Patriots OT Sebastian Vollmer's Gruesome Injury Likely Ends His 2013 Season
By: Ian Logue

Sunday saw veteran offensive lineman Sebastian Vollmer see his season likely come to an abrupt end following a gruesome leg injury....

Is there any official note on what's the injury like?

Broken leg is tough but if it's only in one spot, I think it's better than knee injury in a guy that big.

I'm worried with Solder, he's clearly not 100%.

That pos Nantz jinxed us. Shortly before the injury he said our OL was healthy and none have missed time due to injury...

Vollmer: Surgery on broken leg?

The Blitz with Jeff Howe & Karen Guregian | Boston Herald

So sayeth one Herald source.

Gronk's forearm notwithstanding, I'm happier to hear of a broken bone than a major ligament tear.

By the way, Vollmer swam a lot when he was younger, which could be a little plus for him in rehab.

So not done for the year?

Re: Vollmer: Surgery on broken leg?

I was hearing earlier today that he had surgery on a broken bone in his foot and was out for the year.

I'll see what I can find out.

Re: Vollmer: Surgery on broken leg?

It's not 100% confirmed yet that his season is over. At least not until the Patriots officially place him on IR that is. There's still a possibility that they could keep him on the roster if they feel that he could be healed in time for the playoffs a la Ray Lewis with the Ravens last season. Wildcard weekend is 10 weeks away from now.

Depending on how his surgery goes and his estimated recovery time, I'm not completely giving up hope on him just yet, not until he's IR'ed at least.

No point in IRing him until after the surgery, assuming he can be operated on within a couple of days.

Huh? He's already had the surgery done on Monday (yesterday).

So I'm not getting what you're trying to say here.

All these stories seem to be weakly sourced. I'm hedging in case the early reporting is slightly wrong.

Re: Vollmer: Surgery on broken leg?

Given Vollmer's other injuries, I don't expect the team to rush rehab. Vollmer can be at 100% with rehab (or even better than 100% of where he was last week). I don't think that the team will keep him on the roster.

Re: Vollmer: Surgery on broken leg?

Please tell me that he had someone other than Dr Kevorkian do the surgery or whatever

Re: Vollmer: Surgery on broken leg?

I'd be shocked if he doesn't get IRed. Broken legs on offensive linemen are no joke. Those legs have to carry a lot of weight and have a ton of force put on them.

Vollmer pulling out a Gronk next year.... back by week 6.... over/under... submit your votes

A lot of reputable sources and pretty much every media outlet are saying he's already had the surgery done. Not saying it's true or false, but when everyone is reporting basically the same thing, the probability of it being accurate is higher than lower.

Until the Patriots confirm, or place him on IR, we won't know what the team plans to do with him. If they don't IR him within the next couple of weeks (bye week), that likely means they feel he could come back sometime around playoff time in 10 weeks.

All I'm saying is don't give up hope on Vollmer yet until he's officially on injured reserve.

At the beginning of the season there was little room to protect the roster from raids, so any long term injury indicated IR. But after half a season and vacancies created by Wilfork, Mayo etc. perhaps there is room to carry Vollmer on the inactive roster.

I think a typical broken leg is a 6-8 week injury, and that would mean Vollmer could return just before the Playoffs, unless there are complications.

Re: Vollmer: Surgery on broken leg?

I just hope that the brutal Pats doc gave him anesthesia to stop the screaming during the operation.
