Why? Because Belichick thought that we needed someone.

If he were fine with Russey and Hines (and Murray) competing for the one backup OG, we wouldn't have used a 5th on Mafi.

That being said, Russey or Hines or Murray COULD still beat out, and push him to the PS.

Yeah he's been in the Tub a little too much for our liking. I am sure he sees the other Rookie WR's making plays especially D Douglas.

The Thornton "situation" is largely in the eyes of posters.

Yes, there is a question with regard to whether he will be our #3, #4 or #5 WR. Ok, so? He should be cut because he isn't a top option after one season and part of another pre-season? NOT! Belichick will give him at least another season to develop.

Thornton WILL make the 53. He won't cut for Nixon or Boutte or Webb or Putts.

I think that Belichick would be OK with 4 WR's, but I think now that returner Douglas is likely to make the 53, he'll make room for 5.

IMO, the most vulnerable of the 5 is Bourne, not Thornton.

Agreed until “IMO, the most vulnerable of the 5 is Bourne, not Thornton.” They will carry 5 including Bourne. Bourne has more receiving yards with Mac than anyone on the Patriots. There is a familiarity there. Removing that talent would be a mistake IMO.

He's made a two year commitment wherever he has gone.

Thornton is vulnerable due to missing valuable reps.
Would Bill move on from a player he traded up to draft in a deep WR draft.
Conventional wisdom says no.
But if Boutte lights up preseason and Bourne picks up where he left off 2020 or is reupped in the coming weeks than Thornton is not guaranteed anything l.

I think if Tyquan gets banged up again and Douglas - Boutte and Nixon lights it up I think he's headed for IR. He would have plenty of time to contemplate and still be on our Books.
