It's not a tough choice. Feel free to continue to blame Thornton for the QBs under-throwing him. Feel free to ignore people who watch the practices and say that Thornton getting open isn't the problem.

Boutte is performing against the bottom end of the CBs. He's not Demario Douglas beating the likes of Jon and Marcus Jones.

If the QBs can't get the job done, you get rid of the guy who is doing his job properly? That makes zero sense. You're punishing the wrong person.
That's what I'm trying to say though. At the end of the day, what's the point of keeping a guy that either can't stay on the field or doesn't fit what you are trying to do? Thornton (based on everything I've read) has been doing most of his work getting open against the backups as well. So, you mean to tell me if over the next 2-3 games Boutte continues to progress and show he can do it against stiffer competition, you're just going to let him go? I've personally got both TT, and Boutte making the 53 with Bourne getting traded. I'd love to see TT carve out a more diverse role on the team. He has a gear that no one else has and at times has shown some filthy footwork.

Dude is still pissed he got drafted by Bill.
Did you see the podcast interview where he was saying New England is the place to be if you're a rookie? Had me laughing because I feel the same as you do and that interview just made me realize that he is just pissed at the world. Guy is annnngry!

Yeah I was just making a joke as he looks exactly like he did on draft night.

I hope that is a good sign he will take it out on OL soon.

I'm disappointed that there are OL concerns this early, IMO that's on BB. Anderson, Reiff and mid round rookies aren't enough to fix the OL problems from last year.
Yeah.. it's just factors that a teams can't control like Anderson being the NFI list, wethere or not Trent Brown is motivated.. at this point.. theybare what they are. Not having owenu available also does not help. He'll likely be on PUP to start the season. So may the best 5 be out there..

I hope it translates to the field as well. Controlled aggression is the biggest weapon for a guy on a football field. Those clubs and swim moves carry just a bit more oomph. I'm interested to see how they utilize him with Barmore. Does he take Ekuale's spot, do they sub out Wise to give him more time on the edge? I guess it'll all come down to how he holds up against the run.

I just posted my 53 and completely forgot about Onwenu rehabbing. How TF did that slip my mind? Good call out, thanks.

I want him at 4-3 DE, where we have nothing behind Judon & Wise (besides Roberts, maybe); I do Not want him taking more snaps inside compared to outside, so I also do Not want to see him any more bulked-up than he already is.

He did not look too upset when he was signing the $7.8M contract.

Yeah.. that's s big loss not having him available. However these guys are NFL athletes. They are in the league, and they should be able to man up and block. Mac gets rid if the ball quickly so that definitely helps! You are welcome!

White and Barmore inside on 3rd down might be nasty. They can collapse the pocket while Uche and Judon clean up the mess. If White and Barmore have a combined 10+ sack season, it is going to be a lot of fun for Uche and Judon. No-one else has shown the ability to pass rush from the inside next to Barmore.

Offensive notes

  • The state of the offensive line will be made public Thursday during the Patriots' preseason opener. In private, it's already cause for concern.

  • Without David Andrews at center, Riley Reiff, fifth-round rookie Atonio Mafi, James Ferentz, Kody Russey and Conor McDermott comprised the top line. Russey is a second-year player who was a college center, Ferentz is expected to be cut in a few weeks, and McDermott remains best suited as a No. 3 or No. 4 tackle.

  • Unable to dam up pressure, Mac Jones would have taken five sacks during 11-on-11 periods compared to at least three for Zappe and another for McSorley.

  • The backup offensive line featured, from left to right: 2022 seventh-rounder Andrew Stueber, 2022 sixth-rounder Chasen Hines, fourth-round rookie Jake Andrews, converted defensive lineman Bill Murray and converted rookie tackle Sidy Sow, a college guard.

  • Neither line could clear space for even a 5-yard run in team drills, despite Rhamondre Stevenson fully participating for a third straight practice. Not great.

  • At quarterback, Jones started 5-of-5 before throwing an interception at Christian Gonzalez to close 7-on-7s. Rookie receiver Demario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte were both in the area. indicating one made a poor coverage read or failed to run his route correctly.

