You know what's nuts? The only SB era HoF QB who wasn't picked 1st overall but ended up starting right off the bat was Jim Kelly (who finished 4-12 that year). There were those like Marino who didn't start until week 6.

I'm all for having the highly picked rook sit for a pinch before getting the starting nod... probably not an entire year, though... unless Bris or Zap light it up by some miracle.

Correction: Jim Kelly most certainly did not start right off the bat in the NFL out of college.

Fwiw, since 2019 (when his qb rating jumped from 82ish to 88ish) brissett is 10-1 when his defense gives up under 23 pts.

Last year our qbs were 2-6 in that situation.

Brissett will provide the best mentorship for the young guys if he works hard to win the starting job. It is not a stretch to think that his NFL experience would offset his lack of physical talent. Even if he loses out to Maye, he will have demonstrated what it means to prepare as a pro.

He knows why he was hired, he knew they would be drafting a QB.

Nobody including the current coaching staff knows when Maye will be ready to start, it could be week one, week eight... it could be next year. The definition of the job is in the term "bridge QB."

Brissett is the starter until someone plays well enough to beat him out... this isn't hard.

I think he'll be the best choice to keep game 1 at Cincinatti under control, and also the best choice to get us our first win vs Seattle in game 2. He'll also be the best choice for games 3 & 4 (at Jets and at SF), as Maye would not be ready for those defenses that soon.

I could see a transition to Maye for G5 vs Miami.
