Pats Release Ryan Allen - Jake Bailey is the new punter

not surprising, BB does not usually hold onto punters for long. This young kid must be something special since they invested a 5th rounder on him.

FWIW the 5th round is pretty standard for specialists. While Allen was a UDFA, Mesko and Cardona were drafted in the 5th, Gostkowski in the 4th.

I am pretty surprised Ghost has not faced a competition since his with martin gramatica in 06.

This was interesting from the moment they drafted Bailey. I wonder what they thought Allen lost last year.
he didn't lose anything. He just doesn't have the leg Bailey has.

Which names / older players do you expect ?

well any competition that's between a 3+ year vet vs a 1-2yr youngster that are relatively close so far in preseason and camp

ie i think its possible folks like phillip, jason, chung, burk, harris, roberts, pennel dont make it

and i think only reason Hoyer will make it is because our D is shaping up to be so nasty, that it would be possible for an average QB to win the champ with them

This seems relevant to this thread. What do we make of this news ... might be a tad cynical but perhaps we're feeling a bit less certain about Bailey at the moment?

Patriots wanted new Giants punter Johnny Townsend | Here is what they did instead
Maybe Bailey didn’t win the punting job as much as Allen lost it (at his price). And that he wants a decent cheap guy on hand in case Bailey starts shanking it the last 2 weeks.

In 20o7 the Pats had a competition between veteran Josh Miller and rookie Danny Baugher. Miller was cut around this time, leading people to think Baugher won. But at cutdown the Pats cut Baugher too, and wound up picking up Chris Hansen to punt after he was cut by the Saints.

The writing was on the wall when they traded up for Bailey. He was great while he was here and was a huge part of the last Super Bowl win. He’ll catch on somewhere. I wish him the best (unless he joins a team I loathe :D)!

Good read before Super performance.
Amazing how prescient that story turned out to be. A punter DID come close to winning the MVP (or at least get some consideration. ;) )

I'm sure I'm not alone in remembering when Bill replaced Zoltan Mesko with Ryan. You'd have thought that he'd traded Brady...;). OK, maybe some slight hyperbole there, but the point remains the same...
I don't remember many people here feeling that way, at all. In fact, by 2013 some of us were already lamenting that Bill had wasted the 150th overall pick on a specialist who sucked at that point, eerily similar to the lousy long snapper from the previous year's draft. Then throughout TC & pre-season, it became obvious that the Zoltan - as well as he can do some things like speak several languages and study economics - was simply not as good an NFL punter as the 2X Ray Guy award winner, UDFA Ryan Allen. The choice was obvious.

From Superbowl MVP consideration to the unemployment line. What a world. But not to worry, come 9/1 Allen will likely be on an NFL roster, just not for the same money that he got here.

Blame Bill the coach. What other HC in the NFL can talk poetic about an OPPOSING punter like Bill does so often. He clearly has a Hecker obsession. And when he thought he had a chance to get one, he trade up to pick a guy they thought COULD be the next Johnny Hekker. Only time will tell if he can produce under pressure, but as of now the talent is undeniable.

Younger, more talented, cheaper. That was a hard combination for Allen to overcome.

But just one point. Based on what I've seen at TC and in the first game, Allen's KO's aren't nearly as good as Goskowski's. His are going to be returned most of the time. I think too much is made of his ability to KO. But as an emergency guy in both KO's and FG's, he'll be better than other team's #2

And then Hansen would move on to doing those Dateline to catch a predator series.

What is it with the posters here and the kicker position? Have you lost all understanding when it comes to that position?

Justin Tucker is almost universally considered the best kicker in the game. Let's look at his numbers over the last 2 seasons, compared to Gost, using Pro-Football-Reference for the data:

20-29: Tucker is 19 for 19, Gost is 27 for 27
30-39: Tucker is 20 for 20, Gost is 19 for 19
40-49: Tucker is 20 for 23, Gost is 12 for 17
50+: Tucker is 10 for 14, Gost is 6 for 9

So:

They're essentially the same from inside 40 yards, with both hitting 100% of those field goals.
From 40-49 yards, Tucker kicked 87%, while Gost kicked 71%
From 50+, they're basically the same, with Tucker hitting 71% and Gost hitting 67%

In other words, for all that this board occasionally gets to stupidly attacking Gost, we're looking at difference between Gost and the NFL's #1 kicker being a matter of only about 2-3 FG makes over the course of 2 seasons.

And, as for the XPs, Tucker is 75 of 76 while Gost is 94 of 97, which, again, is about 2 makes over the course of 2 seasons, with each kicker missing only one PAT last year.
These are the ones that stick out to fans... and understandably so:

Missed XP against Denver in AFCCG.
Missed XP against Atlanta in Super Bowl.
Miss against Philly in Super Bowl.
Miss against Rams in Super Bowl.

Two good kids playing for the same job.
The younger stronger man won.
I wonder if he eats tuna fish?
