For anyone with any doubts as to how good Bailey is:

(click on the people are talking about this link, he's posted multiple punts of varying style that Bailey hit in College)

This seems relevant to this thread. What do we make of this news ... might be a tad cynical but perhaps we're feeling a bit less certain about Bailey at the moment?

Patriots wanted new Giants punter Johnny Townsend | Here is what they did instead

Former Oakland Raiders punter Johnny Townsend was awarded to the Giants off waivers last week.

It turns out the Patriots also put in a waivers claim for Townsend, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The Giants have a higher waiver priority based on last season’s records.

Townsend, 24, averaged 38.3 net yards with 17 dropped inside the 20-yard line on 70 punts last season for the Raiders.

Seemed like allen took a step back last year, but was outstanding in the super bowl. Bailey looks like the real deal so not shocked by this. Reminds me of allen taking over for mesko who i was also a fan of

Maybe not so much what Allen lost then a rook with a higher upside at a lower price.

Completely agree...and also applies to other positions as well...obviously. Not to take anything away from this Allen / Bailey thread...but Burkhead and D. Harris...."similar" boat.

I do appreciate that when BB makes his mind up on a veteran, he releases them early and gives them a chance to hook up with a team before the avalanche of releases on cut down day.

Amazing...Bailey’s plant foot never leaves the ground.

Yup. You can tell when he really likes a guy he doesn't wait.. I think he really likes Allen, along with Etling. Etling had no chance of making it this year and BB knew it early on.

3x Super Bowl Champion. 'Nuff said.

This move was out of respect

Best wishes on wherever life leads him.

Positional upgrade, cap savings, and a clear locker room message....no sacred cows.... every day is a fight for your future

It's a tough business but BB doesn't sit back and shine his rings.

I expect more "names" to sent on their way.

Is it true Ryan Allen has the most SB rings for a punter in NFL history? I coulda sworn I heard that somewhere. Good luck to him, we won’t soon forget him.

Ray Guy has 3.

So the answer still might be yes.

So bb may have decided this is the year we’re going young for some reason

I expect now a bit of a tip in any camp battle to favor the younger player

What other older players do you see going?

Great move. Allen is a fan favorite because he had a good super bowl pinning the rams inside the 10..but some people forget his years of short punts, low hang times, and if we were pinned deep in our own territory on 4th down, he didn’t have the game breaking leg that bailey has to completely bomb one and change the field position

Bailey has pro bowl talent and a very high ceiling that Allen didn’t come close too

Edit: Wrong thread.

Isn't the locker room message of releasing him now not later a gesture of respect to a longtime team member? There's always an early veteran cut or two, designed to do right by a player who has done right by you and give him the best possible chance to find a new job.

not surprising, BB does not usually hold onto punters for long. This young kid must be something special since they invested a 5th rounder on him.

im expecting a down year for ghost then. he does not do well with new holders.
