PATRIOTS NEWS Patriots pick up Gonzo’s 5th year option

Breaking New England Patriots Team News
Not a surprising development.

I am still in the camp that the Pats don't need to get a long deal done this year. They can wait until after next season. The price increase on his contract won't be that much more.

The Pats have to decide whether they are a zone team like they were in the regular season or a man team like they were in the playoffs. I would consider trading Gonzo if the right offer comes if the Pats choose the former.

An important point: we haven't really heard anything about why they haven't reached a new deal. It's also worth noting that the longer it takes, (A) the more it will cost, but (B) they are working on new media deals which will likely increase the salary cap significantly.

I think it's going to come down to whether he wants top CB money or top defender money. The first they can do, the second they can't. If he wants 40 million a season then trade him after next season for a 1st round pick.

I like Gonzalez. I don’t know where it’s headed w him. But if this team wins, I’d be ok with a franchise tag after this year. If the SB is within reach, NE should do its best to keep players who make plays on key downs in key games. That’s G, as far as I’m concerned.

Picking up the option was as inevitable as the tides. Seriously, is anyone surprised?

Franchise him in 2028 as well if that's an option.

The Pats should wait and see how he does this season. If he lights at early in the season, that's when I'd lock him up.

It really doesn't work that way. If the patriots want him to play a show-me season before wanting to extend him, then he will bet on himself and wait to see what he is worth in free agency.

I have an odd suspicion we will also be picking up Drake Maye's 5th year, provided there isn't a new deal already in place by then.

Dangerous game.
If the world ends tomorrow you are better off.
You’re much better off longer term if the Patriots extend their high-performing players.

Gonzo is extremely talented, but honestly If he's asking for 40 million a year plus, someone else can have him. It wouldn't surprise me if he holds out of OTAs and camp.

If he is asking for $40 million + what might be his value if traded??

Except that he already showed up.
