Pats D just did something the "No Fly Zone" hasn't done & "Legion of Boom" hasn't done in 3 years

The Pats' defense has given up 17 ppg or less for 5 games. I did a quick check to see when that had happened before in the Belichick era. Only three times previously and none in the last decade.
2001- weeks #12-17 and 3 playoff games- 9 games
2006- weeks #1-7- 7 games
2007- Weeks #1-5- 5 games
2017- weeks #5-10- 5 games* ( current)

17.9 would put them at #4 the way things stand now. That sounds spectacular to me.

It is. Might be too high. I dunna know. Before it's all said and done I do think they'll wind up in the top 8-10 in scoring defense.

That was the calling card of the 2001 champs. After losing to the rams to go 5-5 they rannthe table and never gave up more than 17.

Also it’s important to recognize allowing 17 or less is much harder today than it was before the polian rules.

This d deserves huge credit and if it keeps this up a place among the best defenses of the era despite its tough start.

I will add however that just as I said the first 4 were meaningless if they played well after, these 5 are meaningless if they don’t keep it up.

I care nothing about final rankings the only rankings icare about are how they will rank in games still to be played.

I was hoping to see some level of improvement by Thanksgiving or early December...looks like they arrived a little earlier than expected!

It's the same thing every year since we reloaded the defense in 2014. The defense never looks as dominating as the historic defenses the Broncos and the Seahawks had, but we will always be at least top 10 in some metric. This year we aren't there yet, but we are trending up and slowly getting there. Losing Hightower and McClellin for the season hurt a lot, but we still have good enough pieces to keep us in games.

Alan Branch and Pat Chung turnover dance.

"Worst defense in the league."

"Pats will be one and done with this atrocious defense that they're fielding."

Belichick making some people look like complete idiots once again.
What boggles my mind is that this happens almost every season. Lol

Well, literally nobody said that about the week 5-week 10 defense. In weeks 1-4, they were hands down the worst in the league and were an easy one and done team IF the defense kept performing that way. There's a whole lot of hindsight experts here but the truth is they were horrendous weeks 1-4 and people had good reason to panic

They were the number 1 D last year in the most important metric. They seemed to have found their footing again and seem to be an elite D despite the slow start.

We won't know if the Pats will be one-and-done in the playoffs so let's not start calling people fools for being slightly more negative that you.

It's not hindsight when this is what we see almost every season. The D is usually playing better around this time and beyond every season except for maybe '11 and' 15. Rarely does the team look the same later in the season as it does the first quarter of the season, which BB has stated numerous times is just an extension of TC and the preseason. Saying "if the playoffs started today..." or some variation of that is irrelevant because they don't start after the first four games ever.

"BUT MIKE, THE DEFENSE SUCKS MIKE! THEY HAVEN'T PLAYED ANYBODY! OSWEILLER SUCKS MIKE! THEY SUCK! BUTLER STILL GOT BURNED AND YOU GOT LUCKY WITH A FUMBLED PUNT MIKE! WE WON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE DEFENSE UNTIL THEY PLAY A GOOD TEAM MIKE!"

So you are saying you still have hope.

Well you can flip a coin 10 times and get heads 10 times, it's still a 50/50 shot. What I'm saying is, at some point in time it won't be like that, and we're nearing the end of Brady's career. At some point, a 2-2 start with a historically bad looking defense will not mean that they turn it around week 5 and (possibly) run the table. It's like...we're supposed to just accept that having BB here means nothing can possibly go wrong for our defense. This defense had shades of 2011 and 2010 where we've seen the team be held back by a bad secondary. That wasn't that long ago. Hitting "heads" on the 11th coin flip and flinging **** on people who picked tails because "Why would you pick tails it's been heads the last 10 times" is pretty hindsighted

i for one said no worries, that is was september, and that BB defenses have a history of playing their best ball in dec/jan and feb
