Correct me if I’m wrong, but there are only 4 head coaching vacancies, right? Pats, Jets, Bears, and Jags. Am I missing anyone? The Giants are keeping Daboll.

That’s also really good news, this is a remarkably low number of job openings, so more chances to get the candidate you want. In the recent past, I believe there have been 6-7 openings annually.

There will be more, probably hear about a couple today.

Last week I saw someone say that Stanley Morgan didn't deserve the HOF because he played on so many losing teams.

So I looked it up.

I'm sure because of the Erhardt year it might seem to Patriots fans that the team was bad for a very long time, but it shocked me to see that for the first 12 years of his career with the Patriots (spanning the late 1970s to 1988-1989) Morgan played on only ONE losing team. It wasn't until 1989-1990 that Morgan experienced his 2nd losing season with the Patriots. And when you consider that the Patriots were probably the best team in the NFL in 1976, that's a pretty long span.

1976-1988 the Patriots were good. (13 years)
1994-2021 the Patriots were good (relatively speaking). (28 years)

The Patriots have only had 3 down periods during their time in the NFL:

1971-1975 (4 seasons)
1989-1993 (4)
2022-2024 (3)
That is true. Although they were 2-14 I think in 81 and were middling from 82-84

I'm conflicted here.

If a guy like Ray Agnew is considered a top up and coming GM/personnel guy and he's a package with ben Johnson, that is more appealing to me than Vrabel coming here with an underwhelming GM/personnel guy.

I have more faith in Vrabel as a head coach in New England, and I prefer a defensive-minded coach.

But if we're getting a schlub Gm or if Vrabel is asked to stick with Wolf, I would take Johnson/Agnew a hundred times over that.

Vrabel is way overated. Johnson is the next guy up

I don't know why Kraft fired Mayo if he's only gonna hire a more successful of the same brand of coach. Which is defensive minded hard nosed football.
With you all the way on this one festy

Source or your gut?
Honestly every other team he would be the first choice. Pats are the only weird one because we have an archaic front office that wants something comfortable that Kraft knows. If Johnson and Vrabel both said they would take the job at any of the franchises with vacancies, Johnson would get the nod pretty much everywhere with NE being the only questionable one.

I like this guy a little bit better than I did, knowing that he's not going to interview with Da Jete per @ViperGTS.

I'm leaning in that direction as well.

My biggest apprehension with Johnson is we are going from one rookie HC to another. No one knows how a HC will fair until they are in the role. With that said I think Johnson is smart, innovative, and ready as anyone can be for the job. He's paid his dues unlike Mayo.

Agree completely.

I honestly can't remember an HC candidate as hyped as Ben Johnson is this year. The closest I can think of is Andy Reid when he got let go from Philly. Anybody remember others?

Does he call plays?

Not sure. There are plenty of images of him on the Rams' sidelines with a headset (with the mic in front of his mouth) with a play sheet.

This is like some of the stuff my students turn in, and just like their AI papers, it's as clear as mud.

The only improvement here is that there is no line that says, "Everything here has been written by ChapGPT"

This is why the "retread vs rookie" thing feels like a non issue. They are all more likely to fail than succeed. If it works out, you hit the jackpot. But if it doesn't the stability and experience of a retread vs the excitement and jolt of a rookie coach is pretty negligible.
