Player Signing Pats sign CB Terrance Mitchell

I don't see a consensus. I see people saying that if we trade Agholor away to use his money to sign Allen Robinson it's worth it. Otherwise, we trade him away and then do what? No other WR to replace him?
The point is nobody is impressed with Agholor's production and he'll cost $15M on this year's cap unless he's extended, cut ($10M), or traded ($5M). If Agholor's contract was so great why would we be considering doing anything with it at this time? The talk last offseason to justify his contract was he could be easily cut this year. So, if we cut or trade him after a year, was his contract a succesful one?

I mean, that's the draft so... what are we talking about again?
So you agree that all the holes mentioned will not be addressed for this year? Since you and i agree that the draft its crapshot

Which makes me at least somewhat worried, since we will have a sophomore QB on a faulty team

I expected more of FA. Letting one of our best players go for peanuts is really the weight of the scale so far

The only people saying he could easily be cut in year 2 never looked at the contract. The Pats did with Agholor what so many "cap-is-crap" guys here are screaming for them to do right now to buy a shiny: the kept his first year cost low, and on a 2-year deal, it means his second year is expensive.

This isn't really rocket-science.

I see this guy as strengthening the weakest link. Myles Bryant got positively abused by Josh Allen. This guy can presumably strengthen us there.
We have two corner positions set with Mills and Jones: CB2 and NB.
Mitchell will compete for reps with TBD free agents, a top draftee, Williams, Bryant and Wade

For me, we have upgraded our #3, #4 and #5 CB's by having Jones back and adding Mitchell. Jones is instantly our starting nickel back.
2022: Jones, Mitchell and one of Williams, Bryant and Wade [obviously Mitchell could be beaten out for a roster spot].

We have no #1 CB. However, it's early. The 5 months of free agency won't even officially start for more than 3 hours.

more zone coverage? i think I have to vomit! again bend and break D# all over with (yet) less talent on the team

I hope, for god's sake, BB hits a homerun with the draft
It's been 22 years of this defense. Honestly, let's get used to it.

OK, you are disappointed in the results of free agency before the five months of free agency even begins

Sure but the question back then was if paying $11M/yr for a guy that made $1M the previous year was an over pay. It was poo poo'd as over reacting and unwarranted criticism.

I laid it all out for you before. Receivers like him are getting a lot more money in the market right now. heck receivers worse than him.

If you cut him, you're bringing no one in for similar money.

Unless your plan is to trade him and use the savings on someone like Allen Robinson. That's a totally different story.

But it doesn't change the fact that the first 6 WRs to sign this offseason are either at Agholor's range or well well above in the case of Williams and Kirk.

Heck, Zay Jones just got $20m guaranteed.

Do I think the Patriots will fill all the holes on the roster through the draft? Or FA? I don't know if any team fills all the holes. I do expect they'll find 3 players in the draft even with 8 or 9 picks, at least 3, but then a few more FAs. No one fills all the holes.

Look at every WR in his statistical category or above who came out last year. Of them all, the fan base that had the least to complain about was probably New England's.

The Pats signed Agholor before they drafted Jones. Since they clearly reined in Jones last year, Agholor's skill set didn't match very well last year. I saw several big play opportunities with him ignored last year - either Jones wasn't seeing the field quickly enough and shortening his choices or was chcking down too soon from the deep end possibilities (their OL was a mess early, remember?).

Whatever the case, the idea that Agholor is way overpaid is nonsense - he's not even paid as much as a typical #2 (not counting rookie deals) at this point. Anyone thinking he was coming in here to be a #1WR either never bothered to look at what #1WRs were getting paid. You've got to throw the ball at WRs to get value, and as is typical for a Josh McDaniel's offense, the Pats spread it around. The only guy on the team to get 100 targets, never mind 100 catches, was Meyers. Nobody else broke 75, so how are you expecting 1,000-yard receivers who don't get 75 targets?

And comparing a prove-it deal to the following contract kind of shows an ignorance about what a prove-it deal is all about.

I'd say that he would compete with Mills if the season started yoday. Jones is a slot corner
That's kind of evading the question.
And Jones is a lot more versatile than Mitchell which makes him more valuable not just because of his versatility but he's just a better DB imo. I think Mitchell only played one side of the field as well. We'll see but I don't think he's a challenger for CB1 just because the FA period has only just begun and there are plenty of CB's in the draft. BB will not go without addressing this need.

Zone matched with a pass rush is good
yes thats actually a problem unless you have really good pass rushers (not only one) and IDL that can hold the ground against run, so still quite some work to get the right (more) talent on the team, bc currently they still lack it on both sides of the ball

Look, I'm on record for saying we spent enough on the offensive side of the ball and aside from OL we should focus on D this season in both FAcy and the draft.

I feel that w/ a 2nd year the new guys (Mac, Henry, Smith, Bourne, Agholor) should improve. Harry needs to go. Of course that was before we traded Mason away. Now all of a sudden the OL may be top priority.

Given all of that, I would have no issue trading Agholor/Harry if we can land a true WR#1 like Robinson.

I feel like we are going to see 2 or 3 other cheap veteran Mitchell types signed along with a premium draft pick and they'll let it all shake out in camp. I don't see a proper free agency investment at CB. But I could be wrong...

This approach seems reasonable, and very like Belichick.

My thought is that there are no "premium" draft picks after about Pick 20, although 1-3 of the blue chip players do seem to be available late in the first round. So, I'm all on board with the strategy that you mention, with the understand that we are very likely to draft a CB in the first round (and yes, it could mean a trade up, pr even down).

Career 55.6% comp pct. 88.1 rating. Been a serviceable outside CB. Good depth & an upgrade over CB4.

He’ll probably compete with a rookie for snaps. Hopefully they add another CB in FA too.
His last two years have sucked. 13 missed tackles. 11 TD allowed. Opposing QB rating of over 100. This was on 175 targets where he allowed 103 receptions. He only had 1 interception, though he had 23 PDs..
