Patriots Win Unsatisfying, But Show Steps in Improvement

Steve Balestrieri

Tom Brady put the team on his back [again], and finished 24 of 40 for 280 yards with four touchdown passes and no interceptions for a passer rating of 114.6

I thought the win was pretty satisfying...

I guess there's no pleasing Steve. He wants more sacks. They get 5 yesterday and he's unimpressed. I think I know why Felger and Mazz is the #1 rated show in the afternoon.

Yeah, the Pats D wasn't super amazing yesterday but they got the job done, granted against a vastly inferior opponent.

I was satifisfied with yesterday's win.

This is not college football in which there can be scores of 77-3 when one of the best teams plays one of the worst.

The Pats offense looked good for a group without Gronk and Hogan. Did they sputter at times, yes, but that's to be expected in any game (I think we are spoiled by teh Jaguars game last year in which they scored on every drive).

As for the defense I still have my concerns going forward but they played pretty well yesterday. Most importantly I was glad to see some aggressiveness from them. Again, I still have my concerns going forward but yesterday's performance was good. I hope they stick with being aggressive.....I'd much prefer that over letting the other team have long drives down the field.

I always feel pretty satisfied with beating an NFL team by two touchdowns (3 until garbage time) on the road, regardless of their perceived strength.

Agreed. Everyone seems to forget the horrible weather that was going on too. The only thing that I didn't like during the game was the end of the 1st half. I couldn't understand why the Pats didn't try to at least get into FG range (although I might have answered my own thought with regard to the weather). They ****ed around out there for about 2 minutes, then tried to make a play with about 10 seconds left. A WTF moment for me that had me quoting one of the dumb headlines on here this week, "Is BB getting too old?" LOL. They made up for it in the 2nd half. And I don't get all the knocks on the D today. I thought they started out strong (they got their 1st 3 and out right off the bat), were a little middling in the middle, and then were pretty strong, except for garbage time, where the 49ers got a garbage time TD. If you take that away, they only scored 10 pts. An inferior opponent, to be sure, but a much better game from the D.

LOL. well, while we are here having "unsatisfying" wins the bengals just lost two of their top three players for the season.

like i said last week, people on this forum need some perspective. blowing out the 49's in ****ty rain conditions without gronk and hogan, and not suffering any major injuries, while the rest of the potential playoff teams lose, should feel pretty satisfying.

I think that "unsatisfying" is a really poor way to describe the game. The offense took three quarters to get really going and the defense was touch-and-go at times but both got the job done and we left with only the Slater injury to be concerned about. Any win is satisfying, IMHO, and there was a lot of good moments we can take away from this game. I think it's good we had another game against a weaker opponent for some of the players in new roles to be able to start ramping up. Next week we get the 3-7 Jets. Hopefully we have just as "unsatisfying" a win next week too!

Another ugly win. Better than ugly loss.

Only my thinnest-skinned Pats-spoiled self could understand "unsatisfying". I was hoping for an elegant, team-destroying football machine of perfection that wouldn't miss a score. Instead it was kind of a boring game, Mitchell's touchdown being the only sizzle.

As television entertainment, it wasn't that good.

On the rain, it seemed the announcers made a big deal about it when SF had the ball. All talk about the ball being heavy, slippery, need to change grip, look at it wobble. They would do replays to show the effect of the rain on them. The rain talk seemed to disappear when the Pats played.

I think the point of the article was that at one point this team was being talked about as potentially the most diverse, yet effective offense in Pats history/NFL history.

Yesterday was a good win, but seemed....clunky

Like I think everybody knows the Pats didn't do a whole lot super great yesterday. They sort of plodded along, made some great plays, and took care of business. But it wasn't the sort of razor sharp execution people have come to expect.

Uh, you and the author DID see the monsoon occurring during the game, right?
