Pats defense learning quickly under Brian Flores

Every year, we talk about a fast aggressive defense but end up with something different. I expect the same basic defense as last year.

It's difficult for any defense to play fast and aggressive if the players are even the least little bit uncertain about what their reads/assignments/adjustments are in a specific situation or on a specific play. One guy hesitating can kill it.

If Flores has simplified some play calls, or even if he's merely more effective at explaining the required reads, etc., to the degree that everyone is catching on quicker and becoming more confident and correct about what they're supposed to do, we could see a much faster, more effective, more aggressive-looking defense, even if nothing at all has changed in terms of concept or structure.

There was similar chatter in the 2001 TC after RAC joined the staff. Some may remember BB was the DC in 2000. Players such as Willie, Ty, Bru stated openly how RAC's simplified approach and ability to translate Bill's scheme accelerated their play on the field.

That season had a nice ending to it. Lets hope for the same result.

I’m looking forward to a defense that doesn’t look like they’re playing on ice skates.

I will Strongly consider taking the pats d in Fantasy, both because I think they will rebound from last year and they get 6 games against the afc east

The difference between the #1 fantasy D and the #12 D is like 3-4 points a week.

For that reason, I always take the Pats D. No matter how bad they play.

A pick six on Sunday gives me a double bonus. Love it baby!

There usually pretty good about always staying in the positive in terms of points. So if the rest of your team is sound you stand a good chance.

It wasn't a "communication" issue last season, it was a "talent" issue...same as this season.

Meet the new boss...same as the old boss.

I can't wait until the early season games when folks here freak out and abandon all hope as the D as usual starts out grinding on some gears. Gotta admit that I was wicked pissed myself at Gilmore in the home game loss the Panthiz.

There is something to be said for the Dunning-Kruger effect.. Patricia was a mad genius, and sometimes mad geniuses can forget that not everyone around them is also a mad genius

If you over complicate something to the point where its hard for people to fully grasp and master, then it can translate onto the field of players being a step too slow because they're thinking about the play that was called, what their assignment is, where they need to line up, etc, etc... and when you're thinking too much, you'll have a slower reaction time and be a step late rather than just being able to understand all of that subconsciously and react to what is happening in front of you with conviction.

Patriots offense is the same way.. lots of talented players that couldn't cut it here because of the mental aspect of the offense. Where is that line between over complicating and dumbing it down too much? Well, I guess that's why those guys get paid millions of dollars to do what they do lol

Granted, this is only day 2 of camp... maybe they just figured out a good way to incrementally implement the various concepts of their defensive philosophy this year

At any rate it's really nice to hear feedback from the players, especially team captains like Hightower, that they like the defensive approach and are finding it easier to understand and work cohesively as a unit so far.. hope it continues!

So ****ing pumped that actual FOOTBALL is back and we can leave all the soap opera offseason ******** in the dumpster where it belongs!!!

"Unknown" to us, maybe. This is Flores' 15th season with the Pats and his 11th season as a coach with the Pats.

Relatively unknown as most position coaches take a back seat to the Coordinators in this system, he also is not known how he will conduct himself as a coordinator..

Flores is a relative unknown, but got me to thinking he might be better than we know as there were several teams that wanted to interview him for their HC position last year.. either that or he was just another "token".

Maybe a BC grad from Brooklyn, can communicate more effectively than a RPI grad.. but then that is an assumption that the RPI had communication issues.
Brownsville, Brooklyn at that! If you know, you know

Agree with the second part. My point was that Flores has been coaching the Pats system and schemes for a decade, collaborating with the other coaches and coordinators. Though Flores' coaching style may differ from Patricia's, I don't expect any radical departures in schemes. There's a lot more "known" than "unknown".

There was an excellent article early this off-season detailing the Pats' game-planning approach and routines for both offense and defense. The upshot was that the position coaches are much closer to being the coordinator's peers than underlings, and that game planning comes as much from them as from the coordinator. If you mean "back seat" in terms of media exposure, I'll agree with that. But if you mean it in terms of hierarchy, top-down-driven, I really don't think so.

This is a great read. Seems that defensive players are enjoying this new defense that Flores brought in. Expect the defense to be more aggressive.

With everyone being so down on this group after the way the SB when down I really think they're going to be much better than people realize. Obviously injuries can change that but if they avoid any catastrophic losses on D this defensive group is going to be quite good.

The biggest issue with our D last year was Injuries and Disiplince. Loosing Hightower was like loosing Brady.

We also gave up far to many chunk plays as well as not being great against the run which never helps, we also had even by our standard a sub par pass rush

We had no rotational pass rush, which didn’t help at all and we were poor at stopping the run as Branch had a huge drop off.

We’ve brought in Clayborn which will help, as well getting back rivers and HT instantly our D is better with HT and Clayborn.

We’ve brought in Danny Shelton which will help against the run, another thing is that Valentine hopefully will be back as he was formidable against the run especially in the AFC championship 2016 against the steelers!

This D will be better than last years I feel by a considerable margin.

When one hits rock bottom, one has nowhere to go but up.

They’ll need to be. In their games against playoff squads, the defense gave up: 42, 20, 33, 7, 3, 24, and 16. The 16 and 3 point outputs were by the Bills. The Pats defense feasted on weaker competition, hence their FIF IN POINTZ finish.
