I disagree. You cant trade for what the player will do. You give the asking price or dont. Given the roster, the need and the asking price, as well as the most reasonable expectation of what Burgess would play like, it was a reasonable decision. The fact that his skills had and were continuing to deteriorate is an unfortunate result. He was brought in ONLY to be a pass rusher in sub packages. He did that for one year, and was cut the following year. Had he played at the expected level, he would have filled a very necessary need last year, and this year as well.
The trade did not work out, but as I said before at the time of the trade it was justified, and a reasonable trade. In terms of seeing into the future it was awful.
I disagree. it was an OK trade. He played. The Pats had a surfeit of high draft picks that were not touched.
They have about five premium draft needs to finish both the defensive and offensive re-building. DE, OLB, OT, OL, and RB. They have five premium draft picks in 2011. 2x1s, 2x2s and at least a 1x3s. But possibly more by 3s. Watson got a $6.5 million SB when he signed as a FA. That is 3rd round compensation territory. Mankins if he were to go, would too. So what are you going to do with the balance of your picks?
i grow very weary of these "pseudo-fans" who think that it is a personal affront to them, that Belichick has not instantly rebuilt the team with some 6 and 7 round pro bowlers.
The SB team got old and a lot of great players got hurt, retired or needed to. McG, Bruschi, Harrison, Colvin, Vrabel, Seymour to name a few.
And Belichick still turned in a 10-6 double digit Division champion. He has added CBs, SILBs, an OLB, future LOT, 2 WRs, a couple of TEs, 2S, and a DE, all of whom will star and play in this League. Maybe he has found o rcan develop a couple of next generation reserve OLs that Dante can groom.
Putting the best late roundewrs or UDFAs on the PS in their second year, seems like on-schedule development to me.
Belichicik has done all this in a mere two seasons, since "The Last Hurrah" that went 18-1 and a 38 seconds from undefeated.
Get Off his rump. If you nothing to say, Say Nothing!!