  • If he was at fault, Douglas hardly made a mistake after that, catching three of four passes. He's drilled with the starting offense throughout training camp, but leapt Tyquan Thornton in the pecking order. Thornton repped mostly with the second-team unit.

  • After an early 7-on-7 period, Jones went 3-of-3 with two sacks in full-team drills. He hit Douglas, DeVante Parker and Pierre Strong. That led into a stagnant red-zone period, where he finished 1-of-4 thanks to Hunter Henry losing a touchdown to Jabrill Peppers' punch-out and a busted screen play. Jones' only completion found Henry underneath.

  • In his practice-ending two-minute drill, Jones overcame some surrounding mistakes (two allowed sacks and drops by Stevenson and Kendrick Bourne) to finish on a high note. He launched a 40-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline to Parker, who beat Jack Jones on the catch.

  • Parker caught all three targets during team drills, including another one versus Gonzalez. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Bourne dropped the only pass he saw, another with Gonzalez in tight coverage.

  • Zappe opened with a few bad misses, going 6-of-11 between a 7-on-7 period and full-team drill. He followed with a conservative showing in the red zone, where he didn't take a sack but three of his four completions were far from the goal line.

  • His other red-zone completion was a nifty back-line connection with Boutte that beat rookie corner Isaiah Bolden. Jack Jones broke up Zappe's final attempt intended for Tre Nixon in traffic on an in-breaking route.

  • Zappe's two-minute drill was largely uninspiring: three checkdowns, completions to Gesicki and Boutte, a Gesicki drop, two incompletions to Thornton and Shaun Wade's interception. Backup receiver/special teamer Raleigh Webb was the intended target on Zappe's pick.

  • Tough day to be Trace McSorley, who had two tip-drill interceptions, scored on one of seven red-zone snaps and didn't get to attempt a two-minute drill.

  • No change to the running back rotation: Kevin Harris appears to hold an edge over Strong, who may be tracking for a backup role on passing downs. Harris is much better suited for early-down work and hand-offs close to the goal line.

  • Aside from his one-handed catch, Gesicki beat Bledsoe on an out route and dropped a pass with rookie linebacker Marte Mapu close by.

  • Top targets in team drills: Demario Douglas 4/5, Tyquan Thornton 2/5, Hunter Henry 3/4, Kevin Harris 3/4, Raleigh Webb 3/4, Rhamondre Stevenson 2/4
  • Drops: Stevenson, Bourne

Nice to see INTs by Gonzo & Wade (their firsts of camp?)... And man but does Not a Trace McSore-ly absolutely Suck at QBing or what?

Yes, when the entire starting OL is out, it is a weakness. Name a single team in NFL history for whom that would not be the case after a few days of practice.

Boutte and Douglas will have entirely different roles on the offense than Thornton. They aren't competing against each other.

Agree regarding Double-D; he's carving out his very own position.

Booty & Thornton however might very well be hanging on the same rope and competing for the higher knot on it... Though I would still be very surprised if BoneyT's not on the 53 to begin the season.

Coach cap If Boutte flashed in the game like he is at practice I think he makes the Team.

To me, with the effort from him and the patience from the coaches, White could very well be a 4-down DE from the bye week onwards.

Didn't Wise go inside at times on passing downs? Could've been that we never noticed him there... 2-1//2 sacks in the last 11 games can do that to a guy...

Wise was OK, not bad, but White might be a huge upgrade, and hopefully Barmore is healed. Pushing the pocket always disrupts the passing game.

Looks like he's slimmed-down a bit since the draft process earlier in the year... I might have to adjust my roster on the PatsPicker...
Oh yea, an Island guy (Tonga) and tough as nails. I am rooting for him. I also like James Ferentz because he was so great with the kids (I have not watched him the field yet so this is a very stilted evaluation/binky)

Really great to see that Jack Jones was good with the kids also. Maybe is OK after all....just immature?
