Your right on that Ross, as Jonathan Jones said many of the veterans felt like they never had a coaching advantage when it came to game planning. Boy I'm glad that's over!! I guess everyone would be on a clean slate like Vrabel said.
Yeah for sure. I can certainly see Godchaux sticking around but more as a rotational/situation piece and not necessarily a key guy. And his money doesn't align with that, which is part of the reason I could see a trade.

I also don't really think his pro-Mayo comments all year were really a big deal. I always got the impression that he was doing that because he got his extension he wanted in the summer, so he felt obligated to go to bat for those guys in return. He never said anything as egregious as Tavai.

Yes, It's funny becuase Tavai had been a good solider since he been in NE. He even got better as a player and ended up being a key player. Godchaux and Mayo are very close so I can understand him speaking up for him.. also he's a tram leader so that also has alot to do with it. I commend him on getting paid.. he has the best in the business Rosenhaus as and agent.

Fine signing for what it is. Hopefully he's 4th DT on the depth chart (or even 5th) by the end of that 2 year deal. And functionally that means 5th or 6th on the depth chart because hopefully they get better edge players so White can play inside more too.

Pats Pharms system

Since he got here, he has played roughly 60% of the defensive snaps, which makes sense to some extent if you figure 2 out of 3 downs could be considered "running downs" on average. My issue with Godchaux is that other guys who make the same amount per year on average at least offer something as far as TFL or pressure in the passing game. Without getting into schemes and X's and O's and all that (which I acknowledge are probably some part of the difference), guys in the same salary ballpark like BJ Hill, Larry Ogunjobi, Daquan Jones, Harrison Phillips, A'Shawn Robinson, and Javon Kinlaw are all interior linemen and all at least have a few sacks and TFL. The last 2 years, Godchaux has had no sacks, 2 QB hits, and only 3 tackles for a loss. If the run defense was good, we could at least hang our hat as far as Godchaux goes, but for him to be this one-dimensional and the team to struggle against the run, I can't imagine there is a big difference between him and some late-round space-eater interior guys for way cheaper.
Larry Ogunjobi is probably the most comparable player because he plays a similar role for the Steelers. When you think of the Steelers D you don’t think about Larry, but he allows others to shine.

I’m not going to sit here and die on the Godchaux hill, frankly he’s on the wrong side of 30 and was never anything more than a high motor DT who played a lot of snaps and tackled well. He’ll be gone soon. But a large part of the Patriots defensive decline last year was coaching and scheme.

I have DT as one of the major offseason needs in 2025, this has to do with Barmore’s health as well as the age and talent around him. They need an infusion of talent there regardless of Barmore.

Wozzy agree 100%. Is why I'm thinking Godchaux is likely going to be traded or cut. He got his contract front loaded with guaranteed money last off season so that the team likely can get off his contract if they so choose.. he's a one trick pony and really hadn't been all that good at the 1 trick lately. I believe we should be looking at guys like BJ hill in FA who provide some pass rush ability and is stout as a run player. I'm totally on board with the teams approach to solidify the trenches.

Traded maybe, but cutting him this year would be just as expensive as keeping him. I don’t see that happening.

I agree they should upgrade their lines significantly, the Super Bowl was a great example of why line play is crucial. Spend there in free agency, draft there with high picks.

I think BJ Hill and Milton Williams should both get signed. They can’t assume Barmore will be healthy. If he does get healthy that is one nasty rotation with Keion White and Wise.

True. Milton William is another guy we should look at.. we need to win the in the trenches.. for large parts of the game it reminded me of the giants pass rush in the 08 superbowl.. and we had a stout OL. When you can win rushing 4 that shows the Dominant play of interior DL.

Barmore came back prematurely and hence is why he likely had a setback. I hope he can get completely healthy to regain his form and be able to live his life. I like white as in interior rusher and wise as a sub rusher.

On the team leader piece, that is something I think should be a top priority for Vrabel. One of them is likely gone in Brissett. Andrews seems like he is 50/50 to retire. Peppers lost his captainship after the arrest. Wise is set to be a free agent, and if Bentley is determined not to be a fit, he could be cut because there is no guaranteed money. That leaves us with Joe Cardona. Which, let’s face it, he is a long snapper, and the fill-in Dugger, who had a down year. That leaves us with Maye, who likely (I hope) will be a team captain, but we honestly will need a newcomer to fill that leadership role right off the bat, like Rodney Harrison. Ideally, a defensive tone setter who has worked with Vrabel or our new DC in the past and can instill the message.

I feel we are going to be big on Josh sweat and Zach Baun.

We need some impact DTs upfront for those guys to be impactful if they were to sign here.. Carter and Williams are disruptive up front for Philly.

Osa odighuzhawa from Dallas is going to sign here

I agree that a big part of how the defensive line performs next year is tied to the health of Barmore. If he is healthy and can build on what he did in 2023 then I think we get into the rising tide lifts all ships territory with the front 7. On the Patriots Unfiltered podcast they have said a couple times this draft is thought to be pretty deep when it comes to interior D-line so who knows what happens this summer with Godchaux.

I like Josh Sweat as a tier two type pass rusher but unless some other guys are added in the front seven I think he could be a disappointment. That is what worries me about him and especially Zach Baun in particular. Are those guys succeeding because they talented in their own right or are they succeeding because of the talent on that defensive line?

Buyer beware on these players. They are eerily similar to the early 2010's Ravens that got big deals such as Paul Kruger, Cary Williams and Dannelle Ellerbe. All awful after they left the Ravens.
