Are they looking for a 3rd down back? Or after a couple days did they decide Kevin Harris would be good enough and we don’t need someone as high profile as Zeke? I can’t figure it out.

I believe these tryouts are for a "just in case" scenario, shadow roster. Pats do this every year. It's unusual for there to be higher profile guys available this late in the year though.

I think the personnel people will get together tomorrow on the day off and fill out the roster with the appropriate bodies to have on hand for next week’s game. They probably need a RB and OT since they’re currently one injury away from having to play Harris/Strong or Reiff/McDermott against scrubs in the 4th quarter because there’s nobody else left on the depth chart after Taylor and Stueber/Sow.

End of the roster bodies for the preseason games. That's the joke now - the owners added the extra season game which has made the preseason even less used as roster creation and tune up and even more just signing additional guys who are only here to play so that the guys on the team won't have to be exposed to injury.

Which then likewise means the use of the actual games as "preseason" - terrible football, worse tackling, and self-fulfilling prophecy to the "skill trumps team every time" thought processes. Maybe I'm just in "get off my lawn" stage, but the NFL has slowly kowtowed to the fantasy football methodology that emphasizes just lining up and playing as equaling the same thing as repetition, practice, and fundamentals leading to superior product league-wide on the field (the old parity discussion).

But there are higher-profile, and much Better, RBs available right now; and Bill has More than enough cap space to sign one of them too... Plus he has TWO empty spots open on the 90!

I don't necessarily disagree with you. I think he just knows what he's getting with any of the FA vets. So he's trying to get an extended look at Strong/Harris, get them extra reps. It could also be as simple as the FA's want to wait a little longer before signing, see how things shake out with injuries and what-not.
