Covington is the worst DC we’ve had.
I don't know about that. The Pats were bad for a long time over their long history. I'm sure some of the old timers here can point to worse DC's.

I would rank all openings (confirmed and potential) like this:

Tier 1:
Bears (Positives: Roster Talent, Potential Franchise QB, Cap Space. Negatives: Tough Division)
Patriots (Positives: Potential Franchise QB, Ownership Reputation, Cap Space. Negatives: Roster Talent)

Tier 2:
Jaguars (No Strong Positives or Negatives)
Raiders* (Positives: Tom Brady Effect. Negatives: No QB)

Tier 3:
Cowboys* (Negatives: Ownership Reputation, Cap Space)
Jets (Negatives: Ownership Reputation)
Saints (Negatives: Cap Space)

*potential opening

Correct me if I’m wrong, but there are only 4 head coaching vacancies, right? Pats, Jets, Bears, and Jags. Am I missing anyone? The Giants are keeping Daboll.

That’s also really good news, this is a remarkably low number of job openings, so more chances to get the candidate you want. In the recent past, I believe there have been 6-7 openings annually.
5 - Pats, Jets, Bears, Jags and Saints. There will also be a 6th very soon once the Cowboys once Mike McCarthy's contract expires, unless he gets an extension in the coming days.

I hope this go 'round involves real, serious football interviews, not whatever off-putting weird stuff is reported to have occurred when staffing up Mayo.
Jonathon has a list:

Will you agree to......

1) Call Robert Kraft either Mr. Kraft, Thunder, or Hall of Fame worthy
2) Preapproval by a Kraft, preferably me, of all game plans and personnel moves
3) Agree to have a Kraft Group attorney imbedded in your office
4) Sign lifetime coverage NDA
5) Publicly marvel at the inland light house with tiny bell
6) Never publicly discuss unused cap space
7) Refer to ownership as "hands off" and "incredibly supportive"

But is Wolf strapped on? Or is Johnson handpicking his own GM?
Moot point as Wolf isn't even officially GM. If the new HC wants a GM over Wolf, then there will be a new GM over Wolf. If Wolf doesn't like it, or if the new HC/GM combo really ses no use for Wolf, then he's handed his walking papers too.

Curious how each staff would look like on offense with Ben at HC.

I would assume Ben takes his Lions staff with him. Did not realize our friend Mark Brunell was their QB coach. Him getting promoted to OC under his staff may make our fanbase's heads explode.
Someone has to replace him as Lions OC too, and you have to think they'd look internal for that. If the QB coach is ready for an OC job, decent chance he takes that promotion internally.

Who is Vrable's guy? The guy who thought he could trade away AJ Brown and replace him with Traylon Burks?

No thanks
Vrabel was 100% against trading AJ Brown that’s what started the rift in Tennessee.

The talk are Matt Borgonzi the assistant GM in KC and Ryan Cowden from the Giants who was with him in Tennessee.

Johnson will probably come with Agnew

What they should really do is bring in another VP/GM and pick their brain.
Yes 100%. Pioli, Dimitroff... someone. Hiring a football overlord would be good right now.

I would say the next person inline to be OC in Detroit is their pass game coordinator Tanner Engstrand that we interviewed last year for the OC job

I don't know about that. The Pats were bad for a long time over their long history. I'm sure some of the old timers here can point to worse DC's.
Last week I saw someone say that Stanley Morgan didn't deserve the HOF because he played on so many losing teams.

So I looked it up.

I'm sure because of the Erhardt year it might seem to Patriots fans that the team was bad for a very long time, but it shocked me to see that for the first 12 years of his career with the Patriots (spanning the late 1970s to 1988-1989) Morgan played on only ONE losing team. It wasn't until 1989-1990 that Morgan experienced his 2nd losing season with the Patriots. And when you consider that the Patriots were probably the best team in the NFL in 1976, that's a pretty long span.

1976-1988 the Patriots were good. (13 years)
1994-2021 the Patriots were good (relatively speaking). (28 years)

The Patriots have only had 3 down periods during their time in the NFL:

1971-1975 (4 seasons)
1989-1993 (4)
2022-2024 (3)

Johnson is going to be picky about where he goes, but if you want an Offensive minded coach you have to swing on a young guy; older offensive coaches are either HCs or have shown they aren't cut out for it.

Generally I don't care which side of the ball the HC is from, but the one argument for an offensive one is continuity between the coaching staff and the QB; OCs come and go...either they are good and they get poached, or they aren't and they get fired...no real middle ground. It is hard to keep that position stocked, with an Offensive HC, you can smooth the transactions.

A Defensive HC, better have an OC, QB Coach, TE Coach, and Passing/Running game coordinator in the pipeline.
