It looks like that tweet from Kevin Stone yesterday has been deleted...the one that said Mac had a "ugly day". Below may have been what he was referring to...

- Mac Jones had a good day but it got ugly down the stretch. That and more in our latest edition of the Patriots Journal with everything we saw for two hours…
-This is where Mac’s would-be good day went downhill. Jones had a pass broken up over the middle by Jack Jones, picked off by Kyle Dugger when he jumped a ball outside intended for Stevenson and was picked off again by Adrain Phillips on a ball behind Henry. Christian Gonzalez also had a pass break up on a ball near the sideline while matched up with Parker.

A lot of times BB puts his 2nd best CB on the opposing teams elite WR1 with safety help over the top, and uses his lock down corner to shut out their WR2

I’m sure Gonz will be able to match up against basically anyone, but people can’t ***** and moan if some of these elite veterans get the best of him a couple times, especially in his rookie year
Agreed! Yes BB did do that alot of times.. I Know ty used to match up against Wayne alot. Yeah rookies will learn just like all great CBs did.. the thing is you don't want to become and error repeater and next thing you know the high draft pick is on the sideline watching.

Gilly just manned up and took away teams #1.. but the lock down corner is such an integral part of the defense.. especially against high octane offenses.

I know it's 3 months away... I'm almost certain gonzo is the real deal.. my question would be so who's on AJ brown??...

I don't know if I'd give Gonzo that ass-ignment on his very first day on the job; so maybe...Mills? But that one's a mis-match too...

From all reports he looks like a real CB1. On Unfiltered today they said BB might put him further down during training camp so he has to earn the spot instead of handing it to him even though he's a CB1.

I'd mix it up, sometimes Gonzo, sometimes Jack. Make it a point for them not to get beat deep. Our army of hybrid S/LBs can help with the short and intermediate stuff.

Can also mix it up with Marcus and Jonathan on Smith.

Pretty amped with this CB group

What will probably happen is they'll play a LOT of different coverages.
And what happens early in EVERY season in the secondary - a lot of zone early, less man - especially if there's been turnover in the back half of the defense. Doesn't mean they won't play man, but I certainly don't expect a lot of single high for example until a few games in and they see what they "have".

Dobson is an interesting case. He actually caught on in the New England offense okay but just got injured nonstop and eventually got cut, then never latched on anywhere else and was out of the league quickly. He has always seemed to be pretty positive about his Patriots experience and seems like a nice guy. Perhaps he could be a decent coach? He couldn't stay healthy enough to produce on the field himself but might be able to help teach others.
I might argue that he was expected to do too much as a rookie as well. The 2013 WR group probably doesn't even function on a team without a TB12.

Cap'n here is what I'll say... gonzo by then 3 months from now will be a much better player than he already is.. by being in camp, learning the system, being around vet's and a dam good defensive coach in mayo.. he has the size the physical traits and the attitude it takes to be a lockdown corner.. McCourty is that last guy I can think of that was a day 1 starter as a 1st round pick and excelled and actually was an all pro selection I believe his rookie season. Gonzo can achieve the same feat.. it's all on him! No one outside of gonzo right now I believe can match up with say an AJ brown.

Last season the reason for zone was we didn't have the man coverage guy's.. we had good corners, but not a guy to take away a team's #1.. now we do!

I like that aspect, I'm sure mayo will be doing that.. on 3rd and long I'd expect gonzo to lock down guys.. be it smith, brown or whomever he's matched up against.. as you mentioned we have plenty of guys back deep!

Yeah... BB has great motivation tactics.. I can very well see him doing so.. however if he's going strong and acclimating well to what the offense is doing..then it will be very difficult to deny him CB1 duties..

The guys back deep may not matter with the pass rush from our DL up front.

complementary football.

Undrafted Kenbrell Thompkins being a top WR was just silly.

We have such a deep, talented Safety group. I'd expect Jon Jones and mills to play at safety too. Yes our front 7.. can wreak havoc.

I was pressured to join a league at work one year, and drafted every Patriots player that was available to me out of mock spite. I believe that I drafted Thompkins in the second round, made zero trades, and only altered my lineup when I was forced to by byes. I didn't fare that well, but somehow only came in second to last.
I wasn't pestered about joining the following year.
