PATRIOTS TRAINING CAMP Patriots Training Camp: 7/26

One of the interesting things listening to Pats Unfiltered was the talk about the mixing and matching of the OL. Lazar was critical of the move, saying how almost all of the OL have pro tape and the team knows who they are and what position they can play by this point. That Wallace is the wildcard as a rookie, but otherwise, the line could really use some stability and the chance for them to gel.
How much gelling are they going to do when they aren't actually blocking anybody?

Well, the reporters reported that Judon got two sacks today going against Chuks. It seems like they’re already having blocking problems whether the pads are on or not.

Tape doesn't tell you if Anderson is fully recovered from his illness. And the rookie has no NFL tape.
Agreed. Anderson practiced at RT for one day and sat out the next practice. After that it is in and out like the other OL JAGs. It is early, but definitely didn't impress out of the gate. Sow, Andrews, and Onwenu have been steady, not in and out.

There is never tape on NFL rookies. Maye and Polk are out there all the time. Wallace not so much. Again another bad indication.

To be fair, Judon could do that against at least 8.5 out of 10 tackles playing in the NFL, imo
Agreed. But all the reporters were talking about how bad the line looked. It’s still early in camp and hopefully they can get it together.

As you say, the article is not really helpful. Given the number of new faces, how does he know who is a starter and who is a backup? If they don't mix and match now, how are they going to figure out the best lineup?

How do coaches with 10, 20, and 30 years of experience game plan for the next week's opponent? Watch the tape.

How do coaches determine player weaknesses, tendencies, and habits to decide what offensive and defensive plays to call? Watch the tape.

How can experienced NFL coaches figure out a players strengths and their best position? Watch the tape.

Tape is not reality, it only provides insight into how an individual player performed under a different set of circumstances. There is no tape on how player A interacts with player B, or how a player has improved/declined since the tape was taken.

This can be dismissed entirely, no salt necessary, it means nothing until pads comes on.
So true…these media guys just post sh!t to stay gainfully employed with clicks and likes. Most of them have no clue.

How can anyone from the stands make an actual assessment of the OL based on a no pads practice? Obviously the coaches can assess players because they’re in the middle of it on the field but anyone else is just talking out of their @ss right now.

The team is just playing touch football at this point in camp.

As the lone remaining Zappe-ite... "We're heading for Venus..."
You can only hope to contain him:

Zappe enters the weekend having completed 75% (18-of-24) of his passes through the first three days of camp. By comparison, Maye has completed 73% (33-of-45), Brissett is at 73% (32-of-44) and Milton is at 71% (22-of-31).

^^^THIS^^^

They’ve got to find something to keep everybody stirred up and engaged. It’s how they put bread on their table and in their wallet.

The amount of discussion on here just goes to show it’s the right topic and take for them to ensure they’ll continue to draw their pay.

Nothing more.

I think the main thrust of the argument (one that I found interesting and not necessarily one I completely agree with) is that both the coaching staff and personnel department should have a better handle on who plays best where well before camp. That they’re mixing them all up here suggests that they don’t and that’s a dangerous place to be heading toward the season.

And lastly, they were discussing this, not making hot takes or declaring the season over. They seemed skeptical and hoped the team would have the line assignments squared by joint practices.
I’m sure the staff all had ideas of what they expected before they signed anyone.

They still need to see how they perform on the field. And how they perform on this field this year with this scheme and whoever is next to them. None of that will be exactly what film of previous years will show.

This is the time to try out various alternatives, see who seizes the opportunity now. Film of what they did in the past won’t win games in the future.

He looks like a peewee player with that helmet
Have you seen Tank Dell he looks like an 11 year old no lie. I was like what's a kid doing in Training camp??

They can’t block without pads though. I don’t know how you can expect a linemen stopping an edge rusher coming full speed only being able to slide his feet and stay between the rusher and the QB.
