Came here to post the Sharp article. Saw it posted already. Leaving satisfied.

I wish I could just sit at home all day and study it all. Fascinating..

Focus on a group. Like the S's. It usually all starts there one way or another.

Study them or any position and work your way around.

Nothing better than see a pocket collapse from all sides. Both DE's get low & underneath their man & just bull them back while Butler comes up through the middle.

That's one hell of a 3 man rush. Looked like a delayed screen to Henry, but read beautifully by KVM and M.Flowers to give Mariota nowhere to go and let the DL squash him.

Chris

This is easily the best pre-game thread I've gone through. Outstanding stuff by Schofield and Light on the cover 3 beaters. Many outstanding posts in this thread.

Key is to remember outsides are matchup based, but on the inside, backers hover and the robber just sits in zone which is a big mistake against Brady. If that happens, he will pick them apart.

But- if the Jags are not stupid, they will have self-scouted that trait and made some adjustments. I am thinking that the robber will spy Brady and rush him if he has too much time in the pocket.

Again, as I've said, Jags are talented but young and dumb. They bite hard on PA and misdirection, so as has been written, expect a lot of 21 personnel and more than your usual dose of PA which is sexy to the average fan.

Wanted to share this excellent breakdown by SO on why it's so hard to keep up with the Patriots because of all the subtle adjustments they do (and the ruthless self-scouting they do to eliminate tendency), and I think that is what will ultimately do in the Jags, as with this play where they put a fresh twist on RB reload to ID coverage:

Interesting words by the Jags' DC. I don't know it he's telling the truth, or not, and it sounds as if he's setting it up to be a misdirection. But, if he is telling the truth, we can chalk this up as a huge advantage for the Patriots, because we know what the Patriots tend to be able to do against stubborn, system-bound, opponents:

6.#Jaguars DC Todd Wash on CB Jalen Ramsey possibly covering Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski Sunday: “In a basketball game, I think we would. But Jalen is a corner and we’re going to run our system..."

#Jaguars DC Todd Wash on CB Jalen Ramsey possibly covering Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski Sunday: “I think the last thing you can do is to go into a game like this and you try and reinvent the wheel. … Jalen is a good corner and he plays against wide receivers….”

I think it's gamesmanship. Wash doesn't seem like a complete idiot. They also used corners to cover the likes of Graham when they played the Seahawks.

Then we'll align Gronk in true TE, pull Ramsey into the box and run right at him. Lose-lose proposition either way.

I think we're going to see a lot of the run early on if only to soften them up. But that said, Ramsey is a very capable, and willing, tackler. I think if I'm the Jags, I would rather the Patriots increase their rushing attempts to target Ramsey (on Gronk) and the smaller backers than get killed with the Brady to Gronk combo. That said, the Patriots actually have the personnel to run the ball on the Jags and be successful at it while the Seahawks did not.

Good post and I agree. I think analysts and people only see athleticism and speed, etc, and just claim that means the player is all-world. It's like Ryan Shazier. A great athlete, fast, etc, workout warrior, etc, but he was always hurt and isn't a cerebral player at all.

Pats/McDaniels/Brady need to be smart about this and use it to their advantage, but I agree their Run D is overrated and play-action should be in play here at some point, hopefully by the 2nd qtr.

On D, Pats just need to not get caught in the run game/playaction thingy Bortles likes to do. In a nutshell, he's Flacco and this is the Baltimore offense. Mediocre receivers, a good TE, good backs, a deep dropping playaction QB that does not like to play from behind.

His passer rating is 66 when trailing.

Win the toss, have a nice scripted opening drive, try to get 7 out of it, and go from there.

Damn. And, I remember thinking this during the game, but Trey Flowers is strong (and fast) and plays with such good leverage, doesn't he?

If he could somehow be a player in space, wow, what a beast he'd be. He's already morphing into a very good player as it is.

Gee, Leonard Williams, #6 overall by the Jets, or 4th rder, Trey Flowers?

Not even a question.

Just saw this thanks for sharing and the nice words!

Great way to i.d. & fool coverage! Faster pace by White was key as the defense thinks Brady's "only" trying to break the coverage.

I also think this was a pretty informative thread. Tons of great info about Jax in here brought by several different posters.

Football isn't that different from a fight. You're consistently setting up your opponents for future moves.

Don't get too caught up in the terms and ignore the obvious.

Especially with Brady's thumb issue, I'm looking for a Patriots offensive game plan that's 2TE and 2RB heavy.

I think the game plan would have been a heavy reliance on 22 personnel regardless. The thumb injury might make that more of a necessity than a luxury.

Exactly. And, if I'm a certain former Buffalo Bills linebacker, I'm eating light this week, and hoping to increase my quickness a bit, because I'm expecting to get run all over the field trying to cover RBs out of heavy sets.

I've been waiting for more 2 RB sets since the off-season so I'm pumped.

Would love to see these backs with a healthy Gronk & Marty.

Every time Pos is on the field I expect we try to exploit him in some way. He's not cut out for this game.

If Burkhead is healthy enough, we could see a fair amount of

Gronk/Allen/Cooks/Hogan/Lewis
Gronk/Devlin/Cooks/Hogan/Lewis
Gronk/Devlin/Cooks/Hogan/White
Gronk/Burkhead/Cooks/Hogan/Lewis
Gronk/Burkhead/Cooks/Hogan/White

Those should lead to a Patriots advantage against the LBs. I'd love to see

Gronk/Allen/Hogan/Lewis/White

but I'm not sure McDaniels is going to go with that, given that I haven't seen enough of it (in other words, I've wanted to see more of it) during the course of the season.

I read somewhere that the jags deploy bouye on TE's, did it vs graham this yr too.
