Patriots Will Reportedly Pick Up Gronkowski's Option, Keeping Him in the Fold Through 2019

thats what i took from it as well. He does it for winning, not money. Guy is already set for life. He wants rings!

I took that as the meaning as well. Although the media probably would've figured it out on their own like they do for Brady.

I think he meant he doesn't play well to earn himself a paycut.
Yeah I'm thinking you're right... But homerville will spin it

Dude thinks he's underpaid because he probably is.. But, he's a huge injury risk, so he should thank his lucky stars

He keeps doing what he's doing (being a beast, staying on field all season) he'll likely get a fat extension/bonus before 2018 when his cap number balloons to $11m.

As has been mentioned there is/was some injury risk assumed by the team that makes it a great deal for both sides, at the time of signing it as well as presently. But I also don't think that injury risk would have too much bearing on him making bank in the #1 WR range if he were to theoretically hit the open market right now.

Bingo. Some are already calling him to sit out. He's missed tons of time already due to injury and the Pats stuck their own neck out to pay him very well early.

Can't have it both ways Gronk.

this makes me angry. gronk needs to stfu about his contract. he was and is a injury risk. he wasn't crying about his contract when he signed it. because it gave him security when he was injured.

I agree 100% and I love Gronk. Pats put faith in him when he was just 2 years into the league. They've stuck with tit through knee and arm injuries... They've paid you to sit out a lot of games. So just take your millions and STFU

Yeah, Gronk wasn't complaining about the contract when he signed it, so he should just be quiet and not complain now. Athletes amaze me, they make SO much money yet complain they are underpaid.

he was and is a injury risk
Which NFL players are not injury risks though? He's not more of an injury risk because we were all frustrated watching the team struggle through the 2012 & 2013 playoffs without him.

The big concern with Gronk coming into the league was his back problem/surgery. He played all 32 regular season (plus 4 in playoffs) during his first two years before that deal was signed. Between the previous back issue and the ankle surgery right before he signed I'd say that was the risk the Pats took. But his two major injuries - broken arm w ****ed up surgery & ACL tear - could've happened to anyone and weren't because of any pre-existing condition that the Pats took 'risk' on.

That being said I don't think Gronk needed to comment here, if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all or whatever, and he DID sign the deal knowing this option year was in it, but I also don't see why it makes people angry.

Gronk is absolutely more at risk for injury if for no other reason than helps style of play.. Add in the knee, arm, and back injuries and yeah, he's probably not going to have a real long career.

Everyone knew the deal when the contract was signed. Gronk got the security of a big contract early, and the Pats assumed significant risk before they really had to, with a guy that already had a significant injury history. In exchange for taking on that risk, the Pats got Gronk at a bit of a discount from what he was worth healthy. It was a solid deal where both sides gave something and got something. And both sides have benefited quite a bit. 2013 would've been an even more miserable year for Gronk if he'd been entering free agency.

FWIW, I didn't read that tweet as Gronk complaining about being underpaid. The guy doesn't spend any money on his contract anyway, seems like he was making a joking observation.

Don't see how anyone is mad at Gronk. He's the most dominant player in the league and isn't paid like he is. He's an injury risk but the past 2 years he's been healthy. He's taking more precautions on the field than he has before and it's helping him avoid season-ending injuries. Why is it that fans that sit on their asses all day try and decide what a player is worth?

Agreed. But the negative Nancys will try to make it something I'm sure.

This could not be more wrong

Stop acting like he's making 6 figures. He's well paid. He signed the contract. He's still one of the highest paid TEs in the NFL, and when he signed his deal I believe it was the richest contract for a TE ever.

Breaking news to the Gronks... When you sign long term deals, they're likely to passed in value as other players become FAs.

It's not wrong at all. You are sitting here trying to determine Gronk's worth. Didn't you already try to do that with Forte and had to have Miguel shut you up?

Meanwhile you're *****ing about Gronk when he's not complaining about the contract. He doesn't play for the money. He doesn't even touch the money in his contract. Still doesn't change the fact that he's underpaid.

Again, here comes the homors

You interpret things wrong because you are not objective.

First post so I feel compelled to respond. How about trying to read the tweet again to get some context?

The emojis are thinking faces, a workout emoji and a football. Those don't indicate anger.

"I don't work hard for THOSE REASONS": $$$

The dude says "HAHA" at the end so that means he's "disgruntled", "angry"' and anyone who doesn't think so (based on Gronk's history of NEVER being angry or disgruntled) is a "homer"? Come off it, please.

Well done first post.

What took you so long?

Well said.

Calling people "homers" allows you to flatter yourself that you're some brave truth-teller.
