Pats offensive line ranked 9th

PFF simply has this one wrong. Claiming "4 of the top 60 run blocking grades are on the Patriots. One of only 11 teams".

The Pats RBs average 3.3 Michel, 4.3 Burkhead, 2.9 White, 3.6 Bolden, 3.0 Harris. The only RB who has had success behind this line is Burkhead and with a very low sample size of 27 runs and a lot of that came when Wynn was healthy. Also this isn't even counting the Develin goal line runs which would lower it even more. (2 for 3 yards)

Average it all out and that is 208 rushes for 705 yards from our RBs. That averages out to 3.4 YPA. That is REALLY bad. Maybe some of that can be blamed on the TEs not being great run blockers and not having a full but back lets be honest. Most teams don't have a true full back and really good blocking TEs are getting harder to come by these days.

To say a line that averages 3.4 YPA has good run blocking from it's backs is just not true. And that is being generous give them a 3.4 as their overall average is lower at 3.2 which ties the lowest YPA with the Jets, Bengals and barely above the Dolphins.

To claim this line has run blocked well is just not true. They are among the worst. As far as pass blocking they have been okay in large part due to always being in the right spot and no rushers coming free due to coaching and Brady.

I totally agree that this ranking is insane. Newhouse alone would make them no better than average. Brady makes their pass blocking appear to be adequate, but they are not good. Luckily/hopefully one player can make a dramatic difference and hoping Wynn does that.

How much is Sony to blame?
he's not a good back. Looking around the NFL, a RB either needs great speed to burst through the hole or great strength to break tackles. Sony has neither..he's just a JAG.

Scar himself said they aren't playing well.

But i would imagine if Scar was doing an AMA here and said they weren't playing well you'd have posters here argue with him and call him a chicken little.

joker would have a seizure and tell him to go coach for another team if he doesn’t like

When he is getting stuffed 3 yards in the backfield... I am going to blame the OL.

Yes, how many runs have we seen where Michel has 2-3 defensive players in his face before even getting to the LOS?

A lot of that has to do with Brady. Not only does he move well in the pocket, but he's also outstanding at communicating with his offensive line before the snap to adjust the pass protection.

WATCH: Dolphins frustration with Patriots QB Tom Brady caught on tape

I loved seeing this defensive line coach's frustration.

“Look how they slid, picked that s— up. He’s called the right protection every f—ing time.”

There he is! Matt Moore! Adam Gase!

PFF once again showing why they're PFF.

It's part of the puzzle. We have no fullback and no decent blocking TEs (though Watson offers some hope), and those positions have been critical in the recent past, both for our running game and for pass protection. Since no decent fullback or blocking tight end figures to walk through that door anytime soon, the line needs to be "great" to get results that approach "good". Need Wynn dominating to get there, and Shaq at 100%, IMO.

This is a great point. The success of the run game last year for example was predicated largely on having a really good OL, the best blocking TE in history, and a tremendous fullback, all operating together. Of those seven players (Brown, Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Cannon, Gronk, Develin), the Pats are without four of them this year (Brown, Andrews, Gronk, Develin). Their replacements haven't been anywhere close to as good. That's going to have an impact on the run blocking for sure.

Ivan says he needs to run downhill more, quit taking risks bouncing it outside and break more tackles.

Read into that what you want.
Nothing really to read into it. It’s Ivan saying he needs to start running like a man and not a better version of Maroney.

If Tom Brady wasn't the greatest QB to ever play, this offensive line would rank in the bottom half of the league. He is able to move guys around to give them the best chance of success on most plays. He also gets rid of the ball very quickly which cuts down on sacks and allows the team to have a chance at a positive play.

The OL isn't up to par.....

BUT I am not surprised that it ranks 9th...there are many many bad offensive lines in the NFL. Just look at the OL's we have feasted on in the first 8 weeks....

So team will be facing #2, #4, & #5 OL in the next 3 games and highest in the 1st 8 games was #10 (Pit) and #15 (Wash). It'll be interesting to see what adjustments if any are made to the D front. Washington ran pretty decent as did Cleveland with the #22 OL.

Seems smart thing would be to attack this D via the run. Can't wait to see what BB has up his sleeve who spent all day on Trade Tuesday on the Ravens. :)

Am I to take this to mean that Sony Michel is more of a problem than the actual offensive line? I still think both have responsibility for his putrid numbers and effectiveness. This ranking list seems flawed.

Brady's quick release and his ability to see the breakdown and throw the ball away has much to do with the line rated as 9th. Most of the RB's are hit in the back field some of the runs look like a good gain until you notice they were pushed back 4 yards and it was fight to get back to the los.

Football Outsiders OL stats are a lot more useful than PFF's subjectivity. They have the line #9 in Adjusted Sack Rate, but we all know a lot of that is due to Brady.

Their Adjusted Line Yards is at 18th in the league, Power Success at 24th, and Stuffed Rate at 31st. Pretty bad. Not that Sony or the other backs are doing well on their own, Open Field rank is 30th. Second Level rank (5-10 yards) is 18th. Running Back Yards are 29th ranked.

This matches what I've observed, the run blocking is poor this year. As for Sony, he's a good slasher but he has no elusiveness in the open field. Chubb in comparison is playing with the 12th ranked Adjusted Line Yards OL, but Cleveland is 3rd ranked in 2nd Level Yards, 2nd in Open Field rank, and 1st in Running Back Yards.
