Patriots @ Lions

This is the game where the Patriots are really going to miss Aaron Hernandez, as he was the one guy on their roster who really understood what it takes to stop Calvin Johnson and was actually willing to do it.

* The fact the game is televised wouldn't have stopped him either, after all-He Is Aaron Hernandez.

I want to LIKE this post, but...but...but, I just can't.

A bit more from the limited time the media can attend today's practice:

Christopher Price:

- No Amendola at practice again.

- Harrison, B. Jones, Amendola, Gronk, Armstead, Cunningham not present at start of Pats practice.

- Fells, Francis, Aiken, Dennard, Dowling, Cannon & Harrison all on practice field to work with trainer after stretching.

Mike Reiss:

- WR Danny Amendola not present at the start of Tuesday's practice.

- What we know about Danny Amendola: Is hobbled. Injury not head related. Practice absence not cause for major concern for club.

- Would think it's unlikely that Amendola plays Thursday after not being present for Monday and Tuesday practices.

- 'Day to day' Amendola absent again - New England Patriots Blog - espnBoston

A source indicated to ESPNBoston.com that the absence isn't cause for major concern. More specifically, Amendola is dealing with a minor injury issue that is not head-related. The nature of the injury beyond that is unknown.

After missing practice for both of the team's preparation days before their third preseason game against the Lions on Thursday night, the likelihood that Amendola will play in Detroit has decreased.

Amendola played 20 snaps during the Patriots second preseason game last Friday night, catching six passes for 71 yards and a touchdown, and then spoke with reporters afterwards. He has emerged as the team's top receiver after signing a five-year free agent contract this offseason.

If he is unable to play on Thursday night, the Patriots will be likely to rely on a trio of rookie receivers -- Kenbrell Thompkins, Josh Boyce and Aaron Dobson -- as well as veteran Julian Edelman as their top wideouts.

Steve Balestrieri:

- Media availability for practice is over, not spotted this afternoon...Amendola, Harrison, Cunningham, Armstead, Gronk, Brandon Jones

- Dowling, Cannon on lower fields working out with training staff, Harrison as well but not in uniform

Mark Daniels, Boston Herald:

- Danny Amendola is missing from practice for the second straight day.

- Along with Amendola, Gronk, Jermaine Cunningham, Armond Armstead, Brandon Jones and Mark Harrison also missing from #Patriots practice

- Justin Francis, Kamar Aiken, Marcus Cannon, Ras-I Dowling, Dennard, Fells and Harrison are on the lower field working on conditioning

- Justin Francis is a new addition to the "rehab" group at #Patriots practice

Wonderful. And so it begins...

FWIW there is also this, from Jeff Howe:

- Will echo this: No one at Gillette has shown any concern over the reason Amendola has been out of two practices. He'll be fine.

BTW, anyone knows where to catch this game online? Not feeling like paying $14.95 for 1 game on NFL.com preseason ticket....

You can try FIRS*******RTS.com, if can handle navigating thru all the BS pop ups and ads. That's usually where I watch most reg season games. I haven't needed it since last season, so I'll have to deal with setting it up again. It can be frustrating at times, but I'll usually have 2 streams going at a time as a back up. I'll also look around on opposing teams boards to look for links to the games. EDIT: Oops, did I FUBAR? I have a feeling, yes. :bricks:

use firefox or chrome with adblock plus. really improves the experience using that site.

A WR trio of Thompkins, Dobson, and Boyce with Brady for a half vs. the Lions starters will be interesting.

I for one am excited to see this. Amendola's spot is pretty much locked up so its going to be fun to watch the fight for the #2 receiver pretty much come to a close.

Just a reminder:

We don't post links to sites that do not follow copyright laws and are therefore illegally broadcasting games here at PatsFans.com. I realize that there are other sites that do just that, but consider that a downside for this website becoming as large and popular as it is: it's going to be noticed much more here than it would be elsewhere. Similarly you're not going to find, for example, espn allowing people to post those links on their web site.

Now if you can't figure out how to google a few keywords and find what you are looking for, feel free to PM one another with some suggestions...

Thanks much for your support and understanding.

I wonder if Detroit fans are referring to this guy as injury prone and made of glass?

Calvin Johnson misses another Detroit Lions practice, status for Patriots game unknown | MLive.com

Johnson is battling a bruised knee and has been characterized as day to day. He sat out last week's loss against the Cleveland Browns.

"Haven't decided yet at all," coach Jim Schwartz said of Johnson's status. "Today was very similar to a Friday for him (during the regular season). A lot of those decisions we don't make until Saturday night before the game. We still got a lot of time to make a good decision."

Johnson said he injured the knee in practice. He said it has improved, and he still hopes to play against New England.

His return would be a boon to an offense that has sputtered through two games. It has just six first downs on seven series and has yet to score a touchdown.

The offense was even worse last week without Johnson, going three-and-out on its first three drives of a 24-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Johnson doesn't feel pressure to return to help an ailing first-team offense, but does want to get in work before the season opener Sept. 8 against Minnesota.

"We're going to be all right as an offense," Johnson said. "My thing is just getting my wind right. It's going to be a long season. The better conditioned you are, the better you're going to be in that fourth quarter."

The article also says that QB Matthew Stafford is "expected to play at least a half against the Patriots". Backup QB Shaun Hill has missed three of the last four practices so he probably won't play. The only other starter to have missed practice and is unlikely to play is safety Louis Delmas.

Matt Stafford looks to cement his legacy as a first ballot preseason Hall of Famer. That was quite a victory lap he took the last time they beat us in the preseason.

Dobson and Thompkins...all comes down to Thursday...who starts

With Amendola out, the Patriots will probably open up passing plays going three wide with Dobson at flanker, Thompkins at split-end, and Boyce in the slot.

I think he means who wins the week 1 starting job across Amendola comes down to Thursday.

Am I the only one who gets a little pants excited when I see Dowling has been involved in on field activities?
