Patriots Will Reportedly Pick Up Gronkowski's Option, Keeping Him in the Fold Through 2019

No, that's probably not it, even though we all want to think only Patriot players are the ones who aren't about the money, but the greater good of the team.

I'd love for anyone who believes this is Gronk being "angry" to show me an example of anytime prior to this where Gronk has expressed anger towards a coach, fellow player, or front office person that doesn't involve an on-field incident. Good luck in that search.

Or, in an incredibly competitive environment, playing in a league full of guys with massive egos, it was a way to acknowledge that he's not playing for an amount of money equivalent to his ranking as a tight-end (best of all time)...that he knows that, and uses a forum that players have now to say that's not his primary motivator.

That makes him look worse.

I don't think Gronk is a chase the last buck kinda guy but to imply that he took to Twitter to say he is more concerned about winning and performing at a high-level than money and those players to don't think like he does are selfish is nonsensical. By that logic he is positioning himself as being more "true" to the sport than his peers OR casting himself as some kind of a martyr for taking less money to play for a "team". Now he runs the risk or alienating his teammates and peers around the league.

This entire discussion proves my point. Why bring it up? All it does it lead to endless speculation to determine the true motivation of his tweet. He should have just kept his mouth shut. Just like the situation around his injuries. It offers no benefit to anyone- including himself to voice these inner thoughts.

Disagree. To say that you're not all about the money is a good thing.

Usually the ones who are all about the money say it loudest.

The thing is I have zero issue with a professional athlete getting every dollar he is worth- especially NFL players who have careers that can end tomorrow and the league that generates $12B in revenue annually.

If Gronk and I were buddies and he complained to me over a beer that he is the 5th highest paid TE in the game and is kicking himself in the ass for signing that deal in 2012 I would understand completely. I get it. Like I said I don't have an issue with how irked he is with his deal and how its low for what his worth is, its how he went about *****ing about it.

Plenty of things that are platitudinous are still good to say, let alone not worthy of "I hate this crap" scorn.

Its plenty worthy. Squawking about your $4m/yr salary is completely out of touch with your fans and a insult to your owner who is paying you THAT obscene amount of money that you are unhappy about.

OK, we agree then--but that contradicts your post saying it was a a hollow thing to say.

I think, at best, that your reaction is wildly disproportionate to what Gronkowski tweeted.

Gronk complained about his contract.

There isn't any doubt about that.

You can argue it's not a big deal at all and it won't cause any problems... But he acknowledged his contract on Twitter, end of story

Me *****ing about it is worthy- which is what I thought you were implying. An athlete saying its not about the money is hollow to me.

Maybe and my reaction is certainly extreme- I acknowledge that but that does not mean that I am wrong and it is very possible (I think likely) that Gronk has a considerable amount of angst over his pay and regrets signing the 2012 deal. Hes just being very passive expressing it.

Moving on.

How do you know he complained? That's what this debate is about. Look if it does cause problems then I'm sure you'll be there to say it did. But will it? The coach is BB. If anyone nips things in the bud it's him. If there was any problem it would be taken care of.

Ah. No. I was saying that there are things that may be platitudes but are still good to say. Gronk's "I don't do it for the money" is one of those things.

OK. But words matter--that's all we have here on a message board. So "I hate this crap," his ""obscene" salary, etc.--really do miss the mark here.

Moving on.

Sounds good.

I don't think he was celebrating the fact that his option gives him a pay cut... Why else would he mention it?

He wasn't celebrating it, correct. He was pointing it out in a "Gronk-like" way. A way that, up to this point in his career, has not been detrimental to his team's success. So why would one Tweet, no matter how anyone interprets it, change that circumstance?

I never said it was going to be detrimental to the team. I said he should just stfu
