IMO Sanders is an excellent on field communicator, understands his assignments, is durable, coachable and a good locker room presence. What he does not do particularly well is cover or tackle in space. He also does not play with violence or intimidation. For a starting strong safety those are concerns.

I think it was a stroke of desparation signifying they couldn't put pressure on the qb with a regular rush. do you really want to expose your secondary?

Great comparison. And no offense, but whoever said he was more of a Mel Mitchell replacement made me chuckle. How exactly is it that you replace a guy who never plays? ;)

Rodney was actually playing LB in the postseason on several occasions. That doesn't "expose" the secondary. It adds versatility to the D and takes advantage of his pass rush ability. It was something we hadn't seen much of and it worked well vs SD especially.

If he's here by Sept. I will be surprised. He was unnoticeable while playing for TN.

Tank Williams was unnoticeable for the TN? You might say that if you were watching the Volunteers, but not the Titans. Williams was a damn good safety for them. Tennessee lost him because they were still in cap hell from McNair and George.

Really?!? He was third in tackles in 2005 for the Titans (78 tackles with three for a loss). And he had only three less than the #2 tackler. I don't know if he was unnoticable. He was one of the bigger free agents in the 2006 offseason too. He wasn't one of the elite ones, but he was high as the second wave free agent acquistions.

You're exactly right. And if he stays on the field he'll be an upgrade to boot.

You know the Pats are signing lots of guys with ST ability but it's "coverage" ST ability. That's not bad but the Pats were one of the better ST coverage teams last year. They need (ed) some big play return ability. So signing these guys is not too exciting for me. Kind of like doing due dilligence. gettting back-ups lined up in case your real guys get hurt. What....hmmm nevermind. I'll make a new thread.

i'd love to see the salary they gave him.they dont have too much cap room left considering they need a lot for the draft picks.

Kind of surprising. This guy's been free about a zillion times when they needed secondary help in the past few years and they don't bring him in until now. Odd, but once upon a time he was one of the league's rising stars at safety with the Titans.

Tank Williams is a strong safety who is coming off a major injury from 2 years ago.

Making the assumption that it means Meriweather is moving to CB is just stupid and shows a severe lack of forethough on your part.

Williams was a reserve last year for the Vikings and is here on a one year "prove yourself" deal. He'll be going against Ray Ventrone for Mel Mitchell's spot on the coverage units.

He's not be "free about a zillion times" over the past 2 years. One year he was out with a devestating injury. Last year, he was coming back from said injury.

They only need for the signing bonus of the later round picks. Also, they only need to keep about 3.75 million free for the draft picks. Most of that (about 3 million) going to the 1st rounder, should they keep the 7th over-all, which isn't likely.

My guess is that they signed him to a vet minimum deal with incentives.

He was free. I specifically remember him being mentioned as an option for the Patriots on several occasions after injuries in the secondary, yet they never even brought him in for a look-see; guys like Hank Poteat and Artrell Hawkins were signed instead.
