Patriots Trade For Rams WR Greg Salas

The Pats use plenty of 2 and 3 TE sets. It's called ROTATING the players.. Keeping them Fresh. Mismatches against the defense.. :bricks:

So what happens if maybe, just hear me out... Just maybe... Not all the TEs have the same skillsets and abilities as the amazing Gronk and Hernandez?

There exists a double standard with the New England Patriots organization that I don't really care for. If Gaffney gets injured, Gaffney gets cut. If Shiancoe gets injured, Shiancoe remains on the 53 man roster.

You sound like someone is making decisions with something in mind other than what is best for the football team.
Would you care to elaborate on why you think this motiviation is and edify the rest of us?

if their offense is geared around their biggest strengths; the TEs, then rather than an injury meaning they have to completely retool the offense in the way they have gameplanned and practiced all week doesn't it make sense to simply keep it the same and get as good a backup for each of them as you can?

Torn ligaments in ankle = injured reserve

If Gaffney was cut due an injury so should have Shiancoe.

Unless perhaps say the team that sees both guys every day knows who's injury is worse.

And IR wasn't really a good option when Gaffney was cut because the new rule hadn't come out yet.

That's why there are numerous different play calls from the same sets. How long have you been following football? 2 days? Seriously.

Fells was brought in because he's a good, all-around TE. Not spectacular or anything. But can block and has decent enough hands to catch the ball as well.

Shiancoe is very similar to that.

So, it creates mismatches when you put 2 TEs on the field because it forces the opposing team to try and cover with either a LB, who probably isn't as mobile or a CB who isn't as big. Those mismatches can help open things up for them AND for the other players on the field. Like Welker, Ridley, Lloyd, etc.

If it's at the expense of another skill position that you could argue is in need of more depth (WR hint hint) then no. It doesn't make sense. You could justify three or four. But not more than that.

Absolute BS on your part. You've never played sports, have you? Some of the best athletes in the world who have years of practice and experience get hamstring injuries. It happened in the Olympics. And I guarantee that it wasn't from not being in great shape..

Hammy strains come in two types as far as I know:

1) Stress injuries, that are usually a result of excessive workout. These injuries come very surprisingly, usually without any contact or even a misstep, and they can linger for quite a while.

2) Trauma injuries, which usually occur when you either too rapidly or strongly flex/subtract the muscle while it is still in a relaxed state. These types of injuries usually heal much faster.

So seems this thread has drifted to a WR/TE debate it seems....how about adding Winslow for when Shiancoe is IR'd?

Can someone smarter than me (so anyone feel free to jump in) clarify something about cutting a player?

For some reason I thought that the team can't just cut somebody for being hurt without an injury settlement. Is this simple delusion or does it only apply once the season starts? (because I also think vets contracts become guaranteed for that season once they are on the week 1 roster).

Traumatic stress is the absolute worst though. Especially afterward.

The New England Patriots passing offense needs wide receivers that threaten the football field outside the numbers. The passing offense has bogged down in the recent past (especially in the playoffs against the Jets and Ravens) with too many options that bog down the middle of the football field.

Why go through the trouble of signing the following wide receivers in the recent off-season if that was not an issue:

Lloyd
Stallworth
Gaffney
Gonzalez

So, first you didnt answer the question, unless the answer is you just want to bltch.

Second, in the 2010 playoff game vs the Jets Brady completed well over 60% of his passes and threw for 300 yards, and in the 2 games vs the Jets since, he has torched them. Your idea that one loss indicates a fatal flaw in the team is dubious at best. The Raven playoff loss had nothing to do with that dynamic either.

The Patriots acquired WRs in the offseason, those WRs didn't make the final cut. What exactly is your point?

Once again, you claimed a 'double standard'. Please explain what that means.

We have already traded for a WR, and if you were actually paying attention you would realize that Gaffney is basically on the team as soon as he is ready to play.
Are you telling me that Gonzalez should have been kept so he can be injured?Or Stallworth who is so far done it isn't funny should be kept so you like what names show up on the roster sheet?

Seriously if you want to just whine, admit it and maybe you can be taken seriously.

Well said AJ, those were my thoughts too.

The original comment is odd, lacking logic, and the motivation behind it is potentially approaching absurd.

Obviously it is fair game to speak of BB's roster decisions. Hey, I was left going 'huh' when I saw yesterday's WR list (though knowing the roster was not complete). However, one would think after watching BB this long, one would know BB is almost inhuman, nearly machine like in his bottom line orientation. BB would not hurt the Patriots' bottom line in any tangential way because of something other than a player's value to the organization. Like him/it or not, that is clearly and unambiguously BB's modus operandi.

I'll be satisfied once that ACTUALLY occurs.

Chargers have signed Chris Owusu to PS, but I would like us to snag him. Norv has always had a good eye for pure wideouts, and if they are interested in this guy then so am I.

He was cut by the 49ers yesterday as a victim of their insane WR depth, and all the OTA reports praise him. He is a 6-2 UDFA with impressive combine results (4.36 40-yd, 40" vertical, 19 reps, 6.85 cone) who didnt get drafted becouse of health issues. Suffered two concussions in his senior year.

Stanford product, plays pure wideout and is a return specialist as well.

You bring them in to have competition and see who can make it. Lloyd is the only one who made the cut.

Gaffney, Stallworth and Gonzalez are hardly Charles Johnson, Greg Jennings, and Larry Fitzgerald. They are older WR, with injury histories that were cut from other teams because they were not considered valuable anymore. The Redskins and Colts aren't exactly elite teams either so obviously they don't just toss away good players.

Why is it surprising that these players would not be good enough to make the final 53 of the New England Patriots a team viewed by many as the best in the league?

I think a better persepctive is that judging an unfinished product, especially given the way BB has been known to make changes in the days following the 53 cutdown date, is silly, and getting all bent out of shape over it, a bit childish.
Of course its possible that he misjudged that players who still have something to contribute have enough to help and are needed, but to pass judgment now without knowing what is still to come is reactionary and naive.
