out a little bit ahead of a lot of other guys. He’s got great anticipation. He’s just a really good football player. I really liked him.”

That's from the Herald/Rapoport:

Page should be at least as good as McGowan as our #4 safety. This is a fine acquisition.

Fair enough. I was actually pondering the possibilities of whether or not BB will tinker with the safeties by dropping an extra one into the box to try to help generate a pass rush this year. So, for the most part, I understand what you're saying.

This team and secondary injuries is so frustrating. It seems every year we lose one or two people to significant injuries in the secondary. It's so annoying. Is there another position on this team that seems to have the same track record?

No but teams like the Bills go through it just about every year as well

Not an annual event, but I recall Jacksonville being without four of the starters on their offensive line by halftime of the first game of the season a couple years ago. As bad as you may think you have it, there's always somebody else that is worse off.

Remember that time we lost Brady? That sucked the big one.

BB mentioned in his press conference today that he had seen Page play and I went back to that game, opening day of '08 and looked up the stat sheet. 5 solo tackles, two assists and one forced fumble. Coach must have liked what he saw that day and since..
Sort of the Wes Welker effect. See what a guy does against you and hope he does it for you. For baseball purists and those with long memories, hope it is not the Danny Cater effect. He killed the Red Sox in the early 70's so they traded for him and then he was a .230 hitter....

Well, that was mostly an excuse to get rid of Bill Lee.

That was Sparky Lyle not Bill Lee. Of course Lyle was a mainstay for the Yanks while Cater sucked and was soon gone. Lee was traded to the Expos for the immortal Stan Papi.

can page play on special teams? I hope he blocks as mean as he hits, cause tate might take it to the house more often if page can play on special teams.

Yeah, thank JEEBUS we only gave up that #$%^&*, Sparky Lyle, for'm.

Answer:

1972.
1975.
1977.
1978.

Question: What World Series Championships would the Red Sox have won, if their Sparky Lyle Trading Privileges had been revoked, prior to 1972??

If I EVER make my 10 Billion, I am taking that operation OVER.

Of course, that is NOTHING, compared to the cost incurred by the Satanic selling of ALL the following to the New York KnickerBockers:

(If you're not from or of New England, you will NEVER be a Yankee)

SP Carl Mays
SP Bullet Joe Bush
SP Sad Sam Jones
SP Herb Pennock
SP Waite Hoyt
SP Red Ruffing

SS Everett Scott
C Wally Schang
3B Joe Dugan

....and you may've heard'f their Left Fielder.

***

These 10 players ~ excluding Ruffing ~ were all given away in the early 20's by Harry Frazee, between 1919 and 1923.

The Red Sox had built THE Greatest Dynasty in Sports History, winning 5 World Series from 1903 to 1918...and winning a 6th, by default, when the pansies of New York didn't have the balls to face the Champs!!

And if SCUMBAG Frazee hadn't sold the team, piece by piece, we would've won at LEAST another 5 more in the 20's.

The Reputation that the KnickerBockers earned in the 20's ~ the Reputation that was forged as much from OUR players, as from their OWN ~ would've been OURS...and would've been TWICE as auspicious, due to our building not a 10 year Dynasty, as the Knicks did, but a 30 YEAR Dynasty...with at least 10 World Series Championships.

And considering that the Draft wasn't initiated until 1965, the virtually unregulated recruiting of young talent that went on, over the decades and decades before then, would've probably gone remarkably differently: I cannot COUNT the number of books I've read by players who grew up longing to become part of the "Yankee" legend of the KnickerBocker Nine.

Who KNOWS how many of them ~ and MORE!! ~ would've grown up longing to part of the legendary RED SOX!!

*With Yawkey taking over in 1933, we had enough money to compete with New York for Scouting and Bonuses...and the reputation of a team ~ ours ~ that'd already won 10 or more World Championships in 30 years would've DWARFED that of the perennial also-rans of New York.

The History of BaseBall from 1933 to 1964 might've gone VERY differently.

But, no: I'm NOT bitter!!
