Player Signing Patriots to sign Jamie Collins

It’s kind of sad when we’re discussing old retirement players like Jamie Collins and Marcus Cannon to help save us. Loved those two great talents in their primes, but they have been over the hill for a while now.

Where is our young pro bowl talent?

Yep, very bizarre take by many on the board this offseason. These guys were retreads for a reason. Now Tavai starts. This signing was a result of poor planning by Bill.
Bill should have stuck to coaching and brought in a GM. Ozzie would have been a great choice.

It's spread around the league a little. Bill didn't want any of the HOFers and pro bowlers he dumped to play in the AFCE.

There isn't one player on this team currently that is someone that the team could build around. Barmore was supposed to be that guy, but he hasn't been doing well shaking the double teams. Chris Simms had said the only offseason he was with the front office (2012) he said Bill would rather pass up on a talented player then a guy he "liked".

One pick turns into multiple picks when you trade back... that's exactly how it works.
I like that strategy. The draft is a crap shoot so the more picks the better.
Top players and busts come in all rounds because nobody knows for sure if a player will make the transition from college to the pros. Unfortunately for the GMs, it isn't until they play in the pros that you find out what you have.

So he's old, washed-up and broken-down now... Awesome!

I get it. You'd rather have Tavai continue to get 75% of the reps.

Another choice would be to trade a 3rd to someone for a starter to play opposite Bentley.

Obviously not... Why does it have to be a Tavai or Collins thing? How about signing somebody from another team's PS, or from the street? Somebody who's younger, with gas in the tank, and who isn't coming off recent surgery?

If I'm trading a 3rd, it's gonna be for somebody good enough to replace Bentley

Ok, so you want to kick out bentley and have the new player plus Tavai as your MLB's?

Belichick has spent a lot of resources in past 3 years trying to acquire LB's.

SEVEN ACQUISIITONS
2020: Uche and Jennings
2021: Perkins, McGrone, Judon, McMillan
2022: Wilson
================
This is in addition to bringing in veteran backups who were expected to be major contributors, players like Tavai, Langi and Collins.

With these seven plus Bentley (and STer emergency LB's Tavai and Langi), Belichick thought that he had enough going into 2022. And yes, he knew that we could pick up Collins after he recovered. ELEVEN linebackers should have been enough to choose from.

BOTTOM LINE
11 wasn't enough. Our best option if we think that we are competitors is probably to trade for an IILB.

Let's face it, this team is in a rebuild. It is amazing that the Pats stayed so well for so long with everything geared to giving the worst teams the best opportunity to improve and systematically tear down the best teams. Having the GOAT at QB helped the team make the playoffs in down years, when the rebuild cycle was in process. The cap is crap for a year or two, eventually teams have to pay the piper. The Pats hit that tipping point in 2019 which contributed to the loss of TB12. The team was not elite even with the best QB. TB12 was too old to stay through another rebuild cycle so it was best for both team and QB to part ways.

The injection of free agent talent helped stabilize things and set the table for a full rebuild which takes a number of years. LB was not a focus of the draft because there was a belief that a number of young players already on the roster were ready to step in. Unfortunately that has not been the case. While it is fair to criticize the drafting of certain players, the real issue is that the margin of error was so thin that every draft pick needed to be a home run for the Pats to have an instant turnaround. At least BB does not hesitate to make changes when players do not live up to expectations.

Things look bleak now, the success of this season will be determined on how the team finishes the year. With Mac's injury the slight chance that everything could come together for a playoff push does not seem possible.
