Patriots have the #1 defense (PPG) in the NFL

The Jets were 1-11 on 3rd down today to make it 10-51 for opponents on 3rd down the past 4 games. This is the key stat. 2 years ago when the won the SB they lead all team in the playoffs in 3rd down percentage. Championship Patriots defenses get off the field on 3rd down.

Kevin Duffy ? @KevinRDuffy

Giving up 15.7 ppg, Patriots are on pace to allow fewest points of any NFL team in three years. SEA (14.4), CAR (15.1) in 2013 were better.

Patriots have allowed 236 points after 15 games. With Arizona hanging 34 onto the Seahawks, Seattle stands at 269 (17.9 per game). Next closest are the Giants at 274 (18.3). Denver and Dallas both have allowed 258 points each, but have yet to play their week 16 games. So in all likelihood, if the Pats keep Miami under 30 points next week they'll finish the season as the #1 scoring D for the first time since 2003.

To be fair though, it's a complete team effort. Patriots D has the best field position in the league, testimony of both the ST units pinning the opponents back and the offense avoiding turnovers that hand the opposition great field position.

Although they have been playing very well in recent weeks. If not for the fumbles on the returns against Baltimore that led to 14 points they'd have locked up the #1 scoring D already.

I've never felt so confident that the Pats are going to the Super Bowl. I think its going to be Green Bay Vs New England.

The NFC seems very hard to predict though. I could see Dallas, Atlanta, GB, or Seattle all going to the Super Bowl.

This Patriots defense is rounding into form when we need em most. Definitely a positive sign to have a hot defense going into the playoffs! I'm feeling very optimistic about this team!

Yeah the term "scoring defense" is fallacious because both special teams and offense also affect how many points the opponent scores.

They said on TV that Houston has the number 1 D. I want to know in what? It's not points allowed.

pitt had the best scoring d in 2011? The one that tebow shredded in the wild card rd lol whatttt

They were #1 in passing defense... aided by playing more than half their schedule against teams ranked in the bottom third in passing.

They had no pass rush and ranked near last in turnovers IIRC. What Tebow did to them was inevitable.

shredded?? He only completed 10 passes for 300 yards but 4 passes went to Demaryious Thomas because the Steelers were putting 8 in the box and daring Tebow to throw. He just happened to connect on some long passes that day, mostly catch and run.......
It was enjoyable to pass...

I wonder where we are ranked in ypg sinve turning things around after Seattle. Weve been pretty dang good all around

I agree. Not only have they been allowing less points, but they seem to be playing much more "loose" and have some swagger!
