dare I say... chess vs checkers?
It'll be nice to have the smarter and more prepared coach again. Vrabel won't out-prepare every coach, but he will most, and it'll be a nice change after a year where the coach seemed like he didn't even knew he was supposed to prepare.

But can Vrabel play cards like Mayo? That's preparation baby

The further away we get from the season ending, and looking back at all of it, I really believe Mayo's job was to not be Bill. "It's all good, Jerod, just don't be like Bill." I think he was told they were going to suck, they expected him to be a rookie, learn on the job. This, to me anyway, explains the lack of urgency with him on game day. Oh well, they expected us to suck, and I'm a rookie. He probably got more assurances, verbally, that everything was fine, until it wasn't. I have no idea when the switch was flipped, but being lifeless coming out of the bye week is a bad look.

The only time I saw him "coaching" was the first Bills game. Maybe he wanted that one more than the others, I have no idea. The whole season felt like it was just going thru the motions with Mayo. To your point, that won't be the case at any point during the season in 2025.

You're definitely close. My personal opinion is that he was told "don't be Bill, be the opposite of Bill, you're learning on the job, you'll get a second season, we know it's gonna be a tough year, just do your best."

But Jerod ran into two problems - his first issue was that "trying his best" turned out to be very bad, and while they didn't expect him to become a great and perfect coach in a year, they would have expected to see him improving at his craft as the year went on. Instead there was no sign of improvement and he was actively damaging the brand with his gaffes.

The second issue was that they won unexpectedly against what looked like a conference title contender in Cincinnati in week 1. This made it appear as though Jerod was doing a much better job than he was. In reality, Cincinnati was not as hot as assumed and did not even make the postseason (though they got close with a hot streak to end the year). Additionally, it is probably safe to assume that the stronger early-season performances were thanks to fundamentals still being intact as hold-overs from Bill the year before. But as they progressed into week 3 and beyond, and Mayo's staff was not teaching or enforcing any of this anymore, those core items slipped away and the team regressed into what it truly was, which was a low effort dumpster fire. Mayo got a small spark by playing Maye, but even that sadly faded down the stretch as it seemed like the losing and the poor effort around Maye appeared to lessen his own play quality.

So all-in-all I think Mayo took the job far too lightly because he assumed he was guaranteed a second year, and the early season output made his performance look better than it actually was. This is why Kraft still spoke highly of him in October, but as the season progressed, Kraft disappeared from the spotlight - because he came to realize that Mayo was doing a terrible job. Then it was a matter of figuring out what to do about it, and fortunately for him, Vrabel was ready and available.

I'm going to believe what Bob told us which was he knew Mayo wasn't set up for success and started to have doubts around midseason and were further cemented the last two games. Once he realized there would be a competitive market for Vrabel, he put his foot on the gas.

I think Mayo was 100% focused on winning games. He just didn't know how to do it.

That "coach in waiting" language goes down as the stupidest thing ever.

I agree that Vrabel's availability cast a big shadow on Mayo. I think Kraft wanted Vrabel the moment he was canned in Tennessee but made that dumb contact.

This thread is BRUTAL. Most comments essentially amount to "we're ****ed, back to the basement"
I mean, they're actually interviewing Ryan Grigson in the year of our lord 2025 to be their GM.
On top of just the usual 'being Jets fans', they have a right to be pessimistic.

We lucked out that people still wanted this job, despite the mess the Krafts have made of the place over the last two years. The Jets are hamstrung by the cap, with no coach, no GM, and a 41-year-old QB coming off his worst year.

- Bad cap situation
- No QB
- No GM
- Owner is an idiot
- Grandkids help pick players based on Madden ratings

Yeah sounds like a situation guys will be chomping at the bit to be a part of. I think they're the only team Ben Johnson said "no" to.

I sure hope Vrabel knows the kind of owner he is working for. One who is basically stupid, got real lucky with Belichick. Other than that every move Kraft has made was the wrong one. He can't even get a blow job right. I hope Vrabel got more control of the personal he can't leave his future to Eliot Wolf. He must insert himself into player selection. Kraft needs to put tape on Jonathan's mouth and hold Jonathan's hands because Jonathan is on a I want to be boss trip before his time. The Krafts need to leave the Patriots to the football people and not the failure of Eliot Wolf. Sit down Kraft, you have ruin the reputation of the Patriots that Bill Belichick handed to you, excellence.
Let's Go Vrabel get it done, if you have the power, if you don't have the power you are another Mayo.

were further cemented the last two games
Yep. The Chargers game wasn't just a blowout loss at the hands of a better football team... it was also total coaching and organizational incompetence on display for the whole country. Probably the most embarrassing loss in the history of Gillette Stadium. Kraft had to make the move.

Then 2 weeks later we see those same Chargers get pushed around in the playoffs by the Texans, who are no powerhouse team themselves. It puts in perspective where your team really ranks on the totem pole.

...and there have been some embarrassing ones.

I found this article interesting which illustrates that hiring hot OCs to be your HC doesn't actually automatically pay dividends, and details out how, of the top 5 teams this year based on EPA per play, none of them are the team's playcaller or offensive in nature - they were all either "CEO type" coaches or defensive coaches. Conversely, of the bottom 5 teams based on EPA per play, 3 are the team's playcaller and the other 2 were Antonio Pierce and Jerod Mayo.

I really hope that Wilson gets a 79 in Madden this year so they end up cutting him because his money will be too high.

The pin is in the right location hahaaha
