I think it's too early for that. I'm hopeful that he'll do well and they can work something out, but no one is paying Jonathan Cooper $11 million next year based on past performance.

They can still do a new deal before he becomes a free agent next year. This means nothing except that, short of a new deal, he'll be a FA next year. But it doesn't prohibit a new deal.

Are they worried he could get hurt and knowing there's almost noway he's worth that much that they don't want to chance something major happening to him?

Why in the world would they pick it up? That's a chunk of change for ANY guard. Even if Cooper lives up to his expectations this year, are you paying him 11m next year??????

Means nothing. Let's see what he can do. Let him win the starting LG job here and make Scar go wow, then lock him down for three or four years with an honest contract.

I'm pretty sure if an injury-prone, struggling guard got hurt and paid $11M by the Patriots, Logan Mankins would destroy Patriot Place and Gillette with an axe.

This means very little. Teams structure the rookie option year with the big money as a way to use it as retainer of sorts to string it out as a way to make sure they want to extend the player into their 2nd deal.

This is a prove it deal for Cooper, and if Scar works his magic, the kid will earn it and then they;ll quietly talk extension, or let him go to FA, or he's done.

I wouldn't worry. BB has the leverage and either Scar is more of a legend and fixes this guy or Cooper is done in the NFL.

Again, it should be emphasized that there is a snowball's chance in hell he would have played up to the level of an $11M guard, just that the Pats tend to take their time in making these decisions. If Cooper has a crazy good year, the fifth year option would have been some leverage, but I guess they decided otherwise.

Reading Miguel's numbers, it seems that he has a $675 salary and a $1.7M bonus (due the 5th day of Training Camp), all guaranteed.

The Pats will be responsible for that bonus unless they trade him before the fifth day of training camp. There is offset language, so if they cut him and he signs with another team, then my understanding is that the Pats would get a cap credit (the full $675k if he's on another team's roster for all 17 weeks) in 2017 for the salary that he earns from another team in 2016.

They had to choose yesterday didn't they? I'm sure I read that it was the deadline. Certainly a number of other decisions were made about 5th year options yesterday.
